.SYNOPSIS...

Periods of rain and fog this evening and overnight, as low pressure
develops on a warm front over Southern New England.  As the low
moves east of Massachusetts, a period of dry weather develops for
much of Wednesday, before the next batch of rain arrives from west
to east late in the day Wednesday into the evening. There is
potential for a minor accumulation ice/wintry mix event Wednesday
night into Thursday, then ending as light snow Thursday night and
Friday. A dry start to the weekend will give way to the chance
for some novelty snow showers to develop Saturday night into
Sunday morning before sunshine redevelops to round out the
weekend. Unsettled weather looks to return sometime early next
week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...

955 PM Update...

* One last round of showers crosses the region overnight with
  mainly dry weather by daybreak other than spotty drizzle & fog

* Shallow cool air presses back southward towards the south
  coast with most locations in the upper 30s/lower 40s

Weak wave of low pressure was located in the vicinity of
extreme southeast MA this evening. One last thrust of warm
advection aloft will send a final main batch of showers across
the region overnight. As this initial wave of low pressure exits
east of the region...the deeper forcing/moisture will depart.
Therefore...mainly dry weather expected by daybreak other than
spotty drizzle and fog.

As for temperatures...as this wave of low pressure moves east of
the region shallow cool northerly flow will continue to press a
bit further south. Temps in the upper 40s and lower 50s at the
south coast may drop into the lower-middle 40s by daybreak.
The rest of the region will see temps mainly in the upper 30s to
the lower 40s with some middle 30s across parts of
northwest/north central MA. However...expect readings to remain
just above freezing so not expecting any icing for the Wed am
commute in our far northwest zones.

Highlights...

* Dry stretch of weather much of Wednesday

* Noticeable temp gradient, near 50 south coast to near 40 NH/MA
  border

* More rain arrives from west to east late Wed into Wed evening

Wednesday...

In between departing system early morning and upstream system for
Wed evening. This will result in enough short wave ridging for dry
weather much of Wednesday. Clouds may even thin at times for some
dim sunshine, but clouds will dominate. Frontal boundary likely
somewhere across CT-RI southeast MA, with temps near 50 along the
south coast, to only near 40 along the MA/NH border. Given the
shallow cool air, derived highs from the hi res guid, which
typically captures shallow cool air better than the global guidance,
including the NBM. Winds light and variable with the frontal
boundary draped across the area.

Wednesday night...

* Freezing drizzle possible late Wed night/toward Thu morning

Next short wave trough arrives from the SW, with a steady rain
overspreading the region after 21z from west to east. Thus, a wet
evening commute, especially for the Hartford/Springfield area. As
cold confluent flow over Quebec shifts southward, frontal wave gets
shunted southward along the baroclinic zone, along the south coast.
This will support cold air to bleed southward, as cold 1030+ mb
builds southeast into New Brunswick. Thus a cold evening rain
transitioning to drizzle overnight, as the dry slot overspreads the
region from west to east. Surface temps and model soundings support
-FZDZ along the NH/MA border, possibly southward into at
least northern Worcester County and Franklin county. Untreated
roads/surfaces maybe slippery toward daybreak Thu, possibly
impacting the Thu AM commute for the RT-2 corridor northward to the
NH border. Min temps in the 30s NW of I-95, AOB freezing along the
MA/NH border, and 40-45 elsewhere.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...

340 PM update...

Highlights

* Rain/Freezing rain continues into the early hours of Thursday,
  with the freezing rain potential mainly restricted north and west
  of Worcester

* Prolonged period of light mixed to wintry precip to round out the
  week, with a transition to snow likely across the interior by late
  Thursday night/early Friday

* Mainly dry start to the weekend before another chance for light,
  wintry, precip late Saturday-Sunday

Thursday and Friday...

Light freezing drizzle will persist through the first half of
Thursday across the high terrain, and while we aren't expecting a
tremendous amount of QPF, frozen precip will result in slick
conditions during the morning commute in regions that receive even a
hundredth of an inch of ice accretion. While there is still a modest
amount of uncertainty in the southern and eastern extend of the
freezing rain/drizzle potential, it is likely that some surfaces
may be coated in a light layer of ice as far east as northern Essex
county in MA, which WILL have impacts on the morning commute.

