Ongoing light lake effect snow will continue into this evening
across the typical northwest lake effect snow belts. Around 1" or
less of additional accumulation is anticipated, and thus will allow
the ongoing Winter Weather Advisory to expire at 1 PM EST. Forecast
snowfall totals for tonight into Wednesday morning have been refined
with increasing confidence in the location of an expected
frontogenetic band that is set to drape across the lower peninsula.
Snowfall totals of 1-2" are expected for most areas along and south
of M-32. It should be noted that locally higher amounts near 4" will
be possible across areas where this band focuses for a longer period
of time. However, low confidence in potential/location for this
precludes any winter weather headlines tonight into Wednesday. Will
keep ongoing Winter Storm Watch for northern lower Michigan going
with potential changes in headlines to come with the afternoon
forecast issuance.

.NEAR TERM...(Today through Tonight)

High Impact Weather Potential: Accumulating snow this morning, and
again tonight.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast:

Much heralded transition to a very active weather regime unfolding
across the northern Great Lakes...kicked off by energetic "Alberta
Clipper" type system racing east into the area early this morning.
Band of warm air advection driven snow spreading through the area,
with some brief heavier snowfall rates...especially north of the big
bridge. Looking much further upstream, dual well organized shortwave
troughs working into the west coast of central NOAM, one diving
southeast across the west coast of British Columbia, with the second
spinning east off the coast of Baja California. While initial
clipper system and attendant snows will exit east today, north
expansion of southeast Conus ridge axis from those dual upstream
waves will help entice a nice frontogenetical response tonight...
bringing another round of accumulating snow to at least parts of the
area in the process. Eventually ejection of those western waves will
likely bring a high impact winter weather event to our area later
Wednesday into Thursday. Busy times ahead indeed.

Primary Forecast Concerns/Challenges:

Snow evolution, amounts, and headline management concerns through
tonight (and beyond).

Details:

Clipper system does what its name implies...racing off to our east
this morning. Synoptic snow will end as it does so, with a brief
shot of lake-driven snows following in northwest flow regimes.
Parameters are far from ideal as synoptic contributions are quickly
lost. Still, would expect another inch or two of new snow,
especially in the famed snow belts of northwest lower Michigan.
Gusty winds will compound the hazardous driving, producing blowing
and drifting snow. Perhaps a few lingering light lake-driven snow
showers this afternoon, but with minimal additional accumulations.
Tricky forecast heading through the overnight as next band of
accumulating snow arrives. Strong low level jet response expected to
our west, rapidly tightening the thermal gradient back across
Wisconsin and southern Minnesota. Simple pattern recognition
supports an excellent frontogenetical response along and to the
north of the nose of this jet. Some discrepancy in what height fgen
response will be most organized, with some of the higher res
convective allowing guidance supporting a much more elevated (and
hence further north) response. However, mass convergence on nose of
that jet should be impressive, supporting better fgen within a bit
lower levels of the atmosphere. This will focus better snows
spreading into areas south of M-68 overnight, with another couple
inches possible. Of course, there are often surprises when dealing
with such focused forcing, so definitely wouldn't be surprised to
see slight shifts to this main snow axis and locally heavier snow
totals (especially given deep omega noted on guidance-derived
soundings).

.SHORT TERM...(Wednesday through Thursday)

High Impact Weather Potential: Strong winter storm likely for
all of northern Michigan with accumulating snow and blowing snow.

Forecast period begins with a low pressure system over Kansas moving
northeastward toward the southern Great Lakes region. Models have
moved this farther north than previous runs, which will bring
different vertical temperature profiles. The new forecast soundings
show sleet and possibly even freezing rain at times from about the M-
32 cooridor and south for much of Wednesday afternoon through
Thursday afternoon. This could drastically reduce previous snow
amount forecasts. There will be a tight transitional zone where 8-
12"+ of snow will have fallen by Thursday evening north of this
transitional zone and south will be a wintry mix mess of snow,
sleet, and freezing rain. There will also be times that 850mb
temperatures are cold enough to produce some lake enhanced snows
over portions of northeast lower...this is why the highest totals
are over that area at this time with northeasterly winds. The
majority of CIPS analogs also agree with the highest 72hr COOP
snowfall of 8-12+ inches being north of the M-72 corridor and into
the eastern upper peninsula...raising confidence levels that the
forecast is shifting in the right direction. As currently stated,
there will be locally higher amounts with lake enhancement across
portions of northeast lower. The heaviest snow and mixed
precipitation will be Wednesday evening through Thursday morning.

Northeast winds will be strong with gusts up to 40-45mph possible
during the heaviest snowfall rates. This will produce greatly
reduced visibilities in blowing and drifting snow. Winds finally
begin to diminish late Thursday afternoon and through the evening
hours. Winds will also begin backing during the end of this
forecast period.

High temperatures Wednesday will be in the in the mid 20s to low 30s
before cold air filters in for Thursday. High temperatures Thursday
will be in the low teens across eastern upper and range from the
upper teens across the tip of the mitt to the low 30s over the
southernmost forecast area. Wind chills Thursday morning will be
near zero to the negative teens.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Monday)

High Impact Weather Potential: Accumulating snow may still be
ongoing Thursday night into early Friday morning.

Lingering moisture on the backside of the aforementioned low
pressure system in the previous forecast discussion may still
produce some lake effect snow across portions of northwest lower
and eastern upper as delta T/s of 14 to 18C still reside overhead.
Snow will diminish through the morning hours Friday as this system
continues to push towards the New England area with high pressure
and drier air building in from the northern Great Plains. Long range
models then have another storm system moving in to the forecast area
during the beginning of the next work week, with rain mixing with
snow or completely changing over to rain during the afternoon hours.
Confidence level is very low at this time this far out, will have to
continue to monitor this system with each model run and make any
necessary changes.

Temperatures will be cold again Friday with daytime temperatures
only reaching into the teens with wind chills dropping into the
teens below zero for most during the morning hours, while
portions of eastern upper may see some locations drop to -25F. Even
the daytime hours will only reach to the single digits above zero
wind chills. Southerly flow will bring warmer temperatures for the
weekend and into the next work week, with temperatures in the 30s
each day.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Wednesday afternoon)

Mainly MVFR CIGs are expected this afternoon and evening as lake
effect snow showers continue across the typical northwest snowbelts
into tonight. Wind speeds will greatly decrease overnight and switch
from northwest to easterly on Wednesday. A round of snow is expected
later this evening into Wednesday morning, mainly across the
northern lower peninsula and impacting the MBL and TVC TAF sites.
VSBY drops to 1SM are expected, and drops to 1/2SM or less will be
possible within the heaviest snowfall at times after midnight.
Accumulations around 2 inches are expected at MBL and TVC by
Wednesday morning. Snowfall intensity is expected to diminish some
Wednesday morning before picking back up towards the end of the
period.

Winds will gradually swing around to a northwest direction today,
remaining very gusty in the process. All gale warnings and
advisories will continue. Nice break in the winds tonight, with east
to northeast winds becoming quite gusty as we head through Wednesday

into Thursday. Trends again support another widespread gale event
during this period.
