.SYNOPSIS...
A powerful late season winter storm will bring 1 to 2+ feet of
heavy wet snow to the high terrain of the northern Worcester
Hills and Berkshires...while the lower elevations see rain
changes to wet snow with strong winds making for difficult
travel by later today and into this evening. Low pressure
pulls out to sea Wednesday. Warming trend to end the
week with seasonable mild highs in the upper 40s and low 50s.
Next chance for light precipitation comes Friday and Saturday.
Clear but cooler conditions expected to wrap out the weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
10 AM update...

Extreme impacts being felt across the Berkshires with
widespread power outages and travel disruptions. Locally up to
2 feet of snow has already been reported. Power outages not as
widespread in northern Worcester county where around a foot of
snow has fallen as of 8 am. However, heaviest of the snow will
continue into the afternoon in this area along the northern
periphery of the mid level low with low level jet providing
strong moisture advection and forcing for ascent. An additional
8-12 inches is expected across the Berkshires and northern
Worcester hills. Max snowfall of 20-30 inches in the Berkshires
with locally up to 3 feet not out of the question. In the
northern Worcester Hills 1-2 feet is expected with worsening
conditions through the day.

Very challenging forecast to the south and lower elevations
through the afternoon. Rain-snow line roughly from NW Essex
County into central MA and far NE CT. Low level circulation near
the CT coast will initially slow the SE progression of the rain
snow line and will await the offshore storm becoming dominant
feature. As this occurs and max pres falls shift to the east the
rain snow line will collapse SE and reach the coastal plain
early afternoon and the south coast by late afternoon.
Complicating factors include a dry slot which is lifting north
into CT and RI and will bring a temporary lull in the precip
south of the Pike, but this is expected to fill in within the
comma head of intense low pinwheeling toward the coast. The
other factor is the surface temps. Hi-res guidance keeps temps
33-34 after the flip to snow and this will be the case with the
lighter precip, but temps should fall to near 32 with heavy
precip rates. The focus for heaviest precip this afternoon will
be across northern/NE MA aided by impressive low level jet that
sets up in the Gulf of Maine. The biggest uncertainty in snow
accum this afternoon is across NE MA due to marginal surface
temps but think there will be a period of heavy snow here
mid/late afternoon. Further S across RI and SE MA not expecting
much accumulation until late afternoon and this evening.

Regarding wind threat, the timing of strongest winds will be
late afternoon and evening, especially NE MA assocd with the
strong NE low level jet.

  especially eastern Essex County/Cape Ann later today

Details...

A rapidly intensifying coastal storm will bring a very
serious/major winter storm with power outages to the high
terrain...while rain changes to wet snow in the lower
elevations. While amounts are much more uncertain in the lower
elevations...downed tree limbs and power outages are also
possible.

1) Snow Amounts & Impacts:

East Slopes of the Berks and northern Worcester Hills...

A very high impact/serious winter storm is in progress for the high
terrain of the  northern Worcester Hills and Berks at and above 1000
feet. Powerful intensifying coastal low pressure is resulting in an
easterly firehose of moisture off the Atlantic which is combined
with upslope flow and adequate thermal profiles to produce very
heavy wet snow. This will be a very serious storm for this region
with 1 to 2+ feet of heavy wet snow resulting in downed tree limbs
and power outages. In fact...a few spots in the highest terrain may
see total snow amounts may approach 30 inches! The snow may become a
bit drier by late afternoon and into the evening before finally
winding down overnight. But a very serious storm is in progress for
this region and will continue into the evening.

Lower Elevations Including the Coastal Plain:

Ptype has mainly been a cold heavy rain through early this morning
given warmer boundary layer...but Ptype was in the process of
flipping to wet snow across parts of southwest MA and into portions
of northern CT. This likely a result of the intense vertical motion
and heavy QPF despite marginal thermal profiles. As the main coastal
low rapidly intensifies and lifts northward of the eastern MA
coast...thermal profiles will cool further and Ptype should flip to
wet snow in most locations through mid to late afternoon. In fact
some of the high resolution guidance intensifies it to nearly a 975
mb low east of the MA coastline. Temps will likely remain above
freezing outside the most intense snowfall. However...this system is
so strong with intense jet dynamics and a classic intensifying 700
mb closed low along with backbent mid level warm front. This may
result in an area of heavy wet snow...but there is uncertainty where
this may occur. Thinking is that areas of northeast MA may stand the
best chance of getting impacted with this for at least a few hours.
This could make for a few hours of very difficult travel this
afternoon especially with the strong winds expected to develop. But
this will also be competing with a mid level dryslot which makes
things quite tricky.

While uncertainty is higher than what we would like to see...opted
to upgrade to a Winter Storm Warning for the rest of northeast MA
for 3 to 8 inches of wet snow especially because it will be combined
with a period of 45 to 65 mph wind gusts this afternoon. Things may
get quite messy across this region during the afternoon given the
wind and wet snow and travel may become quite difficult with power
outages.

We also upgraded portions of the lower elevations of southwest MA
for 4 to 8 inches of wet snow including the Springfield metro areas.
Meanwhile...thinking area in the 500 to 800 foot range end up
with snowfall amounts on the order of 6 to 12+ inches of snow
with power outage potential.

Snow will continue this evening before winding down overnight. Even
portions of the Cape/South coast may see a few inches of wet snow
before everything winds down.

