What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this heat advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Birmingham, AL wrote its last area forecast discussion before this heat advisory went out at Aug 20, 2:25 PM CDT, 4 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Aug 20, 2:25 PM CDT, 4 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Birmingham AL
225 PM CDT Sun Aug 20 2023

...New LONG TERM...

.SHORT TERM...
(This afternoon through Monday)
Issued at 1052 AM CDT SUN AUG 20 2023

The pattern is now locked in across much of the CONUS, with the
500mb ridge continuing to amplify over the Great Plains. 500mb
heights should increase to over 600 decameters by this afternoon,
which is a height anomaly of over 3 standard deviations. The bad
news is that heights will continue to rise, close to 602
decameters by Monday afternoon. As a result, most of the CONUS
will remain high and dry with extreme heat building across the
plains, Ohio Valley, and the Southeast. Central Alabama will
remain in a very light easterly flow at the surface this
afternoon, keeping the deepest moisture off to the south over the
Gulf. Dewpoints are expected to mix down into the 60s which will
keep our heat index values at bay for one more day. High
temperatures should be able to rise about a degree or so warmer
than yesterday and top out in the mid to upper 90s.

We'll unfortunately end our streak of days without a Heat Advisory
on Monday as low-level moisture increases from the south.
Dewpoints in the lower 70s coupled with high temps in the upper
90s to near 100 will send heat index values over 105 degrees
across much of the area. Rain chances will remain at zero as upper
heights increase even further. A tropical wave in the Central Gulf
of Mexico will remain well to our south as it traverses west on
the southern periphery of the upper ridge.

&&

.LONG TERM...
(Tuesday through Sunday)
Issued at 225 PM CDT SUN AUG 20 2023

/Hot weather is baked into the forecast for the week ahead/

An expansive and strong area of high pressure, centered over the
central U.S., will produce day's long excessive heat. Across central
Alabama, high temperatures are forecast to top out in the upper 90s
to lower 100s through Saturday, of which will be in record
territory. When factoring in humidity levels, heat index values
should be in a 105-110 range from late morning to early evening each
day. The high pressure system will also result in rain-free weather.

Global models continue to suggest a trough near the Pacific
Northwest on Tuesday will skirt along the northern perimeter of the
ridge, generally tracking along the U.S./Canada border through the
week. The trough is then modeled to turn southeastward toward the
Mid-Atlantic. If this evolution pans out, we could see a front head
our way over the weekend, offering some shower/storm activity and a
downward bump in temperatures by Sunday.

.AVIATION...
(18Z TAFS)
Issued at 149 PM CDT SUN AUG 20 2023

VFR conditions will continue through the forecast period. Light
easterly winds can be expected this afternoon, going mostly calm
overnight. Light easterly to southeasterly surface winds are
forecast Monday afternoon.

56/GDG

&&

.FIRE WEATHER...

High pressure will remain in place across the region through the
upcoming week. Minimum RHs will remain above critical values but could
drop to just below 30% in a few areas on Wednesday. 20ft winds
and transport winds will remain light through the week.
