Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Denver/Boulder CO 1152 PM MDT Thu Oct 26 2023 .KEY MESSAGES... - Winter storm is expected to bring heavy snowfall across the mountains by late Friday, spreading into the lower elevations this weekend. - Much colder temperatures this weekend into early next week, with temperatures falling into the single digits to teens across the entire forecast area. && .UPDATE... Issued at 603 PM MDT Thu Oct 26 2023 We issued a freeze warning for tonight the Denver/Boulder area north to Fort Collins and Greeley. Many locations in these areas have not had a killing freeze yet. North winds were persistent enough to keep the low cloud edge over Denver, and it's pushed southward again now. We're getting a brief surge of 20-30 mph NNE winds now that have brought in colder saturated air and are producing some drizzle. This should subside in an hour or two and we'll switch to a more easterly flow with lighter speeds. There has been some dry air poking into the area north of Fort Collins/Greeley with some clearing, while colder saturated air is moving from the Nebraska panhandle across the rest of northeastern Colorado. It will be interesting to see how far south the clearing gets and whether the edge of that area fills in again with fog/low clouds later tonight. We think Denver will stay under the clouds, but it could be close. There will likely be some westward push to the fog/stratus later tonight into Friday morning as the flow reorganizes, with drier air eventually spreading into the plains and the moisture pooled up against the foothills. But by mid morning Friday, there will be south winds coming off the Palmer Divide that should dry out at least the east side of the Denver area. We've updated everything to try to portray this complicated pattern. Main change was to the cloud cover and to add some areas of fog to the lower foothills. We also dropped tonight's lows a degree or two as the cold advection looks a little stronger/sooner than forecast. && .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Friday) Issued at 300 PM MDT Thu Oct 26 2023 Satellite GOES-16 displays pockets of showers near Jackson and Grand counties. A weak upper level trough continues north passing Colorado pushing northeast to the Great Lakes. As this system sweeps through the mountains, mid-level moisture increases along with westerly flow thus allowing for light snow of 2-4 inches across parts of Park and Gore Ranges. Fog continues to linger across the eastern plains and parts of the urban corridor. Our high temperatures were too high this afternoon thus this forecaster is still rooting for mid 40s to low 50s across the plains. With the addition of high clouds entering the CWA and lack of sun, it is likely our good friend, fog, will stick around overnight into Friday morning. Uncertainty continues in how long this will linger into Friday morning but as the next front arrives Friday morning extending from the foothills to the plains, this will likely keep low clouds and low visibility just before noon Friday. Friday afternoon, expect temperatures to trend below normal across the region. The banding fun begins Friday night in the long-term period. .LONG TERM...(Friday night through Thursday) Issued at 300 PM MDT Thu Oct 26 2023 All eyes turn to some "spooky" weather in the forecast this weekend as we approach the end of October, with snow and much colder temperatures in the forecast. The overall synoptic pattern hasn't changed significantly over the past several forecasts. A positively-tilted trough axis is expected to drop from the northwestern Rockies into Utah by late Saturday night, with a strong upper jet streak lifting into Colorado. A cold front should push into the lower elevations near mid-day on Saturday, ushering in much colder air to the region, while also providing some shallow/weak upslope. The broad/slow moving trough axis should also provide modest ascent from late Friday into early Sunday. There are still some notable differences across guidance that need to be worked out over the next couple of days. There are two features worth watching at the moment - (1) the evolution of the shortwave and its orientation as it detaches from the longwave trough, and (2) the timing and location of the main upper jet streak as it lifts into northern Colorado and drifts eastward Saturday night into Sunday. Given the expected banded nature of snowfall, any subtle shifts could mean the difference between a little bit of slush or an impactful snowfall - especially over the lower elevations, where the upslope/orographic lift is weaker. All that said, our forecast hasn't changed significantly. A multi-model/ensemble blend of guidance remains fairly consistent, despite some wobbling among the deterministic models today, and has continued the trend of gradually increasing QPF. Heavy snow is likely across most of our mountain zones, with totals of 9 to 18 inches above 9-10kft. Have opted for a Winter Storm Watch for the mountain zones with the potential for some heavy snowfall rates at times, with the most impactful part of the storm coming early Saturday morning to Saturday night. For the urban corridor and plains, a couple of inches of snow looks likely (especially west of I-25)... with the potential for localized totals in excess of 6 inches. Though a few deterministic solutions offered by the 12z model suite would justify warning criteria in the Denver metro, we'd need to see a lot more consistency from the near-term/hi-res guidance to feel confident in bumping up totals significantly. In addition to the snow, this system is expected to bring much colder temperatures across the region. The initial cold front on Saturday should keep highs in the 30s across most of the region, falling into the teens by Saturday night. Sunday won't be any warmer, with highs generally near freezing across the plains. Sunday night's lows should be the coldest of the season, with lows in the single digits to mid-teens across the urban corridor and plains. Some of the cold spots in the high country may drop below zero, especially if we see relatively clear skies. Cool northwest flow will prevail behind this storm system, with temperatures gradually warming back towards normal values. Large scale ridging building across the Western Coast is expected to gradually shift east and flatten by mid week. Highs are forecast to remain in the 40s Monday and Tuesday and should make it into the upper 50s or low 60s by Wednesday. && .AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Friday night) Issued at 1143 PM MDT Thu Oct 26 2023 MVFR ceilings expected to continue until around 12z with bkn- ovc020-030, with brief pockets of IFR ceilings around 010. Light SE winds overnight. After 12z Saturday, lower clouds will scatter out with VFR conditions through Saturday evening. SE winds will continue at KDEN and KAPA inducing a Denver Cyclone, which will result in light NNW winds at KBJC. SE winds will increase this afternoon, with gusts 15-20 kts possible at KAPA. ILS ceilings 050-070 could start to develop at KDEN towards 12z Saturday morning. && .BOU WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
