.A storm system spreads from south to north late tonight and
early Thursday morning across northeast Iowa and southwest
Wisconsin. A mixture of snow, rain, and freezing rain may occur
early in the morning before transitioning to all snow by mid-
morning. As temperatures warm in the afternoon, the snow may mix
with rain before coming to an end in the late afternoon. The snow
that falls will be heavy in nature with rates of over 1 inch per
hour at times. This forecast has been fluctuating over the last
24 hours and may continue to shift slightly overnight, so it is
advised to pay close attention to the forecast.

...Heavy Snow Thursday For Northeast IA, southwest WI...

.A winter storm will push rain to a wintry mix across parts of 
northeast Iowa and southwest Wisconsin overnight, transitioning to
all snow early Thursday morning. Heavy wet snow will then fall 
for most of the morning hours, shifting east northeast in the 
afternoon. 

The storm has slowed up a bit, and shifted more southeast in it's
track...and thus the heavy snow band has shifted more southeast
too. The higher amounts and impacts will still be confined to
northeast Iowa and southwest Wisconsin.

.It continues to look like the the winter storm will track further
southeast than originally expected today. Due to this, there was 
a reduction in the snow totals for much of the area. The Snow 
Advisory was cancelled for Adams, Juneau, and Vernon counties in 
southwest and central Wisconsin, and Allamakee and Fayette 
counties in northeast Iowa. The Winter Storm Warning was 
downgraded to Winter Weather Advisory in Clayton County in 
northeast Iowa. Grant County remains in the Winter Storm Warning

Heavy snow has been fast to accumulate in southern parts of Grant
County with reports of greater than 1 inch per hour snowfall
rates. With precipitation onset type of rain, slushy, slippery
roads have also been reported. Low level dry air entrained from
the northeast has limited northerly impacts of precipitation.
Forcing and increased snowfall rates expected to slowly pivot

While the heaviest, quickest accumulating snowfall has departed
east of advisories and warnings, light to moderate snow continues
to create slippery to hazardous conditions. A small area of above
freezing surface temperatures shifting southeast towards these 
headlines will result in a mix of rain, furthering snow weights. 
Amounts this morning have demonstrated the sharp cutoff with over 
5 inches in Platteville, WI to T inches in Boscobel, WI. Light to
moderate snowfall expected to continue east through the 
afternoon into the early evening.

Key Messages:

 - Recent trends favoring a shift in storm track tonight into
   Thursday have resulted in lower confidence in exactly where the
   anticipated band of heaviest snow will be situated and how much
   is to be expected.

 - Locally, northeast Iowa and southwest Wisconsin still stand the
   greatest chance of seeing several inches of heavy, wet snow.

 - Winter Storm Watch continues for now, with forthcoming headline
   changes to an advisory or warning likely later this morning.

A challenging winter system and snow forecast on tap for later
tonight into Thursday. A pronounced wave is evident on water vapor
imagery crossing into the Southern Plains early this morning. This
negatively tilted system will evolve into a rapidly strengthening
surface low as it pivots northward today and lifts into the Great
Lakes region by Thursday morning. Meanwhile the developing warm
conveyor belt will pump a moisture surge of 250-300% normal
precipitable water up from the Gulf into eastern Iowa and southern
Wisconsin. Strong upper divergence and jet dynamics will provide
favorable synoptic lift. However, the biggest precipitation driver
locally will be a strong band of 750-600mb frontogenesis producing a
period of robust lift from northeast Iowa into southwest Wisconsin
from late tonight into Thursday morning.

The biggest forecast challenge with this system revolves around the
storm track still trending a bit further south/east, with a
resultant shift in the band of heaviest snowfall. Recent ensemble
and deterministic runs have all shown this trend since this time
last night. For instance, the mean EPS 24-hour snowfall for this
event at KLSE was 5.8 inches with the 07.00Z run, but now with the
08.00Z run it's down to 2.2 inches. This unfortunately lends to
lower than desired confidence at this junction with snow onset just
about 24 hours away. For our area, confidence is still highest in
northeast Iowa and far southwest Wisconsin seeing the highest
potential for 3 to 6+ inches of snow, but need to see if that's
still the case by later this morning as new guidance grapples with
locking onto the uncertain storm track.

Given the lingering 11th hour uncertainty, have decided along with
neighboring offices to let the day shift evaluate trends as new
short-term guidance becomes available and determine how to proceed
with the existing Winter Storm Watch later this morning. This
morning's updated forecast obviously brought storm total snowfall
down substantially from yesterday due to the southward shift. Latest
trends suggest an advisory might suffice for roughly the
southeastern half of our forecast area, but still can't rule out the
need for a warning perhaps for a few counties in our far
southeast depending on where the band of heavy snow sets up. Only
headline change this morning is to remove Jackson County from the
watch given the lower totals that far north. Do anticipate a
tight gradient/cutoff in snow amounts on the northern edge, which
will likely become more defined as additional high-res data gets
ingested later this morning.

Where snow falls, it is expected to be the wet and heavy variety
with high liquid water content. Snow rates could approach 1 inch per
hour for a time over portions of northeast Iowa and southwest
Wisconsin Thursday morning between 6AM and noon. The good news is
temperatures around 30 to 35 will be very favorable for effective
road treatments. Could be a brief window of sleet around
precipitation onset time in our south before daybreak, but
otherwise this looks primarily like a snow event with some rain
mixing in at times where temperatures warm sufficiently. Morning
commute will be impacted for some, and expect reduced visibility
where snow falls heaviest. Could be some lingering afternoon
commute impacts for some. Due to the very wet nature of the snow
and winds now not quite as strong due to the system's southward
shift, not expecting significant blowing/drifting snow impacts.

A secondary upper wave will drop in on the heels of this departing
system Thursday afternoon/evening, bringing an additional 1/2 to 1
inch of snow to much of the area before finally ending overnight.

Pretty quiet thereafter into the weekend with the next precip
chances not until the middle of next week.

With the continued southward trend of the upcoming winter storm,
it now appears that the precipitation will stay south of both
airports. This will lead to VFR conditions expected to continue
until the winds swing around to the north as the area of low
pressure moves past the region. There has been a signal for the
development of MVFR ceilings associated with this wind shift and
that these lower ceilings may get into KRST by mid-morning.
