.SYNOPSIS...

Dry and seasonably cold weather prevails for much of today. A
strong coastal storm impacts the region tonight through Monday,
with heavy rain, gusty winds, coastal flooding and accumulating
snow for northern Massachusetts, heaviest snow over the high
terrain of the Berkshires and northern Worcester Hills. Drier
Tuesday, but the active pattern continues as another system
moves in for late Wednesday into Thursday, with more
accumulating snow and mixed precipitation changing to rain.
Mainly dry and seasonably cold conditions follow for Friday into
next Saturday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

1PM am update...

Satellite shows widespread low clouds socked in beneath the
inversion with little chance of seeing the sun today. We are
monitoring the latest updates on the upcoming winter storm and
will have an update on expected snowfall later this afternoon.

Highlights...

* Pesky stratus lingers, but should remain dry until later this
  afternoon. Temps near to slightly warmer than seasonable.

Ridge axis over the eastern Great Lakes this morning flattens out
and moves offshore this afternoon. As the ridge flattens out will
see a shortwave ejecting from the trough digging into the Lower
Mississippi River Valley. High pressure builds further offshore as
the day progresses.

Dry and quiet weather expected across much of southern New England
today. Guidance still struggling with the pesky low level stratus in
place over our region. Have leaned heavily on the RAP 925 hPa RH
field as it is doing quite well compared to observations. Given the
subsidence inversion in place should be quite difficult to scatter
these clouds out. On top of this will have increasing mid/high
clouds ahead of the incoming system, so should stay cloudy for much
of the day. Think that the only shot for some breaks comes late
AM/early afternoon as southerly winds pick up. Will see 925 hPa
temps increase to +/- 3 degrees Celsius. The result will be highs
essentially around or slightly above normal readings for this time
of year.

Will note that do think there is potential for some spotty drizzle
as SE/E winds pick up during the afternoon. Don't think we see
rain/snow spread into our area until late this afternoon/early
evening per HREF guidance. May need to add the drizzle mention for
future updates.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM MONDAY/...
Highlights

* Strong coastal storm impacts southern New England. Heavy wet snow
  especially across NW MA into Worcester county may result in power
  outages. Accumulating snow will bring impacts to the Monday AM and
 PM commute.

* Gusty winds and high astronomical tides will result in minor
  coastal flooding across portions of eastern MA. See the coastal
  flood section for more details.

A positively tilted trough will extend from the Great Lakes into the
Lower Mississippi River Valley this evening. The trough lifts into
the OH Valley/eastern Great Lakes by early Monday and is roughly
neutrally tilted. The trough lifts into and through much of New
England by late Monday. A broad low will develop across the SC/NC/VA
region late today. The low deepens as it moves toward the southern
New England coast tonight. The low continues to deepen as it lifts
into the Gulf of Maine early on Monday and Nova Scotia by late in
the day.

Confidence has increased in accumulating snowfall across
northwestern MA into portions of central MA. Guidance has trended a
further southeast for precip tonight and we are also seeing more
snow get squeezed out on the backside of the system within the comma
head. Have hoisted Winter Storm Warnings across northwestern MA into
portions of central MA where am anticipating 4-8 inches of snowfall
accumulation. Given there will be a prolonged period of isothermal
profiles as precip is over our region tonight should see a wet heavy
snowfall across much of the warning area, so am thinking there could
be snow load issues especially once winds pick up on Monday.
Elsewhere did opt to expand the Winter Weather Advisory a bit
further S/E as we are anticipating a bit more accumulation with the
comma head on the backside of the system. This makes sense as we see
a northeasterly 20-40 kt jet in place at 925 hPa for later on
Monday. With this setup am also seeing some low probabilities (10-30
percent chance) of snowfall rates of up to 1" per hour Monday
afternoon. Anticipate that this will make the Monday commutes
difficult across the region. Not out of the question that the
Advisory needs to be expanded further, especially if guidance
continues to trend upward with the afternoon burst of snow. At this
point have just hoisted the Warning and Advisories where am most
confident forecast wise.

Should initially see a good burst of rain/snow across the region
tonight as PWATs increase to 0.6 to 1.25 inches and as it deepens
over the Cape/Islands into early Monday. Will see PWATs lower later
on Monday as the low lifts offshore into the 0.4-0.6 inch range.
However, am seeing a fairly potent comma head in place and we remain
within the poleward exit region of the jet lifting through. Think we
will have a more widespread area where there are impacts to the
Monday PM commute given the timing of the afternoon burst of snow.
The only question at this point is the exact location/extent of the
afternoon precip. Deterministic/ensemble guidance still a bit spread
on where this activity sets up. Synoptic scale guidance slides it
through southern New England, whereas the ARW/NAM12 confines it more
to northern portions of the CWA. Something we will have to hone in
on a bit more in future updates.

