Light winds will continue through the night across the area, ahead
of a deepening low pressure centered in southeast Alberta this
evening. The main change with this update was to add in patchy fog
from the Turtle Mountains through the James River Valley, with
forecast soundings showing potential for fog late tonight into
Thursday morning. High-res guidance is inconsistent in the
location of advertised reduced visibility, so opted to broad
brush for now. Otherwise expect a calm night across the area with
lows in the mid 20s to lower 30s.

UPDATE Issued at 631 PM CST Wed Dec 6 2023

Quiet weather continues this evening after a very mild early
December day. KBIS max temperature ended up at 66, which tied the
record, with 67 degrees F at Mandan the highest temperature we've
seen. There was a large swatch of observations in the mid 60s from
Dunn County through the Bismarck/Mandan area, with the coolest
highs in the 50s in our northern tier of counties. High clouds
have continued streaming in, rounding the axis of an upper ridge.
No changes needed with this forecast.

.SHORT TERM...(This Afternoon through Thursday)

Very mild temperatures continue through the short term as winds
increase from west to east on Thursday.

At the upper levels, a broad ridge is currently located over much
of the central CONUS with it's axis near the Montana/North Dakota
border. At the surface, a warm front has moved from central into
eastern North Dakota with an east to west oriented cold front
draped over the southern Canadian Prairies.

This pattern has led to a mostly clear sky across western and
central North Dakota with only a few high clouds floating around
and very mild temperatures. As of this writing, widespread
observations in the mid 50s to mid 60s were noted with a shot for
record high temperatures at Bismarck (66 F in 1939) and Dickinson
(65 F in 1939). Update: we have officially tied the record high of
66 at Bismarck.

The ridge axis will continue to move from west to east across the
state tonight as the next shortwave trough starts to approach and
we transition back into southwest flow aloft. Well above normal
temperatures will then continue tonight with lows actually closer
to our normal highs for this time of year (mid 20s to lower 30s).

The cold front to our north will eventually drop down into western
North Dakota early Thursday and cross the state from west to east
through the day. While highs won't be quite as warm as today, they
will remain well above normal ranging from the mid 40s in the
vicinity of the Turtle Mountains to the mid to upper 50s across
the southwest.

Behind the front, rain chances will return to the west in the
afternoon and gusty west northwest winds will also start to ramp
up given increasing pressure rises, increasing cold air
advection, and steepening low level lapse rates. The strongest
winds Thursday afternoon will likely be across the southwest where
the strongest pressure rises are forecast and gusts up to 45 mph
seem reasonable. A Wind Advisory may be necessary here in the next
shift or two.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday Night through Wednesday)

As a surface low deepens over central North Dakota, significant
impacts are likely across portions of western and central North
Dakota Thursday night into Friday due to accumulating snow, strong
west northwest winds, and blowing snow.

Strong pressure rises, cold air advection, and steep low level
lapse rates will continue to spread across much of western and
central North Dakota through the night on Thursday, slowly
diminishing from west to east through the day on Friday as the low
vacates to the northeast. Thus, strong west northwest winds are
likely to continue Thursday night and through much of the day on
Friday. The NBM suggests high probabilities (~70 percent) of wind
gusts of at least 45 mph across much of western and central North
Dakota. Increasing the threshold, NBM probabilities of 58 mph or
greater max out across the southwest and south central in the 10
to 30 percent range where the strongest pressure rises move
through. Thus, wind headlines will likely be needed in the
Thursday night through Friday time frame but for now we are likely
closer to advisory criteria rather than warning criteria. EFI
values topping out around 0.8 for wind gusts lends confidence to
more of an advisory type event as well.

Rain will gradually turn to snow across the west and into the
central Thursday night with the best chances generally along and
north of the Highway 2 corridor. By the time the bulk of the
precipitation moves out on Friday, we will likely see a
widespread swath of 1 to 3 inches of snowfall across the north.
However, some areas across the northwest and north central could
see some localized totals up to 5 inches. Current NBM
probabilities suggest a high chance of at least an inch of snow
along and north of Highway 2 and a low to medium chance of at
least 4 inches. In between the Interstate 94 corridor and Highway
2, a medium chance of an inch or greater is favored with chances
decreasing moving south.

Blowing snow will also lead to some significant impacts during
this time frame, leading to reduced visibility which could make
travel difficult, especially during falling snow. Our in house
blowing snow model suggests the highest impacts will be across the
northern third of the forecast area where the heavier
accumulations are likely. While winds will be gusty across the
north, the strongest winds are favored across the central and south
so there is a bit of uncertainty about how much snow will be able
to blow after falling snow moves out. Confidence is increasing
that we will need winter weather headlines somewhere across the
northern half of the state in future shifts, but confidence
remains low regarding exactly where that winter/wind headline
cutoff should be. Some wrap around snow will be possible into
Friday night, but precipitation and winds will be on a downward
trend.

For the rest of the long term, we will generally transition back
into mean northwest flow aloft with cooler temperatures (but still
around normal with highs mainly in the upper 20s to the upper
30s). We will see the occasional reading in the lower 40s across
the southwest and the coldest day of the long term should be on
Tuesday with widespread highs in the 20s. A couple weak waves are
forecast to quickly move through in the Sunday/Monday time frame
but thus far any snow chances look low and specific details remain
murky this far out. Looking beyond the long term, above normal
temperatures remain favored with below normal precipitation.

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Thursday Night)

VFR conditions to start the 06Z TAF period, with light winds into
Thursday morning. Did include sct low ceiling at KJMS for patchy fog
potential in the early morning. A cold front will move through the
area on Thursday, with winds shifting to westerly and becoming
strong starting Thursday afternoon. Winds will increase through the
end of the period, becoming sustained around 25 to 30 knots across
the west, with gusts up to 45 knots. Rain will also begin spreading
from west to east terminals after 22Z, eventually transitioning to
snow after the end of the TAF period.
