.SYNOPSIS...
Sunny to begin today but clouds increase toward overcast by this
afternoon. A storm passing to our south will bring a period of
minor accumulating snow tonight into Saturday morning, mainly
for areas west of the Connecticut Valley. Remains unsettled
with off and on rain and snow showers and breezy conditions
Saturday, but no accumulations are expected. High pressure
delivers dry, tranquil weather Sunday, then a potentially
significant storm will impact the region during the first half
of next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
9am Update...

With temperatures already reaching into the upper 30s and low
40s, increased highs for today across eastern MA and the CT
River Valley given our tendency to overachieve the last few
days coupled with dry conditions and light winds. Overall,
should see a few places eclipse 50F this afternoon even as
clouds continue to spread east.

630 am update...

Sunny skies to start the day as cirrus beginning to expand over
western MA/CT ahead of this evening's system. The main change
with this morning's update was to speed up the approach of
clouds a bit. Otherwise forecast is on track.

Previous Discussion...

NW-SE oriented sfc ridge axis extends across Southern New England
early this AM, with clear skies, gradually falling dewpoints and
easing NW winds. Current temps ranged from the mid 20s to around
freezing for most. Infrared and nighttime microphysics RGB satellite
imagery shows an extensive shield of high clouds, its eastern extent
trailing from about Watertown NY SE to Atlantic City NJ. This is
associated with high level moisture from an organizing area of sfc
low pressure centered near the Cincinnati OH vicinity. This feature
will have a greater influence on our weather moving into the
tonight/Saturday period (more on that in the Short Term section).

For today, the main forecast challenge is on high temperatures, in
light of an earlier arrival of the mid to high cloud canopy and an
expectation that a synoptic/sea-breeze hybrid will bring cooler
temps along the immediate eastern MA coast by this afternoon.
Looking at increasing mid to high clouds, and the extent to which
those clouds limit insolation will greatly affect today's highs for
all areas. Should see mid-level OVC develop in all areas by early to
mid afternoon, closer to late-morning/noon across western sections.
Thinking highs mainly in the 40s, with upper 40s across eastern MA
and northern-central RI. Winds will turn onshore near the coast by
early to mid afternoon, which will bring a steady drop in temps.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM SATURDAY/...
355 AM Update:

Tonight:

* Minor-accumulating wet snow expected tonight, mainly west of
  Worcester to Providence. Up to 4 inches locally possible in the
  Berkshires and far western Hartford County, with coatings to a
  couple inches further east.

Shortwave disturbance aloft strengthens into an mid-upper closed low
with sfc low expected to trek from western PA SE to the waters south
of Long Island. This feature is expected to bring a period of
precipitation starting early tonight mainly from an Orange-Worcester-
Providence RI line south and west, continuing into the overnight.
While areas further north and east of this general line see
increased clouds towards OVC but the majority of the night is dry
and temperatures should remain mild enough to keep any precipitation
that does make it further east very light and in the form of plain
rain.

Stop us if you're heard THIS story before, but in the interior,
it's another situation where thermal structure is borderline
for accumulating snow. Dynamic cooling owing to the position of
the upper level low will help to cool the column enough to bring
an initial plain rain over to a wet snow mix late tonight into
the overnight, but sfc temps will likely still be around 32-35F
where snow does occur. In addition, increasing NE breezes will
add an element of upslope lift against the Berkshires and into
the hillier western portions of Hartford County. Overnight model
guidance also continued to display an upward liquid-equivalent
QPF trend, which brought storm total accumulations up slightly
but not significantly (some snow will be lost to melting at
first). Absent both significant synoptic scale ascent and
factors favoring banding, we expect snow to be more of a steady
light to perhaps briefly/locally moderate intensity with all
accumulation occurring during the nighttime hours.

