At 1114 AM EDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line
extending from near Lakeville to Fairhaven to near Gosnold to 8 miles
west of Aquinnah, moving northeast at 45 mph.

HAZARD...60 mph wind gusts.

IMPACT...Expect damage to roofs, siding, and trees.

.SYNOPSIS...
Excessive rainfall and flood threat this morning and early
afternoon as showers and thunderstorms move over southern New
England. Another round of thunderstorms is possible by late
afternoon in interior Massachusetts and Connecticut. Drying out
on Wednesday, although unsettled conditions back to the region
Thursday- Sunday. Shower and thunderstorm chances will be
greatest Thursday afternoon and trend more scattered for the
weekend.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
1015 am update...

busy morning at the Weather Bureau. Have had a boundary set up
from around Lawrence MA southward into NE CT. To the east of
there, a solid southeasterly surface flow has been in place,
with lighter southerly winds to the west of that boundary. With
localized low level helicity along that boundary, we've had
several showers (not even thunderstorms) acquire rotation -- so
we are using the term "rotating supershower". One of them had
strong enough rotation to warrant a short lived tornado warning.
Further south, better instability is in place per SPC
mesoanalysis, and as a result we have seen a cluster of
thunderstorms develop over eastern Long Island and trek ENE.
Latest mesoanalysis and hi-res guidance suggests that the
cluster of t-storms will need to be watched closely for
additional tornadic potential the next few hours across SE MA
and the Cape.

The other issue we've been dealing with is areas receiving
repeated heavy downpours. As a result, some areas have seen 1-3" in
the last few hours, especially in a band right along that
boundary -- from Lawrence to Maynard, Framingham and south the
NW corner of RI. Even a few spots over 3" near Billerica. All of
this is resulting in minor flooding.

Modest updates to the hourly PoP and Wx grids based on latest
radar trends and recent HRRR runs. Expecting this round to
basically be off the coast by 1pm. Then we have a lull, with
possibly additional t-storms later this afternoon coming in from
the west.

Will maintain the Flood Watch for the time being.

750 AM Update: Only a few minor changes to POPs based off radar
trends and newer high-res guidance. Storms have developed some
weak rotation, generally north of the Route 9 corridor in Mass.
Our area of current focus is northeast MA for quick moving
storms that may contain weak rotation. Interestingly these
storms have had zero lightning, yet have rotation. Something to
keep in mind this morning, that a strong shower can produce weak
rotation. Forecast does remain on track, see previous forecast
below.

* Thunderstorms will be accompanied by a low risk for damaging wind
  gusts or an isolated tornado/water spout.

* Additional storms possible late this afternoon/evening

Heavy Rainfall Threat

A flood watch has been put into effect for most of RI and eastern MA
as thunderstorms with torrential rainfall are forecast to develop
over southern New England this morning. Environmental parameters are
optimal for excessive rainfall as robust short-wave energy by August
standards traverses over the region this morning and afternoon.
PWATs in excess of 2 inches are sitting over the region at this time
with a deep warm cloud layer greater than 12000 feet supporting
efficient rainfall processes. Additionally, model forecasts for
height falls indicate that the strongest forcing for synoptic
ascent will come very close to coinciding with peak
heating/diurnal instability. CAPE values greater than 1000 J/kg
are forecast to develop over east and northeastern MA where both
the highest PWATs and synoptic forcing are forecast to reside.
As if the combination of these parameters was not enough, we're
also looking at an environment favorable for
backbuilding/training thunderstorms per NAM3K bufkit soundings.
So how much precip can we expect? 00Z HREF probability matched
mean 24 hour precip ranges from 2 to 3 inches across much of
eastern MA. Local probability matched means suggest the
potential for locally higher amounts nearly double those values.