Will have increasing NE to N winds late tonight as the low deepens
as it lifts into the Cape/Islands. Expect the warm sector to remain
offshore, so am not anticipating us to tap into the 30-60+ kt
southerly jet. Have more confidence in the stronger winds/gusts as
flow turns to the N/NW later on Monday. Will see 925 hPa winds of 20-
40+ kts which will not be difficult to mix down. Did bump up the
wind speeds/gusts toward the NBM90th percentile during this
timeframe. Given portions of the region will have heavy wet snow,
the snow nature in combination with the wind could exacerbate
potential power outage issues especially where warnings are
currently located.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
305 AM update...

Highlights

Monday night into Tuesday...

983 mb vertically stacked low over Nova Scotia continues moving NE
away from the region. Comma-head snow over southeast MA at 00z will
be short lived and exit out to sea rapidly. Thus, drying trend Mon
evening. As Maritime low continues to intensify, blustery and cold
conditions overspread SNE. Seasonably cold with lows Mon night in
the 20s, but wind chills in the teens.  Tuesday, seasonably cold
with highs in the upper 30s and lower 40s, but will feel cooler
given blustery west winds, gusting 25-35 mph at times. Sunshine, but
likely some afternoon clouds as short wave trough moves across the
area. Could be a few isolated snow showers in western MA from moist
upslope flow off Lake Ontario and across NYS, then up and over the
Berkshires into western MA.

Wednesday into Thursday...

Dry weather and sunshine to start the day Wed, although progressive
pattern with another southern stream system rapidly approaching from
the SW. Thus, precip likely overspreads the region during the
afternoon from SW to NE. Antecedent airmass is slightly colder/drier
than Sunday night, thus, more potential for of a front-end thump of
snow late Wed/Wed evening, with accumulating snow possibly as far SE
into the I-95 corridor of CT/RI/MA. Although, snow likely changes to
rain, especially in the coastal plain, as model consensus is for a
storm track over SNE. The highest totals will likely be across
western MA into northern Worcester county, where GEFS/EPS ensembles
show fairly high probs of 3+ inches, with low to moderate probs of
6+ inches. Turning drier Thu afternoon, as dry slot overspreads the
region. Becoming blustery and much colder, as deepening low tracks
into ME and New Brunswick.

There could be strong winds over southeast MA sometime late Wed
night or Thu morning, as a robust southerly low level jet is
forecast to develop across SE New Eng. This will depend on the exact
storm track and attending warm sector.

Friday into Saturday...

Looks mainly dry and seasonably cold Fri behind the departing
storm. Then low confidence forecast for Sat as there is considerable
spread among the guidance. Followed NBM for now.

MVFR in lingering stratus. Not out of the question a few spots
scatter out to VFR, but cloud bases will be right around 2-3.5
kft. Cloud bases lowering to lower level MVFR and perhaps some
IFR as light rain and light snow spreads in late today. Light
SSW winds to start, but increasing to 10-20 kts late and
shifting to the S/SSE. May see some gusts of 20-25 kts toward
00Z across the Cape/Islands.

Tonight...High confidence in trends, moderate in exact timing.

Becoming IFR/LIFR. Some light snow to start for the interior,
changing to rain for all terminals late. SE winds increasing to
10-20 kt with gusts 20-30 (over the coastal plain) by 12Z,
shifting to the E/NE.

Monday...Moderate confidence.

IFR/LIFR to start. Gradual improvement to MVFR/VFR late in the
afternoon. Expecting snow across the higher terrain and rain
elsewhere to start. Will see rain transitioning over to snow
from northwest to southeast. Should see the coastal plain
transition over to snow during the 18-23Z timeframe. Could see
an additional 1-3 inches across much of the interior. Not out of
the question there is a slushy inch to perhaps 2 for portions of
the coastal plain. Winds out of the N at 10-20 kts increasing to
20-25 kts and shifting to the NW. Wind gusts of 20-30 kts during
the AM increasing 25-35 kts during the afternoon.

Rain continues as the deep low lifts into the Gulf of Maine and
Nova Scotia. May see some snow spreading into western portions
of the waters late in the day as colder air filters in. Winds
shift to the N/NW at 15-30 kts. Winds gusting 25-40 kts. Seas

305 AM update...

* Minor coastal flooding possible midday Monday High Tide

We are watching the late Monday morning/early afternoon high
tide for widespread minor coastal flooding along the eastern MA
coast, Cape, and Nantucket. Astro tides are very high, only about 1
ft below flood stage for many locations. Surge guidance, including
Steven's institute indicating storm surge of up to 1 ft. Given storm
track is over/near Nantucket, best surge will be northward from
Plymouth county to the MA/NH border. Thus, will confine coastal
flood advisory to this region. Later shifts can adjust
southward if needed. Not expecting moderate flooding, as best
pressure falls and associated surge occur closer to 12z,
followed by pressure rises toward high tide at 17z. As for
coastal erosion, should be minor given wave action is only 4-7
ft and limited to one tide cycle.

Wed night/Thu morning...Coastal flood threat is marginal at this
time. The high tide of concern will be the early Thu morning (225
AM) tide which is 10.33 ft at Boston which is fairly low. Would need
about a 2 ft surge for minor flooding and this will depend on
getting a period of strong E/SE winds at high tide which is highly
uncertain. Winds will be shifting to S/SW by Thu morning.