For the overnight hrs, snow amounts range from a coating to 2
inches across western RI/central MA into the Hartford-
Springfield corridors. Amts then increase to as much as four
inches against the eastern slopes of the Berkshires and western
Hartford County. While these totals would nominally support
winter weather advisories, because of the expected localized
nature to these accumulations, and that for Hartford County the
larger totals cover such a small part of the county itself,
we've refrained from hoisting winter weather advisories at this
point. Even where it snows the most in the hilly terrain of
western MA and western Hartford County, snow should be
manageable from a snow removal point of view.

Lows tonight range from the upper 20s to the mid to upper 30s,
mildest near the coastal plain.

Saturday:

For Saturday, our surface low pressure then continues ESE,
deepening to a sub-990 mb cyclone just east of the 40/70
benchmark. Expect the precipitation shield to continue to shift
southward as well in the interior, and as NE winds increase it
will plunge colder and drier air southward from ME/NH. Most of
the day will still be unsettled and while there may be light
rain or light rain/snow, little if any accumulation is
anticipated. One thing that does stand out across tonight's
synoptic models and the finer-resolution CAMs is an area of
ocean effect precip during the mid to late afternoon which
develops as winds become N/NE for eastern MA; in fact this might
be Greater Boston and southeast MA's best shot at seeing any
non- trace snow accumulation during this event, but it won't be
much more than that.

On the winds, because of the cyclone's rather rapid deepening, it
will enhance NE winds and gusts especially Saturday afternoon across
eastern and southeast MA and Cape Cod/Islands. NAM 950 mb winds are
stronger at around 40 to 45 kt, while the GFS is about 10 kt lighter
at that isobaric level. Think gusts range from 25 to 35 mph, but
gusts in the low 40 mph range could be possible for at least
Nantucket.

Sided high temps on the colder side of guidance, given northerly
cold advection and limited if any insolation. Have highs in the mid
to upper 30s given those factors.

Sunday...

Quiet and dry weather returns for the second half of the weekend as
a mid level ridge axis moves overhead late in the day. This will
make for a good amount of sun, light winds, and highs in the mid to
upper 40s.

Monday through Wednesday...

Our quiet pattern breaks down with a prolonged period of unsettled
weather arriving for the Mon through Wed forecast period. This, as
northern stream energy digs into the Midwest on Sunday night,
phasing with strong southern stream energy over the southeast U.S.
Mon/Tue. This deep trough will produce one surface low over the Ohio
Valley and deepen another over the Carolinas, both of which merge in
the vicinity of southern New England Monday night into Tuesday, It
then struggles to exit east thanks to a blocking high over
Newfoundland. Thus, unsettled weather may linger well into Wednesday
before the system finally exits east.

Guidance has fairly consistently depicted the chance for a high
impact winter storm with this system, mainly for interior/high
elevations of southern New England and especially northern New
England. At this distance in time we remain focused on ensemble data
for things like the storm track which will ultimately determine who
gets snow and how much. This guidance, while still widely dispersed,
seems to be converging on a surface low track near Cape Cod. This
track, well inside the 70/40 benchmark if it comes to pass, would
herald an interior/high elevation snow storm for southern New
England with rain for southern and eastern zones (perhaps changing
to snow on the back end). Too soon to put all our eggs in one
basket, but that's where things stand now. While confidence in
specifics is low, confidence that late Monday-Wed will be wet and
windy is moderate to high given near 100% probabilities of at least
0.1" of rain over all of southern New England.

Thursday...

Beyond Wednesday a mid level ridge will bring the return of dry and
quiet weather with seasonable temperatures.

.AVIATION /18Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Forecaster Confidence Levels:

Low - less than 30 percent.
Medium - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

12z TAF Update:

This evening and overnight: High Confidence in Timing, moderate
confidence in the eastern extend of IFR conditions

VFR conditions this evening will gradually give way to MVFR and
eventually IFR from west to east overnight as light to moderate
snow showers develop. Snow showers will spread east between
03-09Z tonight with the heaviest snow restricted to the west of
Worcester to Providence Corridor. With surface temperatures
above freezing, any accumulations at terminals will be minor,
with a coating to 2" possible at BDL/BAF, lesser totals
amounting to no more than wet runways will extend eastward to
the BOS/PVD corridor.

