.A storm system will move into Colorado late Tuesday and intensify 
over eastern Colorado on Wednesday. Snow will develop in the 
mountains Tuesday afternoon and then spread east across the I-25 
Corridor and Plains Tuesday evening. The snow will likely be heavy 
at times Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, before gradually

Radar shows a few snow showers in the mountains this morning,
otherwise quiet morning for northeast Colorado. Today will be
overall drier; however, the mountains could see a few light snow
showers given shallow moisture. Day Snow-Fog satellite imagery shows
lingering areas of fog and low stratus in some of the valleys of
Weld, Morgan, and Logan counties. Satellite trends show it gradually
burning off. As a result, kept patchy fog in the grids in the
mentioned areas. Expect it to lift out by the afternoon as dry air
works into the mid and low levels.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Satellite imagery showing a well defined low pressure circulation
tracking east-northeast across Kansas. There is still a fair
amount of cloud cover over northeast Colorado associated with
this. The mid/upper levels will clear around sunrise. However,
expect low clouds and fog to linger over parts of northeast
Colorado through mid morning. Best chance for fog will be Greeley
eastward to Sterling and Akron.

Weak ridging will move across Colorado today behind the exiting
system and in advance of the next storm system. It will be a mild
and dry day with highs in the 40s across northeast Colorado.
Satellite showing some moisture trapped in the mountains across
Colorado and Utah. Even though ridging will occur today, there
should be enough low level moisture over the mountains to produce
light snowfall in places through tonight. Most mountain locations
should see little to no snowfall, but isolated spots over the
northern mountains could see up to 3 inches of snow through
tonight.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Sunday)

Summary: An impactful winter storm is expected to move into the
region late Tuesday evening and continue through most of
Wednesday... with heavy snow likely across most of the plains.
Confidence continues to slowly increase... and difficult travel is
possible for the Wednesday AM commute.

Details: An upper level trough will be centered near the Great
Basin/Mojave Desert Tuesday morning, which will strengthen and
shift into eastern Colorado by Wednesday morning. The
evening/overnight guidance has come into better agreement with the
general track of this system, with only a couple of hi-res
members (namely the 06z NAM/3km NAM) deviating significantly from
the multi-model mean. This is also not particularly surprising, as
we've noticed issues with the HRRR/NAM handling systems in the
36-60hr timeframe.

There are also still some failure modes for this storm that are
worth discussing. A continued northerly trend with the H5/H7 lows
would shift the best synoptic forcing to our north, and would also
keep more of a NNWerly flow aloft on Wednesday compared to the
currently progged N/NNE flow. A weaker/more progressive system
would shift heavier snow to the east of the forecast area. A quick
glance at the individual ensemble members from the GEFS/ECME
don't show any obvious signs of either of these solutions and thus
forecast confidence is higher than it typically is in this
timeframe.

While there remains some uncertainty across the urban corridor,
the ECMWF Extreme Forecast Index for snowfall denotes high values
(~0.8-0.95) across a majority of our plains along with Shift of
Tails values of 2... both supportive of a "very unusual" event
east of I-25. Our snowfall forecast has been nudged up a touch
tonight and a few isolated totals exceeding a foot of snow can't
be ruled out.

Snowfall will come to an end late Wednesday with weak ridging
building by Thursday. Another system will try to shift into the
region by Friday, though this storm has continued to trend
weaker/further south... with minimal impacts in our forecast area.
The weekend should be mostly quiet, with another potential storm
arriving near the start of next week.

Expect VFR conditions today and tonight. VRB to light southerly
winds at KDEN today then returning to drainage. KBJC will continue
to have westerly component winds with gusts 20-25 kts.

Light SSW winds transition to northeasterly in the afternoon.
There is some uncertainty in the timing of this transition, but it
will likely be in the 18-21Z timeframe. There is a low chance for
snow late afternoon, but better chances will be after 00z.

...WINTER STORM WATCH I-25 CORRIDOR AND NORTHEAST COLORADO PLAINS
TUESDAY EVENING THROUGH WEDNESDAY...

This hazardous weather outlook is for northeast and north central
Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

A isolated to scattered snow showers will be possible in the
mountains today and tonight. A few inches will be possible over
the northern mountains, with little to no snowfall elsewhere.
Patchy fog lingers in the valleys of Weld, Morgan, and Logan
counties this morning. Expect it to gradually burn into the
afternoon.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday

Snow and hazardous travel conditions will develop and spread
northeast across the region Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday
evening. Travel in the mountains and foothills may become slick
and slow by the Tuesday afternoon/evening commute, while the I-25
Corridor could see deteriorating conditions by the latter portions
of the pm commute. The heaviest snow is expected to fall overnight
Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Travel may be difficult over
portions of the area due to heavy snow accumulations. While most
locations should see 4 to 8 inches of snow, there is some potential
for as much as 10 to 12 inches of snow, mainly east of I-25. Some
blowing and drifting snow will be possible over the plains as
well, although winds are not anticipated to gust much more than
30-35 mph. Travel conditions should improve later Wednesday as
snow gradually diminishes.

A weaker system is expected Thursday night and Friday, with light
snow possible across the mountains.
