.SYNOPSIS...
The powerful late season winter storm that brought historic
heavy wet snow/power outages to portions of the northern
Worcester Hills and the east slopes of the Berks will loosen its
grip on our region today. Warming trend rounds out the work
week with dry conditions expected Thursday and the first half
of Friday. A few shower chances develop late Friday and
Saturday. Much colder conditions are ushered in behind departing
cold front Sunday. Next work week will start off seasonable and
dry.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
930 AM update...
Large ocean storm over the ocean east of New Eng will continue
to drift eastward today. However, SNE remains within the closed
cyclonic circulation which will result in lots of cloud cover
today, although some breaks of sunshine as well. An isolated
rain/snow shower is possible, otherwise a dry day for much of
the region. Strong pressure gradient with steep low level lapse
rates supports windy conditions with 30-45 mph gusts at times,
strongest over higher elevations. Below normal temps with highs
ranging from upper 30s in the high terrain, to low/mid 40s
elsewhere. It will feel a bit chillier though given the gusty
winds.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/...
Highlights...
* Gusty winds slowly diminish tonight: Lows upper 20s/lower 30s
* Dry & milder Thu with highs middle 40s to the lower 50s
Details...
Tonight...
The pressure gradient will continue to weaken as the coastal
storm continues to move further east and away from the region.
Gusty winds early this evening should gradually diminish
overnight...but winds will not totally decouple. This will keep
low temps generally in the upper 20s to the lower 30s.
Thursday...
Weak ridge of high pressure builds to our south on Thursday.
This should allow a westerly flow of milder air to work into the
region. High temps should reach the lower to middle 40s across
the high terrain...to the upper 40s and lower 50s elsewhere. We
should see some partial sunshine at least early in the day...but
model cross sections do indicate mid-level cloudiness will be
spilling into the region from the north and west. Much less wind
than today with gusts on the order of 15 to 20 mph.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Highlights
* Warming trend to round out the work week with mainly dry
conditions Friday
* Chance for rain on Saturday associated with a passing cold front
and weak low pressure emerging of the coast
* Much colder Sunday with the chance for spotty flurries across the
high terrain.
Friday and Saturday...
Warming trend develops to round out the work week as ridging builds
in ahead of our next precipitation maker. Brief period of clear
skies likely early Thursday as high pressure builds over southern
New England, but this will be short lived as high clouds build well
in advance of the next system. Northwesterly surface and mid level
flow will transition to SW as the ridge axis pushes west of our
region early Friday, yielding a prolonged period of WAA from
the southwest. This will allow temperatures to build a few
degrees each day, achieving readings in the 40s and low 50s
Thursday, with readings in the mid 50s possible on Friday; the
warmest temperatures are expected across the CT River valley and
SE MA.
Low pressure moves to our northwest late Friday and early Saturday.
Showers are likely to develop Friday afternoon and evening as warm
front lifts north across southern New England but will be scattered
in nature. Cold front approaches from the west Saturday morning as
an area of low pressure simultaneously slides northeast from
the mid Atlantic/Carolinas bringing another chance for shower
activity to the region. Rain chances appear to be greatest
across the south coast as strengthening, albeit weak, low
pressure flirts with the coastline though there is uncertainty
regarding the shower potential from the aforementioned low, as
some guidance (namely the ECMWF) shunts the low well to our
south. Hires guidance is just coming into view with this
forecast update, but the NAM12km is in agreement that the most
appreciable precipitation this weekend will fall across the
south coast. Overall, the combination on the weak low and cold
front looks to bring less than a 0.25" of QPF to SNE as the
frontal passage will bring all shower activity to an end by
Saturday evening as it ushers in drier conditions on NW flow.
Sunday into early next week...
Much colder conditions develop the second half of the weekend as
strong cold air advection streams in behind the departing cold front
overnight Saturday. Temperatures will struggle to reach the freezing
mark across the high terrain with widespread 30s expected region
wide. Cold pool aloft with 925mb temperatures falling to -10C and
850mb temps falling to -15, will likely see some cold pool clouds
and snow showers develop with daytime heating by Sunday afternoon.
These light snow showers look to be restricted to the high terrain,
with much of the region remaining dry for the better part of the
day.
Another warming trend develops as high pressure settles in overhead
to start next workweek. Temperatures will return to near or above
average Monday and Tuesday.

lingering showers across the high terrain and Cape Cod will
persist until 10AM-12PM. VFR across the interior as cloud bases
lift from 3000-5000ft this morning to ~10k ft this afternoon.
Lingering MVFR conditions across the Cape and Islands to
improve to mainly VFR levels by mid morning...despite a broken
deck of strato-cu for much of the day. Still can not rule out a
brief periods of marginal MVFR cigs in spot rain/snow showers
into the afternoon. NW wind gusts of 25 to 35 knots but a few
gusts up to 40 knots are possible across the interior and
particularly the high terrain.
Tonight...High Confidence.
VFR. NW wind gusts of 25 to 35 knots early in the evening will
diminish to between 10 and 20 knots by daybreak.