Severe Weather Threat

While flooding is the main hazard of concern for today, we can't
forget that this system will be accompanied by fairly robust low-
level shear and helicity. 20 to 25 knots of 1km shear and 0-1km SRH
from 100 to 150 m2/s2 will be present as these storms move over the
region. This introduces a low risk for a tornado in southern New
England today (2 percent per SPC CWO). The limiting factor today for
severe thunderstorm potential (including tornadoes) will be the deep-
layer shear profile (unfavorable hodograph) and mid-level lapse
rates. Nonetheless, STP values from the HREF are in the 0.5 to 1
range across eastern MA, so we'll be watching KBOX radar closely for
any signs of rotation.

Timeline

KBOX radar is currently detecting mostly light showers west of I-495
at 330 am. Expect some showers to intensify into thunderstorms after
sunrise as day time heating ensues. Heaviest rainfall is generally
expected to be between 5 am and noon. Areas west of I-495 are
expected to experience the heavy rainfall between roughly 5am and
9am while areas east of I-495 including Boston would be in the 8am
to noon window. Areas across southeastern MA may see some clearing
by early afternoon while areas further norther may experience
another round of cold frontal showers and thunderstorms later this
afternoon and evening. There is a fair bit of uncertainty with
respect to this second batch of precip as the potential will rely
heavily on how the expected heavy rainfall this morning unfolds.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM WEDNESDAY/...
Tonight and Tomorrow

Any remaining showers/storms from this evening should diminish after
sunset when the cold frontal boundary is expected to be pushing
east of the region. This will be followed by gradual clearing
and lower dewpoints settling over the region for Wednesday.
While Wednesday looks to be sunny and dry with highs in the 80s,
deep mixing and steep low-level lapse rates will support gusty
northwest winds in the wake of the exiting cold front. 30 mph
gusts will be possible during the early afternoon hours when
diurnal mixing will be at its peak.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
Highlights

* Wednesday will be the pick of the week with the highest confidence
  the area will see dry conditions

* Unsettled end to the workweek and into the weekend

Wednesday will bring a brief reprieve from the continuous unsettled
pattern we have been entrenched in for the last several weeks as
weak ridging and surface high pressure settles over the region. With
that said, we are not immune to some scattered morning showers, as
outlined by the CAMs as the leeward side of the trough axis/low
pressure pushes east into the Gulf of Maine. A much drier column of
air moves in behind the departing shortwave, leading to clearing
skies. The biggest headline for Wednesday will be gusty winds, with
a 925mb LLJ of 25 to 35 kt persists over the region. Winds should
peak during the morning hours when the jet is strongest, subsiding
slightly through the day as westerly flow develops.

Unsettled weather returns Thursday through the end of the period.
While flow will be primarily zonal, several low pressure systems or
shortwave features will swing near to or through southern New
England over the coming days. The most robust, and therefore highest
confidence precipitation event on the horizon comes Thursday
afternoon and evening as a rather strong Summer low, of 998mb, moves
across southern Canada. The shortwave energy defined by the low's
passage appears to be greatest as a cold front swings through;
though, this front will bring little relief from muggy dewpoints in
the 60s. While this frontal passage/shortwave displays healthy
severe weather characteristics, including PWATs surging towards 2"
and Bulk shear values approaching 60kt, both instability (~200-400
J/KG) and mid level lapse rates (~5.5C/km) are dismal, leading to
the conclusion that a widespread thunderstorm activity is unlikely;
though heavy downpours are possible. The one exception to
thunderstorm coverage and intensity may be across SE MA and the
south Coast, where a strong LLJ develops between 18 Thursday-00Z
Friday, MLLR approach 7C/km, and instability manages to muster up
about ~1000-1400 J/kg MUCAPE. Timing will again be critical as
instability will fall off quickly after sunset.

Friday appears to be a mainly dry day for southern New England as we
fall into a lull between shortwave features and very weak mid level
ridging develops.