While soundings are indicative of freezing rain early in the day,
persistent northeast flow, along with an approaching shortwave
aloft, cool the entire column such that snow will be the favored p-
type away from the coastal plain by late Thursday afternoon. The
geographic extend of light snow will continue to grow in coverage as
the column cools further overnight, with flurries and light snow
showers expected for much of the area by 12Z Friday morning. Even
though flurries will be flying, we are not  much by way of
snow accumulation overnight Thursday into Friday, with less than
0.05-0.1" of QPF expected during that period. Even so, these novelty
flakes will remind us that we are still deep in the belly of winter
after a week of above to much above normal temperatures!

Saturday and Sunday...

We will finally see some relief from the dreary conditions on
Saturday as breaks of sun develop. As temperatures rebound towards
normal for the weekend, a weak shortwave moving through late
Saturday into Sunday may provide just enough juice to generate
additional novelty flakes across much of southern New England during
the overnight hours. Again, not anticipating there will be a
tremendous amount of moisture associated with this shortwave, but
some guidance, namely the GFS, hints at the possibility of very
minor snow accumulations across the southern half of our CWA by 12Z
Sunday.

Breaks of sun will again develop for the second half of Sunday as
developing northerly flow drives dry Canadian air into the region.
This dry slot of sorts will be short-lived but will allow residents
to soak up some much needed vitamin D!

Beyond the Weekend...

Relatively dry conditions will last into at least the first half of
Monday, but there are signals for more unsettled weather to
redevelop sometime early next week. While much can't be said about
the timing and type of precipitation this far in advance, the
forecast will bare watching beyond the weekend.

06Z TAF Update...

Today...Moderate Confidence.

Mainly IFR-LIFR conditions early this morning in some leftover
showers along with areas of drizzle & fog. The bulk of this
activity should come to an end by daybreak. This may allow for a
window for temporary improvement at some of our terminals to
MVFR conditions. The best chance for this temporary improvement
will be later this morning into the mid-afternoon hours. Mainly
dry weather prevails from daybreak through the afternoon...but
more rain develop across western MA/CT after 22z or 23z. Light
and variable winds will tend to shift to the NE by late in the
day.

Tonight and Thursday...High Confidence.

Mainly IFR with localized LIFR conditions tonight. This will be
associated with another round of rain that moves across the
region during the evening and overnight hours. We should see the
bulk of the steady rain diminish to areas of spotty light
showers with drizzle and fog. At the same time...shallow cold
air will ooze down from this north. This will allow for spotty
light showers/drizzle to begin to transition to areas of -fzdz
in the Worcester Hills and east slopes of the Berkshires toward
daybreak Thursday. In fact...we may see enough shallow cold air
push south on Thursday to transition ptype to some -fzdz in the
lower elevations of northern MA especially in northeast MA
across the KLWM-KBED locations. There is even a low risk this
threat for -fzdz could flirt with the KBOS terminal sometime on
Thursday. NE winds 5-10 knots but between 10 and 15 knots along
the eastern MA coast.

As warm sector overspreads the waters of RI and southern MA, SSW
winds will increase to 15-25 kt. Northern MA waters will
remain SE-NE 10-20 KT. Periods of rain and fog will limit vsby.

Wednesday...high confidence.

Less wind will frontal boundary draped across the waters. NE-SE
winds northern waters, SSW southern waters, with all waters shifting
to light NE late. Mainly dry weather, but drizzle and fog possible
in the morning limiting vsby.

Wednesday night...high confidence.

Increasing NE winds, with speeds reaching 20-25 kt across the
eastern MA waters late Wed night. Rain in the evening, transitioning
to drizzle overnight, with patchy fog reducing vsby.

Thursday: Low risk for Small Craft Advisory winds with gusts up
to 30 kt. Areas of rough seas. Chance of rain, patchy fog.
