Area forecast discussion, Apr 2, 11:45 PM MDT, 3 hours 20 minutes before
AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Bismarck ND
1245 AM CDT Mon Apr 3 2023

.UPDATE...
Issued at 1242 AM CDT Mon Apr 3 2023

For late night update have increased snow chances significantly
along the north where snow continues to fall in the wake of a
departing low. Otherwise, a breezy night continues.

UPDATE Issued at 924 PM CDT Sun Apr 2 2023

Light snow continues over much of northern North Dakota,
especially the north central. Still appears to be a little bit of
light rain on the southern peripheries where temperatures remain
above freezing. Increased QPF slightly over the far north central
based on latest model guidance and ongoing snow. Essentially, a
snow increase of a couple to few tenths for some locations
tonight. Also adjusted PoPs again through mid-Monday morning.

UPDATE Issued at 653 PM CDT Sun Apr 2 2023

Light precipitation is currently falling in parts of northern
North Dakota. Generally, precipitation type appears to be snow,
but a little rain may be mixed in as well. Precipitation should
turn to all snow over the next couple hours. Adjusted PoPs over
the next few hours based on the latest radar trends.

&&

.SHORT TERM...(This Evening through Monday)
Issued at 350 PM CDT Sun Apr 2 2023

Breezy winds will give way to periods of light snow during the
short term forecast.

Clipper system will exit the area through tonight. Strong winds
associated with this system will continue to linger across mainly
the southwest through the rest of the afternoon. Advisory level
winds are scattered at this time, yet are widespread enough to
keep the current Wind Advisory through the early evening hours. As
this low pulls away, snow looks to develop on the back side of the
low bringing chances through the night across northern areas. And
although the winds don't look particularly strong they may still
be elevated enough for some patchy blowing snow tonight. Look for
low temperatures to be cooler and generally in the teens and 20s.

Monday the initial clipper moves off yet a broad trough could
still linger some light snow across the north through the day. The
total snowfall from tonight through Monday across the north will
be around 1 to 3 inches, with the higher amounts coming closer to
the Canadian/ND border. Perhaps some impacts to travel will be
found from this snow on Monday, yet confidence is not high enough
for any advisory at this time. Winds don't look too strong for
Monday limiting the blowing snow potential. Cooler temperatures
will accompany this broad trough with highs in the 20s to perhaps
some 30s.

.LONG TERM...(Monday Night through Sunday)
Issued at 350 PM CDT Sun Apr 2 2023

A major winter storm still looks to impact the region through
Wednesday, with widespread blizzard conditions still possible.

Attention remains on the Colorado Low system for the upcoming
week. Snow may start up across the far south as early as Monday
night. There can be areas of fog and drizzle/freezing drizzle
during the start of these systems as well. Looking at this today
the signal for this is not particularly strong, although is
somewhat present Monday night. Something to keep an eye on but not
in the forecast at this time. Widespread snow then forms across
much of the state Tuesday through Tuesday night, with winds also
going on the increase. This initial push of snow Tuesday through
Tuesday night will likely be the period of heaviest snow. So even
though the winds will just be ramping up, heavy snowfall could
still bring periods of greatly reduced visibility. Wednesday is
when the low gets tightly wound and the strongest winds combined
with lingering snow will be found. NBM winds are quite high, with
gusts 60 to 70 MPH for some areas Tuesday night through Wednesday.
This may seem high, however, the 850 mb are over 50 knots and
with strong cold air advection. Further increasing confidence in
these winds are ECMWF EFI values near 1, and a shift of tails at
2. This implies these are some of the strongest model winds in at
least 20 years. So although the snowfall from this storm is within
the realm of these types of systems, the snow combined with very
strong winds could bring blizzard conditions of near historical
portions. This is especially true in the James River Valley where
the strongest winds and highest snow accumulations are currently
forecast. A slight shift north and westward has increase snow
accumulations today, and increased probabilities of 6, 12, and
even 18 inches today. Overall the Winter Storm Watch for Blizzard
Conditions remains valid for all areas in it. Decided to wait at
least one more shift for any upgrades given the track uncertainty
that still remains. Temperatures with this system will be well
below normal with highs in the teens and 20s, and lows in the
single digits to teens. Other than any freezing drizzle potential,
all this precipitation is expected to be snow with this system.

Snow exits the region Wednesday night with winds also diminishing.
Surface high moving over the area combined with fresh snow will
make for cold morning lows Thursday in the single digits. The
exiting high though could bring warm temperatures to the west,
cold continued cold temperatures to anywhere with fresh snowfall.
The rest of the week then looks to see a warming and mainly dry zonal
flow. The warming conditions will greatly depend on snow depth.
Right now this brings highs in the 40s and 50s across the west,
to 30s in the east by the weekend, with lows still below freezing
at night in the teens and 20s. This temperature trend will likely
need monitoring and adjusted based on observed snow depth.
