High Impact Weather Potential: Freezing rain may lead to ice
accumulations and hazardous travel across portions of northern lower
Michigan.

Pattern Synopsis:

Shortwave troughing evident on water vapor imagery over the southern
Great Lakes will continue to slide over New England today as ridging
moves overhead, providing subsidence aloft to build surface high
pressure across much of the CONUS east of the Mississippi River by
this evening. A second shortwave will punch into the Great Lakes
late tonight into Tuesday as aforementioned ridging departs to the
east. This wave will provide ample DCVA aloft to continue deepening
a cyclone tracking across Hudson Bay with an attendant cold front
draped well to its south, looking to swing across Lake Michigan by
the end of the period.

Forecast Details:

Quiet weather is expected for the majority of the near term with
high pressure overhead. Lake-induced cloud cover over northern
Michigan is expected to scatter out later this morning or even early
this afternoon as winds become southerly ahead of the approaching
system. Ridging aloft continues to bring dry mid-level air into the
region as was well evidenced by our 00Z sounding. Low-level warm
advection should aid in drying out meager moisture near the surface
initially as the wind shift cuts off the lakes from providing
moisture to the profile, bringing at least partial sunshine to
northern Michigan this afternoon and early this evening.

Otherwise, precip chances will return to the area later this evening
into Tuesday along and ahead of the advancing front. Strong
south/southwesterly flow will provide warm/moist advection today
into tonight. While initial precip falling in the mid levels will
encounter a hostile environment to start, moistening of the column
is anticipated over a period of a few hours and will allow precip to
reach the ground shortly after midnight across areas near the Lake
Michigan shoreline.

The primary concern at this time will be p-type overnight. All snow
is expected for most of the night across the eastern U.P. with a
transition to rain possible early Tuesday morning. A few inches of
snow will be possible with little to no sleet/freezing rain
anticipated north of the bridge. Forecast soundings display a much
more favorable environment for potential freezing rain for a period
of several hours across the northern lower peninsula late
tonight/early Tuesday morning. Strong warm advection aloft will warm
the mid-level inversion above freezing in conjunction with surface
temperatures within a few degrees of freezing. While precip amounts
around 0.10" or less are anticipated across northern lower, the
relatively light nature of this precip would only aid potential for
freezing on surfaces overnight. Strong winds with gusts of 25-40 mph
will also help to efficiently coat surfaces should precip fall as
freezing rain. Unpaved/secondary roads that still have snow cover
will be of particular concern Tuesday morning as any freezing rain
would efficiently coat these surfaces on contact. Higher confidence
in freezing rain potential precludes the issuance of winter weather
advisories at this time, but the potential for ice accumulations
will be closely monitored today as hazardous travel will certainly
possible across many areas Tuesday morning for the morning commute.

High Impact Weather Potential: Icy Early Tuesday

Synopsis/Forecast: A wavy progressive pattern dominates the pattern
across the CONUS through much of the week. One wave quickly moves
straight east through the northern tier of the U.S. and southern
Canada...the associated strengthening system will pass through
Hudson Bay, dragging a cold front through Michigan early Tuesday.
This is expected to bring a mix bag of precipitation types. This
will be followed by a quieter day on Wednesday before the next
system arrives out of the southwest Thursday.

Forecast Details: Tuesday morning we'll still have southerly flow
out ahead of the cold front, with the trailing end of a strong 850mb
jet (50-60kt) starting to push into Lake Huron. A weak warm front is
also progged to be moving through downstate through Tuesday morning,
and to its north the best WAA/isentropic lift will have already
begun shifting to the east of us, residing over Huron. Better
synoptic mid-level moisture strips out to the east, but enough low
level moisture should reside to give us a drizzle/freezing drizzle
mix for much of the area south of the bridge. Areas in NE lower may
hang on to sub-freezing temperatures the longest before low level
temperatures warm above freezing. In Ern Upper guidance is
suggesting more of a light snow to mix in with or dominate the
drizzle (depending on whether we can remain saturated enough for ice
to remain. The warm low levels will be short lived however, as
colder air moves in behind the front later in the morning and into
the afternoon. This will switch things back over to freezing
drizzle/flurry? mix through the afternoon before the drying column
shuts precip down for most of the area late afternoon/evening,
except for a slight chance near Whitefish Bay of light lake effect.

Otherwise QPF looks to be minimal through the day, leading to only a
glaze of additional ice on top of what fell before sunrise. Any
untreated surfaces and roads will likely remain slick/hazardous
through the morning. Brief window of temperatures climbing to the
mid and upper 30s before colder air moves back in.

Heading through mid-week a southwestern wave takes on a negative
tilt as it lifts toward the Great Lakes early Thursday. This will
induce a strengthening surface low that forms in the mid-Mississippi
Valley Wednesday night and moves into southern Michigan through
Thursday (more in long term section). Locally we'll stay dry with
quite a bit of sun Wednesday as high temperatures top out in the mid
30's north and upper 30's south (with a few areas possibly reaching
40 degrees). High level clouds move in from the south in the late
afternoon/evening and continue to thicken and lower overnight head
of the next system.

High Impact Weather Potential: Watching Thursday system

The Thursday system will have a great moisture connection (albeit
only breifly over the upper Great Lakes) coinciding with abnormally
high moisture across us, with PWATs rising to 1-2 St. Dev above
normal for early February from Wednesday night through Thursday.
This system looks like it could bring another round of messy wintry
mix as warmer air flows up and over cold air in place over us,
eventually changing over to snow later in the day Thursday. Guidance
really doens't have a good handle on the track and intensity of the
surface low at this point however, so confidence in precipitation
timing, type and amount is low. Another wave shoots up the Ohio
Valley Friday, with its surface low scraping by to our
south...bringing more snow chances into and through Friday. This
looks to be followed by a quieter weekend.

Widespread MVFR producing low clouds a bit slower to mix out than
originally anticipated. Now think it may take a good portion of
the morning before these low clouds mix out. Still think the
afternoon hours will feature VFR conditions, which should continue
into this evening. Expect low level wind shear to develop later
this evening across much of the area.
