.SYNOPSIS...

Mainly dry ,weather into Saturday, other than a brief spot
shower or two into early Saturday. A brief shot of blustery and
chillier conditions develops behind a cold front Saturday night
and Sunday. This gives way to a warming trend next week, with
above normal temperatures likely by mid week with pretty much
dry weather persisting.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...

930PM Update...

Confidence is growing in showers for SE MA as moisture and
forcing increase due to a LLJ develops over the waters tonight.
Current hi-res guidance has showers starting around midnight
tonight and lasting until around sunrise tomorrow morning.

740PM Update...

Showers did move into the Cape and Islands a bit earlier then
model guidance indicated so forecast was updated to bring
slight chance pops to that area. Otherwise no major changes were
needed for the forecast this evening. Cloudy overnight with
scattered showers. Lows should stay warmer then last night with
lots of low cloud cover.

Previous Discussion...

Still a lot of dry air to overcome. Do not have much confidence
in much more than a few sprinkles across southern New England
tonight. The greatest risk this evening will be towards the
Berkshires with a little more of an upslope component. That
focus will shift to the southern coastal waters, and perhaps the
Cape and islands overnight. This will be from the combination
of a passing cold front and a mid level shortwave.

Cloudy skies continue until the passage of this cold front.
Thought the NBM temperature guidance was reasonable.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM SUNDAY/...

A cold front moves farther offshore Saturday into Saturday
night. A drying trend overspreads our region from NW to SE.
Will still be dealing with a cyclonic flow and cold pool aloft,
so likely not going to be completely clear for long. Clouds
more likely out towards the Berkshires. Modest west winds should
preclude strong radiational cooling Saturday night, although it
will get colder behind the aforementioned cold front.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Highlights

* Cold, blustery, and an isolated snow shower for Sunday.

* Surface high builds across region leading to a dry period of
  weather along with mild temperatures.

Sunday...

A chilly and blustery day is on tap given that southern New England
falls between two different pressure systems. Guidance remains in
good agreement that a 1035+ MB high builds over the central region
of the CONUS and a 990 MB low over the mouth of the St. Lawrence
River. Thus, an increasing pressure gradient will allow for gusty
winds. Forecast soundings show DEEP mixing late morning into the
afternoon, potentially above 800mb, based off 12z GFS/NAM soundings
with winds at the top of the boundary layer between 40 and 50 knots.
While we do not expect all wind to transfer down to the surface,
there is the potential for a period of gusty northwest wind. This
part of the forecast will need to be monitored over subsequent runs
for any potential wind headlines. For now, widespread gusts between
20 and 30 knots with locally higher gusts of 35 to 40 knots across
the Berkshires and northern hills of Worcester County.

Due to all this CAA and gusty wind, you can expect it will be a
colder day and noticeably colder than Saturday with highs in the
30s. When you added in the wind gusts, the apparent temperature
during the afternoon do not get above the mid 20s.

A dry day is expected with surface high pressure building in, though
a spot flurry or two is not out of the question with a mid-level
cold pool and shortwave passage during the afternoon.

Monday through Thursday...

Set Up: Global guidance is in good agreement the beginning of the
week will feature zonal flow, then trend to a trough in the west and
a ridge in the east. At the surface, a 1035 MB high centered over
the central CONUS shifts east for Monday and expands northward as it
is trapped under the mid-level ridging by midweek. This allows for a
quiet period of weather and mild/warm temperatures. Late in the week
the ridge shifts off shore allowing for our next chance of
precipitation.

Temperature: After a chilly Sunday, temperatures are more seasonable
for both Monday and Tuesday. Looking ahead to the mid-week, the CWA
is treated to a surge or warmth from WAA. Looking at the ensembles
there is a growing probability of afternoon highs reaching well over
50F, in fact, mid to upper 50s are likely for both Wednesday and
Thursday. As previous mentioned in the last AFD, given we will have
a prolonged period of dry conditions, persistent W/SW flow building
into mid week, and pre green up vegetation, it is quite possible
that we overachieve on temperatures compared to what most models are
currently picking up on. Our records come mid-week are upper 70s to
low 80s, do not expect we will be that warm. Though highs 55-60
degrees are 5-10 degrees above what is normal for late-March.

Dewpoints are low, leading to low RH values, less than 30% Monday
and Tuesday. Depending on the strength of the winds, fire weather
concerns may arise in areas that do not maintain snowpack.

Precipitation: Surface high pressure provides a rather dry week
ahead with our next real chance of rain late next week and possibly
into next weekend.

.AVIATION /06Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...

Forecaster Confidence Levels:

Low - less than 30 percent.
Medium - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

06z TAF Update...

Today...High Confidence.

A brief band of rain showers ahead of a cold front will clip
parts of CT/RI/SE MA before moving offshore by 13z/14z. This
may bring brief MVFR conditions to parts of this region with the
best chance toward the Cape/Islands...where a period of IFR
conditions may even impact ACK. Any of these brief lower
cigs/vsbys will exit the Cape/Islands by mid morning.
Otherwise...VFR conditions today with winds shifting to the NW
at around 10 knots.

Tonight...High Confidence.

VFR but can not rule out brief MVFR cigs along with a brief
flurry/snow shower across the interior with the best chance
along the east slopes of the Berks. W winds 5-15 knots.

Sunday...High Confidence.

VFR. W winds 25 to 35 knots with perhaps a few gusts near 40
knots in the high terrain.

KBOS Terminal...High confidence in TAF.

KBDL Terminal...High confidence in TAF.

Surface winds will turn more westerly by daybreak Saturday, but
marginal 5+ foot seas will continue to impact the southern
outer coastal waters through Saturday night. Gusty west winds
should increase late Saturday night, too.