Continued parade of weak shortwaves continues into the weekend,
though shower activity appears to be more scattered in nature
Saturday and Sunday. Dewpoints finally drop by Saturday morning,
leading to some early fall like temperatures, 50s across the
interior, to start the day. Summer lovers will be glad to hear that
even with the cool start to the day, temperature rebound into the
80s all weekend.

.AVIATION /14Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Forecast Confidence Levels:

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

12Z Update...No major changes to the forecast, opt to con't a
TEMPO for TSRA at BOS and PVD 14/15 to 18/19 Zulu. Thunder
remains to our south over eastern Long Island, do believe with
day time heating areas of thunder will advect northward into RI
and eastern MA air space. Otherwise forecast remains on track.
See previous discussion below.

Today...Moderate Confidence

MVFR/IFR ceilings for this morning through early afternoon as
showers and thunderstorms overspread southern New England. Some
improvements to VFR will be possible after 15Z for the western
terminals and after 18Z for the eastern terminals. Another round
of showers and thunderstorms will be possible this afternoon and
evening, but confidence is low. If showers/storms redevelop
later today they should be more isolated to scattered as opposed
to the more widespread activity we're expecting for the first
half of the day.

Tonight...High confidence

Any evening showers/storms should taper off after 00Z. VFR
thereafter with 10 to 20 knot west/northwest winds.

Tomorrow... High confidence

VFR. 15 knot northwest winds with gusts from 25 to 30 knots
possible.

KBOS TAF...Moderate Confidence

Highest confidence for TSRA at BOS is between 12 and 16Z, but it
is possible an isolated shower or storm could develop and move
over the terminal between 09 and 12Z. Low confidence in this
outcome hence the VCSH for this time frame. Should see
improvements after 18Z with VFR conditions likely returning.
There is a low chance for another round of isolated to scattered
showers and thunderstorms by mid-afternoon/evening but
confidence was too low to mention in 06Z TAF.

KBDL TAF...Moderate confidence in TAF.

Highest confidence for TSRA at BDL is between 09 and 12Z. There
is shower activity near BDL at this hour and there is a low
chance that thunderstorm activity could develop prior to 09Z.
Should see substantial improvements by early afternoon. Another
round of isolated showers and storms may be possible by mid-
afternoon/evening, but confidence is low at this time as the
outcome will rely heavily on how things unfold this morning.

Outlook /Wednesday Night through Saturday/...

Wednesday Night: VFR. Breezy.

Thursday through Thursday Night: Mainly VFR, with local MVFR
possible. Breezy. Chance SHRA, isolated TSRA.

Gusty southeast winds ahead of a warm front become southwest as
the warm front lifts north and east. Gusts up to 30 knots
possible over the outer waters. SCY remains in effect. Showers
and thunderstorms expected over the coastal waters this morning
with waterspouts possible!

A rip current statement is in effect for Tue. While it will be
far from an ideal beach day, this statement was issued to
address the potential for rip currents on southern and
southeast-facing beaches.

Tonight and Tomorrow

Unsettled weathers diminishes overnight as a cold front exits
east of the coastal waters. Gusty west/northwest winds develop
behind the front. 15 to 20 knot sustained winds tonight and
tomorrow with gusts up to 30 knots possible. Seas from 5 to 7
feet over the outer waters.

...Developing thunderstorms will impact portions of Essex, Norfolk,
Suffolk, eastern Middlesex and northwestern Plymouth Counties
through 1045 AM EDT...

At 1000 AM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking developing thunderstorms
along a line extending from near Carlisle to Norfolk. Movement was
northeast at 40 mph.

HAZARD...Winds in excess of 40 mph. Broad rotation has been seen on
         radar and could result in funnel clouds.

SOURCE...Radar indicated.

IMPACT...Strong winds could cause minor damage such as downed
         branches.

Boston, Lowell, Cambridge, Brockton, Quincy, Lynn, Newton, Lawrence,
Somerville, Framingham, Haverhill, Waltham, Malden, Brookline,
