.SYNOPSIS...
Dry and seasonable weather persists through the better part of
Friday before Hurricane Lee makes a close pass of southern New
England Friday night into Saturday. Increasing surf and rip
currents are likely to begin around Tuesday and continue into
the weekend, although there is low confidence in any other
impacts. Refer to the latest forecasts on Hurricane Lee from the
National Hurricane Center.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
1 pm Update...

No changes to the near term forecast. See updated aviation
discussion below.

10 am Update...

Remaining rain showers have pushed offshore from Cape Cod and
the Islands with cloud cover still lingering behind. As for
inland, mostly sunny skies this morning with no changes to the
forecast.

730 am update...

A much quieter day in progress this morning and, most notably, a
less humid feel to the air as lower dewpoints make their way
into the region.

Previous Discussion...

Today will be a well earned reprieve from our very active weather
pattern as a slow moving cold front pushes offshore; resulting in
high pressure parking over New England.

The current demarcation of the cold front is quite obvious off of
observations, such that showery/foggy conditions persist to the east
of the front, with clear conditions to the west. At present, the
front is draped roughly down the I-95 corridor, and will continue to
move east before briefly stalling near the Cape Cod Canal this
morning. Shower activity, and perhaps a rumble of thunder, will
continue across the Cape through around 15Z before dry air finally
filters in across the coastal zones. There is no risk for severe
weather, but some showers may capitalize on still amplified PWATs
(near 1.5"), dropping a quick 0.25-5" of QPF this morning.

Speaking of dry air, today will feature a September stunner away
from the Cape and Islands where dewpoints drop into upper 40s and
50s. Pleasant, seasonable highs in the 70s and abundant sunshine can
be expected. Expecting rather deep mixing today that will mix breezy
conditions to the surface, primarily across the high terrain; NW
gusts 10 to as high as 20kt are likely this afternoon.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM FRIDAY/...
Dry weather persists overnight with high pressure in place. Opted to
favor the lower end of guidance for overnight temps given mainly
clear skies, dewpoints dropping into the mid 40s and low 50s, and
light winds. Temperatures should radiate quickly after sunset,
especially across the high terrain. The one caveat when it comes to
radiational cooling tonight will be some mid-high clouds streaming
in from the southeast ahead of approaching Hurricane Lee. This will
keep temps a bit more mild across the coastal plain. Overall, it
will be a much cooler night compared to the last week or so, with
lows tumbling into the 40s across far western MA!

Overnight trends continue into Friday as Lee inches closer to
southern New England. As far as daytime impacts go, cloud cover will
continue to overspread much of southern New England, though the
extend of cloud cover is still TBD as minor shifts east or west in
Lee's track could result in sunnier/cloudier conditions across the
western half of the CWA. Winds will shift from the NW to the N/NE,
and will pick up through the day. By late Friday evening, gusts to
~25kt can be expected for Nantucket and perhaps the outer Cape. All
that said, expecting precipitation to hold off at all locations
except perhaps Nantucket and Chatham thorough the period, though if
guidance trends a bit faster with Lee, we could see a touch more
rain Friday afternoon. Overall, not expecting much more than 0.1" of
QPF at any location through 6pm.

With increasing cloud cover and northeast winds, Friday will be a
rather cool day, with highs primarily in the 60s. As mentioned
previously, minor shifts in the timing/track of Lee could have
impacts on cloud cover, which in turn will impact temperatures. A
slower, sunnier trend would result in warmer temperatures,
especially across the CT River Valley. To account for model
uncertainty and a significant spread in guidance, between the low
60s and mid 70s, opted to use the CONSALL blend to "shoot the gap".

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Highlights...

*  Hurricane Lee will pass east of Southern New England Friday night
   and Saturday bringing strong winds, rain, and dangerous marine
   conditions to the region. The lingering question is just how
   strong those winds will be and the extend of any potential
   coastal flooding.

*  Increasing rip current risk and high surf continues into part of
   the weekend.

*  Mid level ridging will bring back dry weather for Sunday into
   Monday before another system brings unsettled weather around
   Sunday night/Monday.

Details...

Friday night Hurricane Lee will be knocking on our doorstep, at near
38N according to the official NHC forecast. As is typical with
tropical storms in the northeast, though, it will be accelerating
its northward movement, arriving directly east of Nantucket by 8AM
Saturday. Guidance has pretty well converged on a track well
offshore of SNE with a landfall anywhere from the Maine coast to
Nova Scotia. Even so, as the storm undergoes extratropical
transition its already expansive wind field will further expand.
This means a stretch of strong winds for southern New England
(stronger winds to the east, lighter winds to the west). Cape Cod
and the islands will get the worst of the winds in this scenario.
The NHC's current wind speed probabilities indicate no chance of
hurricane force winds or even 50 kt winds. Cape Cod has a 20-30%
chance of seeing tropical storm force winds (>39 mph), with a 5-10%
chance for the rest of eastern MA. Keep in mind, though, these can
and will change as the storm gets closer and confidence in its
eventual track is solidified; a small shift east or west would make
a significant difference in expected wind speeds. At this point the
winds look to be increasing Friday night to a maximum around 8 AM
Saturday. As for rainfall, the forecast is currently for 2-4 inches
of rain on the Cape and islands, 1-2 inches in eastern MA, and dry
weather from Rhode Island west. A tropical storm watch is in effect
for the entire coast of RI and MA. The extent of coastal flooding
will depend heavily on the timing/speed of the storm. At this point
the peak of winds looks to be Saturday morning during low tide
(which would reduce the flooding potential), but that is subject to
change with the forward speed of the storm. Even so, fortunately our
tides aren't astronomically high this weekend. Under northeast flow
the greatest risk of coastal flooding would be Cape Cod Bay and the
north shore of MA. That being said, anywhere on the coast could see
some minor flooding or splashover. Winds will slowly come down
through Saturday and Saturday night as Lee moves further away.

Sunday mid level ridging will keep things dry and seasonable before
an approaching shortwave brings scattered showers once again for
Sunday night into Monday. Beyond that there are signs of an
expansive ridge building overhead which would give us a much needed
break from the rain.
