...TWO CONSECUTIVE DAYS OF CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS...

.Strong southwest winds have developed this afternoon from Park
County eastward across the Palmer Divide area, most of Denver, and
some of the adjacent plains. The winds, in combination of drying
fuels and very low humidity will create critical fire weather
conditions that will last into this evening. 

Another round of strong, gusty winds can be expected on Friday.
This time, those winds will be from the northwest ushering in
cooler temperatures. However, the airmass will remain quite dry in
the lower elevations so critical fire weather conditions can again
be expected in areas that haven't seen appreciable snowfall
lately.

...TWO CONSECUTIVE DAYS OF CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS...

.Strong southwest winds from Park County eastward across the 
Palmer Divide area, most of Denver, and the adjacent plains will 
gradually weaken this evening. Until then, the winds in 
combination of drying fuels and very low humidity will create 
critical fire weather conditions.

Another round of strong, gusty winds can be expected on Friday.
This time, those winds will be from the northwest ushering in
cooler temperatures. However, the airmass will remain quite dry
in the lower elevations so critical fire weather conditions can
again be expected in areas that haven't seen appreciable snowfall
lately. This also includes South Park, which has been expanded
into the Red Flag Warning for Friday.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Upper level ridge axis will track across Colorado today. It will
be replaced by an increasing southwest flow aloft tonight in
advance of the next Pacific storm system. At the surface a cold
front is just entering northeast Colorado. It will back southwest
through the morning hours and bring a weak northeast wind shift
with it. There are some low clouds across western Nebraska behind
the front. Expect them to move into far northeast Colorado this
morning. As these low clouds encounter the higher terrain, the
clouds may be on the ground and result in fog. The cooler airmass
behind the front will be shallow, so the mountains and higher
foothills may be above the cooler air and be as warmer or warmer
than the northeast plains today. Temperatures tonight will
slightly warmer than last night, but readings will continue to be
a little below normal.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday)

Thursday, the trough will advance and flow aloft will be turning
southwesterly and increasing, as there is a roughly 100 knot jet
embedded ahead. Synoptic ascent will also be increasing though
northeast Colorado will be under the right exit region of that jet
until probably evening, and the convergence aloft will conflict
with that ascent. The southwesterly flow will regardless support
orographic showers in mountains as long as it isn't too southerly,
and there will be strong lapse rates, though there looks to be
very modest moisture. It will dry and warming across the lower
elevations especially with downsloping winds and lee troughing,
though temperatures should still be moderated by snow cover on the
far northeast plains. It also looks to be very breezy by
afternoon due to good mixing, forecast soundings suggest mixing to
around 600 mb where there should be around 40 to 50 knots. I
adjusted our forecast winds down to account for the known bias in
the current NBM and we don't expect winds strong enough to warrant
wind highlights. Expect peak afternoon gusts generally 40 to 55
mph across much of northeast Colorado, favoring the southern
mountains, foothills, Palmer Divide and adjacent plains through
Lincoln County. These strong winds combined with particularly dry
conditions in the same area will mean widespread critical and
elevated fire weather conditions from late morning through early
evening. While the higher terrain will still have snow cover by
that time, much of the plains especially east and south of the
Palmer Divide will not and critical fire weather conditions are
likely. I upgraded to a Red Flag Warning, expanded the area to
include the rest of the plains of Elbert and Lincoln Counties, and
extended the timing to 8 PM MDT.

Thursday evening, the jet embedded ahead of the trough should be
moved across northeast Colorado such that we are under the left
exit region with divergence aloft, and also with greater general
synoptic ascent. Cold air will move into the mountains and the
orographic flow will turn northwesterly which is much more
favorable for precipitation. There should also be another,
stronger front across the plains, bringing precipitation to the
plains, as rain first then mix, then snow by night. Late Thursday
and early Friday, with the trough axis overhead and colder air
aloft, decent lapse rates, the best best synoptic ascent, and
strong frontogenesis, we likely see the greatest and most
widespread precipitation from the system. However, the whole event
will be moisture limited especially over the plains. Event total
snowfall accumulations (through Friday) will likely be generally 3
to 6 inches across the mountains, up to 9 for the favored peaks
and only 1 to 3 inches for the valleys, and only about an inch on
the plains, slushy. I have issued a Winter Weather Advisory for
the Park Range from Thursday noon through and night. I currently
agree with the previous forecaster that the impacts would likely
minimal and it probably isn't worth a highlight right now.

Friday, the system should be exiting and we will have rising
pressure heights, northwesterly flow aloft. Should be cooler again
and clearing over plains while light showers persist in mountains
through evening. Models are showing strong subsidence behind this
trough and strong winds by Friday afternoon, again gusting
generally 40 to 55 mph again but much more widespread across
northeast Colorado. We will assess the need for any wind
highlights following our current set of highlights.

This weekend, models have a flat ridge over Colorado with mostly
zonal flow aloft as the next trough sinks toward the Pacific
Northwest. Skies should be partly cloudy to mostly clear and a
warming trend again. Temperatures are forecast back to near normal
across the plains Saturday and a bit warm Sunday, with highs
possibly approaching 70 F around the greater Denver area, while
cooler air lingers across the high country.

Early next week, models have the next trough moving over the
western states and deepening, with increasingly more southwesterly
flow aloft over Colorado and showers increasing in the mountains
again and maybe getting out onto the plains a bit by Tuesday.
However, ensemble forecast systems indicate lower confidence in
this next system at this range. Generally, expect the next trough
incoming by around mid-week, and much greater confidence once this
upcoming system has passed.

VFR to prevail through Wednesday night under high clouds. Southwest
winds to linger overnight and then become variable towards 12Z as a
cold front nears. Winds become northeast behind the cold front
14-15Z and then slowly turn easterly by 18Z. By mid afternoon, a
Denver Cyclone forms and lifts northeast through the late
afternoon hours. This is expected to produce a wind shift to the
north or northeast 21-24Z.

Strong and gusty southwest winds will develop over the southern
foothills, Palmer Divide, and portions of the adjacent plains
Thursday. Gusts of 35 to 55 mph can be expected and minimum
humidity will likely drop to 10 to 15 percent. Snow cover is
mostly melted in this area. We've upgraded to a Red Flag Warning,
expanded the area to include the rest of the plains of Elbert and
Lincoln Counties, and extended the timing to 8 PM MDT.

Dry and warm weather is expected Thursday, with elevated to
critical fire weather conditions likely on the Palmer Divide and
adjacent plains south and east due to strong, gusty winds.

Widespread snowfall is likely across the high country Thursday
afternoon through Friday, with several inches of accumulation and
slick travel conditions at times. The plains will see a chance of
rain showers changing to snow showers Thursday night into Friday
morning.

After dry weather Saturday, snow may return to portions of the
high country toward Sunday or Monday.
