- Overall, the forecast has not changed much for the upcoming
winter storm. Still have high probabilities of a 6 to 8 inch
band for much of the area. Slightly lower amounts across the
south where a period of a wintry mix is possible. Will convert
the watch over to warnings and advisories.
Tonight-Thursday...
Water vapor satellite early this morning shows the upcoming storm
taking shape over the Central Rockies. This system is expected to
slowly deepen into tonight as it moves across Kansas and northern
Missouri and then remain strong as it tracks toward the lower
Great Lakes Thursday. The area of surface low pressure looks to be
nearly stacked underneath the upper level low, which should allow
plenty of forcing to impact the area. Short wave troughs rotating
around the upper level low will produce at least a a couple of
periods of moderate to strong pv advection in the 500-300 mb layer
tonight. The RAP would suggest the initial round of pv advection
will come in this evening and mainly be across the southern half
of the area with the next round overnight across the southeast
sections.
Probably of more importance in terms of precipitation production
across the area will the frontogenesis and isentropic up glide
that will occur on the north side of the surface low. The RAP is
not super excited about the frontogenesis as it brings in a
moderate mid- level band in the 500-700 mb layer this evening but
then weakens this along with showing it becoming somewhat
disorganized. The 18.00Z NAM is fairly similar, especially with
the initial strength and subsequent weakening but does become as
disorganized and keeps and organized, but weak, band lifting
quickly north tonight. The most impressive forcing looks to occur
on the 290K isentropic surface where 6 to 8 ubar/s of up glide
spreads in this evening and then looks to only move slowly to the
north overnight. The RAP would suggest that a trowal forms on this
level over the area this evening also only lifts slowly north
overnight. The nose of the moisture transport on this level is
focused into the area this evening before sliding off to the east
after 06Z.
Trying to put this altogether, believe there will be more than
enough forcing to produce precipitation tonight into Thursday
morning. For the most part, this should be all snow. The exception
to this may be across the southern sections where forecast
sounding from both the RAP and NAM suggest there may be a 2 to 4
hour window late this evening into the early overnight where ice
aloft is loss in the clouds which would allow for some freezing
drizzle/rain to occur. Already have some light ice accumulations
in the forecast and can't argue with those.
As for snow amounts, the 18.00Z HREF shows a nice band of 6 to 8
inches for almost all of the area outside of where the small
amount of icing may occur. Outside of few isolated reports, would
not expect much more than 8 inches as there is almost no signal in
the 12 hour probabilities of 8 inches or more. More concerning
though is the 6 inch probabilities from the 17.12Z GEFS and EPS.
Most of these suggest only up to about a 50 percent chance of
reaching 6 inches with the GEFS having this all west of the
Mississippi River. The caveat, however, is that these use a
default 10 to 1 snow ratio which for this event looks to be too
low as it will be closer to our climatological normal of 12-13 to
1. After adjusting the precipitation amounts and snow ratios for
the latest data a band of 6 to 8 inches still looks probable for
all but a few counties in the south where the wintry mix occurs.
Based on this, will convert the watch over to warnings and
advisories for tonight through Thursday morning.

IFR/MVFR conditions are expected to continue overnight. Wednesday
morning, KRST ceilings going lower to LIFR as northwest 7 to 14 kts
winds become northeast and decrease to 5 to 10kts. Some breaks in
the overcast could occur at KLSE Wednesday morning, but fill in
again during the afternoon. During the late afternoon, we'll also
start to see increasing mid level moisture transport from the
south with precipitation advancing northward across Iowa.
Wednesday night, frontogenesis increases from the south with the
advancing storm system from the Plains. After overcoming some dry
air, saturation occurs with snow around 03-04Z becoming heavy
05-06Z with MVFR/IFR visibilities dropping to LIFR.