2) High Wind Potential:

A powerful NNE low level jet will develop on the left side of a very
strong 975 mb low pressure system off the MA coast. This will result
in strong wind gusts developing...which should peak this afternoon.
High Wind Warnings continue for the eastern MA coast...for a
period of 45 to 65 mph wind gusts. The strongest of the wind
gusts will be across eastern Essex county/Cape Ann given their
exposure to a 70-75 850 MB NNE low level jet this afternoon and
evening. Conditions may become quite difficult for travel
especially with the wet snow and potential power outages.
Further inland...wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph will still cause
issues with pasty wet snow and lead to power outages.

Highlights:

Wednesday...

Intense occluded cyclone east of Cape Cod will slowly advect
farther offshore during Wed. This departing ~985 mb low,
combined with 1025 mb high over the OH valley advecting east,
will result in tight a pressure gradient and support NW winds
gusting up to 25-35 mph, except up to 40 mph across the hilly
terrain of CT and MA. This may impact power restoration from any
outages Tue/Tue night. This combined with highs only in the
upper 30s to lower 40s, will yield a blustery and chilly day.
Cold cyclonic flow aloft will yield mostly cloudy conditions,
along with scattered rain/snow showers, more numerous in the
upslope regions of the Berkshires and Worcester Hills.

Thursday/Friday...

Chilly and blustery start Thu morning, but as ridge axis advects
across the area, winds diminish Thu afternoon. Morning sunshine
may give way to increasing afternoon clouds, as moisture spills
over the ridge. Milder, with highs 45-50, except low 40s across
the Worcester Hills and Berkshires where snowpack exist. Normal
highs are in the low to mid 40s, so slightly above normal. It
will feel pleasant given decreasing winds. Friday starts dry,
but latest model trends have next upstream trough advecting
eastward faster than previous guidance. Therefore, risk of
showers in the afternoon and especially late in the day and at
night, as a warm front approaches. Mild, especially across CT/RI
and southeast MA, where warm sector airmass may yield highs in
the low 50s, except mid to upper 40s across Worcester Hills and
Berkshires given snowpack. Light winds in the morning, becoming
south in the afternoon. Once possible issue, with snow melting
during the day, then subfreezing temps at night, especially
outside the urban areas, could be some icy spots each night and
early morning.

Weekend...

Short wave and associated cold front move through Saturday
morning with scattered showers, then should experience a
drying trend Sat afternoon as dry slot moves across the area.
Remaining mild, as cold air lags well to the west over the Great
Lakes, where upper low is located. Highs should manage to climb
into the low and mid 50s, except upper 40s across the Worcester
Hills and Berkshires where snow cover will still exist.
Trailing short wave delivers CAA later Sunday into Monday.
Diurnal clouds Sunday likely give way to more sunshine Monday.

Strong noreaster impacts southern New England today. All terminals
IFR to LIFR today. Strong N/NE winds up to 50kt along the eastern MA
coast, including BOS and ACK. Winds lower across interior southern
New England but still 20-30kt. Rain gives way to snow at all
terminals through the day, snow will be heavy at times. Vsbys
reduced to 1/4 to 1/2mi at times.

Tonight...

Conditions improve somewhat, with N/NE winds diminishing to between
20-30 kt area wide, with the highest winds expected across eastern
Massachusetts. Light to moderate snow to continue through at
least midnight before becoming more spotty in nature after
midnight. Vsby improves rapidly as snow comes to an end between
03Z-09Z west to east. LIFR improves to IFR and MVFR before
sunrise. Pockets of VFR possible near 12Z across western
terminals.

Wednesday...

Lingering snow snow showers come to an end by 15Z. VFR develops at
all terminals, last across the Cape where MVFR hangs on until 16Z.
NW winds 20-30kt, gusting up to 40 kt across the high terrain.

KBOS Terminal...High confidence in TAF. IFR to LIFR today. Rain
transitions to snow between 15-18Z. Snow heavy at times,
accumulating 3-6 inches. Strong E/NE winds, with gusts to 50 kt
possible today. Diminishing slightly this evening to near 30kt.

KBDL Terminal...High confidence in TAF. Snow, heavy at times for
much of the day. Accumulations of 3-7". Strong N/NE flow up to 30
kt. IFR to LIFR all day.

A sub-980 mb cyclone moving up the Atlantic seaboard to coastal
Southern New England will yield hazardous to potentially dangerous
conditions for mariners for today and tonight.

Period of strongest gusts is anticipated this afternoon into
this evening, with gusts 50 to 60 kt on the eastern waters.
bays and harbors. Seas on the outer offshore waters will become
rough, with the potential for 20 to 25 ft waves into the eastern
and northeast offshore waters. Gale to strong gale force gusts
are expected on the southern waters, and it is not out of the
question gusts could get near storm force on the waters east of
Montauk.

Mariners are encouraged to seek safe harbor given these expected
conditions. Besides that, rain will reduce visibility as well.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
A coastal flood advisory continues for the early Wednesday
morning high tide. Core of the strongest NNE winds will occur
this afternoon and early evening along the coast. This will
result in a 2 to 3 foot storm surge during the early evening
high tide...the astronomical tide is very low and only 8.3 feet
MLLW in Boston. While some minor splashover may occur...the
next astro tide is 9.7 feet MLLW early Wed morning. This high
tide will be met with a 2 to 3 foot storm surge which may result
in pockets of minor coastal flooding. We have continued the
Coastal Flood Advisory for the early Wed am high tide and
expanded it to Nantucket. However...we are only expecting minor
coastal flooding.

The most vulnerable places include Gloucester, Revere, Hull, and
Scituate and perhaps the Bay side of Cape Cod (Sandwich to
Dennis) as well as Nantucket. In addition, the large waves
offshore will likely result in minor beach erosion Tuesday and
Wednesday. If water levels were higher, more significant erosion
would be possible, but that's not expected.