Weak seabreeze conditions will dissipate after 00Z this evening.
Light flow will transition from the WSW to the east by daybreak
tomorrow. Winds will pick up by daybreak, generally 10-15kt,
with gusts to 20 kt possible.

Saturday: Moderate confidence.

MVFR-IFR continues early, with the lowest cigs expected for
western terminals. Minor improvement to MVFR-low grade VFR
possible with drying NE flow Saturday afternoon. Precipitation
shield will linger over eastern terminals, including BOS and the
Cape through the afternoon. Snow will gradually transition to a
rain-snow mix and eventually to rain for eastern terminals by
the afternoon.

Very strong E-NE winds will develop. Winds 20-30kt with gusts to
35kt likely. Gusts may reach 40kt across the islands for a
period late Saturday afternoon and early evening.

Saturday Night:
VFR conditions redevelop as low pressure pulls out to sea. Winds
also begin to diminish as they shift more northerly overnight.
Gusty winds of 20-35kt will diminish to 10-25kt by daybreak,
with the highest winds lingering across Cape Cod and the eastern
MA coast. Winds drop to below 10kt for our western terminals.

KBOS Terminal...High confidence in trends, moderate on timing
onshore winds. VFR becoming MVFR overnight as snow showers
overspread between 06-09Z tonight. Isolated IFR possible at
times Saturday morning. Light S/SE flow strengthens and shifts
to the NE as low pressure strengthens offshore. NE winds 20-25kt
gusting to 30kt possible Saturday afternoon. VFR redevelops as
 pulls away Saturday night; winds shift more northerly and
diminish to between 10-20kt by daybreak Sunday.

KBDL Terminal...High confidence in TAF. VFR through the early
evening. Developing light to moderate snow showers will
gradually degrade cigs to MVFR and IFR overnight. Onset of MVFR
shortly after 00z with brief initial rain then becoming steady
light snow after 04z. Slushy accumulation possible overnight.
Gusty E/NE flow Saturday, 15-25kt. VFR redevelops late Saturday
afternoon and evening as low pressure pulls out to sea. Winds
diminish overnight to below 10kt by daybreak Sunday.

Outlook /Saturday Night through Tuesday/...

Sunday: VFR. Breezy.

Sunday Night: VFR.

Monday: Mainly MVFR, with local IFR possible. Windy with gusts
up to 30 kt. RA likely.

Monday Night: Mainly IFR, with areas MVFR possible. Strong
winds with local gusts up to 40 kt. RA likely, chance SN.

Tuesday: MVFR/IFR conditions possible. Windy with gusts up to
35 kt. SN likely, chance RA.

230 AM Update:

Overall high confidence.

SCAs continue on most eastern waters due to leftover 4-6 ft seas. As
a deepening cyclone moves into the offshore waters, NE winds will
increase Saturday into Saturday night. Gale Watches have been
hoisted for the southern waters.

For today, winds are light and sub-SCA. Seas 4-6 ft will be slow to
decrease but anticipate that seas will drop below 5 ft by later this
afternoon. East winds increase tonight to around 15 to 20 kt by
daybreak Sat, with seas 3-5 ft but increasing again.

Conditions then deteriorate to a greater extent on Sat, with NE
winds increasing to SCA and then toward Gale levels on the southern
waters by Sat aftn. NE sustained winds may reach gale criteria on
the far southeast waters where the most hazardous conditions are
anticipated, but gusts in the 35-40 kt range seem likely on the
southern offshore waters. NE winds 25-30 kt on the eastern waters.
Seas will build and become increasingly rough, and could reach as
high as 10 ft during the day Sat. Rain will also reduce visibility.

Outlook /Saturday Night through Tuesday/...

Saturday: Strong winds with gusts up to 40 kt. Areas of rough
seas. Chance of rain. Local visibility 1 to 3 nm.

Saturday Night: Low risk for gale force winds with gusts up to
40 kt. Rough seas up to 11 ft.
