Key Messages:
- Trends with the upcoming storm continue to suggest a subtle
southward drift with the highest snowfall amounts. At the same
time, a pretty strong signal for snowfall rates of an 1" per
hour across northeast Iowa into southwest and central
Wisconsin. With amounts generally in the 5 to 9 inch range and
potential for high rates, will convert the watch over to a
winter storm warning and add an advisory for Clark County.
- Another system comes in for the weekend into early next week.
Predictability looks to have gone up a bit with a good signal for
some accumulating snow.
Thursday...
The consistent trend with the upcoming signal has been for the
snow to arrive/end sooner and for a southward placement of the
heavier snow band. These trends look to continue with the latest
model guidance, especially now that it is time frame resolved by
the hi- res model suites. There also has been a change to the
orientation of how the snow moves into the area and it now looks
to be more of a southwest to northeast translation into the area
versus an almost due west to east. The strongest isentropic up
glide on the 280K surface looks to occur late in the morning and
should work to help saturate the column. This up glide then looks
to continue through the afternoon around 1 to 2 ubar/s before
increasing during the evening across Wisconsin into the 2 to 4
ubar/s, which corresponds to the time frame that there will be an
overall deepening occurring with the system. This deepening looks
to place as the best pv advection in the 500-300 mb layer moves
across and the region comes under the left exit region of the
upper level jet. It is somewhat concerning that the mid-level
frontogenesis looks to be kind of unimpressive but what signal is
there, does line up along the Iowa/Minnesota border (or a little
to the south) into southwest Wisconsin.
Another concern is with the snow ratios that will be realized
with this system. Some of the soundings suggest the dgz may not be
all that deep, on the order of 100 to 150 mb, but there could be
a deep isothermal layer just below and with any amount of cooling,
could push the sounding more into the dgz. Plan to lower the snow
ratios a little bit but still be in the 10-12 to 1 range in the
heaviest snow areas.
The 08.12Z HREF has a nice signal of 1 inch hourly rates coming
across northeast Iowa during the afternoon that then expands and
increases in probabilities along and east of the Mississippi River
into southwest and central Wisconsin during the late afternoon
and evening. There is also a very small signal for 2 inch rates
for a couple of hours in the evening with a stronger signal
farther to the east. The area of higher rates lines up well with
the highest probabilities of getting 4 inches in the HREF data
with a splotchy 20 to 40 percent signal for 8 inches from far
northeast Iowa into Wisconsin.
Putting this all together for a deterministic forecast, amounts
are generally falling out in the 5 to 9 inches with some locally
higher amounts in the higher terrain. This combined with the
potential impacts from the higher snow rates, will convert the
entire watch over to a warning and add an advisory for Clark
County.
Saturday - Monday...
It appears the predictability may be starting to increase on the
next system that comes in over the weekend into early next week.
Another short wave trough will get ejected out of the trough off
the Pacific Northwest Coast with this one expected to move across
southern Canada and then drop southeast across the Upper
Midwest/Great Lakes region Sunday. Looking at the ensembles, there
are three clusters for this system with good dispersion across
the models sets. The main difference looks to be in the strength
of the wave as it drops across the region. Right now, it looks
like most of the precipitation will occur in the warm air
advection zone ahead of the main system followed by a second round
in the deformation as the system is exiting the region. More
light snow should occur with the probabilities for an inch in the
50 to 90 percent range Saturday night into Sunday and generally
under 20 percent on the back side Sunday night into Monday.
Probabilities decrease into the 20 to 30 percent range for
Saturday night/Sunday for 3 inch amounts with no signal right now
for 6 inches.
