HIGH IMPACT WEATHER POTENTIAL...Minimal till late Friday night/early
Saturday morning...
PATTERN SYNOPSIS/FORECAST:
Confluence zone aloft over the Upper Great Lakes this morning...with
exiting system over Quebec...and broader troughing continuing to
chug eastward into the Southern/Central Plains...with anomalous
ridging over the SE US. 160+kt upper level jet more or less overhead
attm...with a few niblets in the flow over WI...and some elongated
vorticity stretching zonally just to our north. NW-SE
oriented BCZ still to our south, where the bulk of the moisture is
located...though some higher clouds are sneaking as far northward as
central lower/M-55 as of 5z.
Abundance of subsidence/dry air in the region supporting surface
high pressure and clear skies for Northern Michigan...which is both
fortunate and unfortunate for the spectacular northern lights show
thus far tonight (fortunate because we can see it...unfortunate
because we still have work to do....). A few lower clouds still
trying to hang on over Lake Superior into Eastern Upper...likely
related to a bit of marine boundary layer influence up that way,
given weak northwesterly flow with good fetch...though this has been
waning with time as flow continues to veer more north/northeasterly
tonight. Aforementioned higher clouds sneaking into southern Lower
Michigan likely related to northward motion of the upper level jet
shifting the better dynamics northward with time...as fgen lingers
in the vicinity of the state line...bulk of which is well south/west
over the Mid MS Valley into the OH Valley where better SW flow and
resultant thermal advection are located.
Going forward...anticipate the vort max beneath the confluence zone
will drift through northern Michigan today...as a vort max well to
our southwest begins to lift northeastward toward the region...with
surface cyclogenesis to accompany it. Deeper moisture and better
forcing to spread into the region toward daybreak as the system
approaches...though there is still a touch of uncertainty in the
exact track attm.
PRIMARY FORECAST CONCERNS:
Overnight yet...bit of land breeze already taking shape at MBL as of
5z and suspect there could be some fog there, if the high clouds are
able to stay out long enough. Another concern for fog overnight may
be PLN, which is much clearer and is also cooling off pretty quick.
Suspect the land breeze will not be enough to keep the remnants of
that marine stratus/strato-cu layer from drifting south with the
prevailing winds off northern Lake Huron...as we've already seen at
PZQ.
High pressure in the area should keep things relatively pleasant
through most of the day today...with perhaps just some diurnal
cu/stratocu across parts of the area. That being said...do think
some areas will have to contend with this high-cloud deck from the
BCZ to our south...though it looks as though most of this may remain
along/south of maybe MBL/FKS to maybe APN. It appears the
confluence/weak vort max slipping across the area should keep most
activity suppressed southward till later this
afternoon/tonight...when the BCZ should begin to shift back
northward, and this time, closer to our area...with a much stronger
push of energy in the form of that vort max lifting northeastward
along the flow.
Attm...appears best upper-level synoptic forcing doesn't begin to
arrive till late tonight...perhaps 9-12z...moving in from southwest
to northeast as that niblet approaches the region. For now...looks
as though better forcing may hold off till just after 12z
Saturday...as the system draws closer to the region. Despite
temperatures likely to make it into the 40s for most areas during
the day...still have concerns it may be dry enough across northern
Michigan initially that evaporative cooling as the atmosphere
saturates could keep precip types a little more frozen. That being
said...some guidance derived soundings suggest there could be a
period where the low-levels saturate enough to get some freezing
drizzle overnight...though this may be short-lived as we get some
seeder-feeder processes from aloft. Additionally...still have
concerns that the drier low-levels may keep things from moving in as
quickly as we currently expect...and have attempted to trend pops
slightly that way...at least, early in the night. Do see signals
that suggest that once things get started, it will be off to the
races, so to speak. But this may hold off till just after this
period (see short term discussion below).
Winds will also be on the increase pretty dramatically and quickly
during the night...as the surface low intensifies to our southwest.
Anticipate east to northeast winds will ramp up to around 15-20+kts,
gusting in excess of 30kts by Saturday morning. This will only serve
to exacerbate any issues caused by any ongoing precipitation, though
the bulk of impacts again look to remain just beyond 12z Saturday.

.SHORT TERM...(Saturday through Sunday)

High Impact Weather Potential: Impactful late-season winter storm
likely Saturday into Saturday evening including wet/heavy snow
accumulations and gusty winds.
Pattern Forecast: All focus through the short term forecast period
directed at the Saturday through Saturday night time frame. Strong
mid-upper level energy is expected to eject the four-corners region
into the southern Plains today. Meanwhile, strong southeast CONUS
centered sub-tropical ridge will deflect this wave north toward the
southern Great Lakes by this evening into tonight. Attendant surface
cyclogenesis will be underway during this same time frame with ~990
mb low pressure expected to trek from near the mid-MS valley tonight
to near northwest IN by 12z Saturday. 24/00z suite of ensemble
guidance has begun to come into better agreement with the general
consensus and one that simple pattern recognition supports being
potent low pressure tracking further northeast on Saturday crossing
near Saginaw Bay/the thumb during the day Saturday before quickly
ejecting into central Quebec by 12z Sunday. Broad cyclonic low-level
flow continues locally on Sunday on the backside of this system
while higher surface pressure gradually encroaches on the region
from the west.
Primary Forecast Concerns: Wet/dense snow amounts, gusty winds and
related impacts Saturday through Saturday evening.
By the start of the forecast period early Saturday morning,
anticipate that wintry weather will be spreading north across the
southern reaches of the forecast area...mainly along/south of M-72.
Initial precip type down that way expected to be primarily snow as
evaporational cooling should largely cool the column and erode any
semblance of a H8-centered warm nose. That said, suppose there's a
non-zero chance that cooling takes slightly longer than anticipated
and allows for a bit of sleet/freezing rain to mix in at the onset
near the M-55 corridor.
Precipitation coverage expands north through Saturday morning...
pretty much encompassing all of northern lower by noon/16z. Primarily
snow expected across the current winter storm watch area with the
potential for more a wintry mix to prevail across far northeast
lower/near Saginaw Bay. The latter of these locations is where the
highest uncertainty prevails -- not only with respect to
precipitation type(s), but also resultant amounts and impacts.
Current confidence supported by hi-res guidance derived soundings is
that a wintry mix of snow and sleet prevails across that area, with
potential for freezing rain/plain rain (sfc temp dependent) as well,
especially closer to Saginaw Bay. Primary issue is how heavily
precipitation falls in those areas as any periods of steadier/
heavier precip would likely result in more efficient evaporational
cooling...bringing more snow than a mix. That said, current plan is
to leave that handful of counties out of the winter storm watch with
a general 1-4" of wet/sloppy mess.
For the winter storm watch area, primarily wet/dense snow is
expected...falling locally heavy at times with 1"+/hr snowfall rates
expected at times. SLRs generally ranging from 8-11:1 will prove to
be a concrete-mixer type snow. A widespread 6-10" of snow expected
across this area with locally higher amounts not entirely out of the
question where the strongest embedded low-mid level fgen banding
sets up within larger scale deformation. While certainly subject to
change over the next 24 hours, current confidence places that
corridor from near TVC to PZQ. We seemingly ask ourselves every year
during these late season events just how much accumulation will be
realized on roadways given a late March sun angle and temperatures
in the low 30s during falling snow, and it's almost always dependent
on snowfall intensity. Given snow expected to fall moderate to
locally heavy as was alluded to above, expecting significant travel
impacts with greasy/snow-covered roads combined with significantly
reduced visibility and gusty winds, although widespread/significant
blowing/drifting may be mitigated some by low SLRs.
Another tough call on the northern periphery of this system with
respect to just how far north and west steadier snow makes it, and
whether that sets up across eastern upper Michigan or farther west
is uncertain. Where that does occur, a sharp snowfall gradient is
expected ranging from zero to a few inches of snow over a short
distance.
Steady synoptic snow is expected to rather quickly depart from west
to east Saturday evening...likely exiting the entirety of the
forecast by midnight or so. Broad cyclonic flow remains in its wake
through Sunday with some west-northwest flow gustiness continuing.
Any lake induced snow shower activity beyond this system should be
minimal at best given sub-optimal delta Ts and a loss of synoptic
moisture. Suppose some flurries and lake induced clouds can't be
ruled out Sunday, but by and large, increasing sunshine should be
the rule with temperatures climbing back into the mid-30s to low
40s.

High Impact Weather Potential: Minimal for now.
Latest long-range trends suggest less impactful weather returns in
large part through the forecast period. That said, worth watching
the Tuesday night and/or Wednesday time frame for rain/snow shower
potential. Temperatures look to largely return to near-normal for
much of the period with highs ranging from the upper 30s to mid-40s
for most. Beyond the long term forecast period, interesting to note
ensemble guidance beginning to latch on to another potential storm
system across the nation's midsection very late next week/early the
following weekend. Certainly way out there, but may bear watching
down the road.

retreats. Clouds should will be lowering and thickening through
