FORECAST UPDATE...Expect this shortwave to slip through the area
tonight...with brief ridging anticipated for Monday...ahead of a
more potent vort max sliding out of the Plains during the daylight
hours along the lingering BCZ from tonight's system. Brief ridge
axis sliding in tonight should aid in CAA over the region, with
delta Ts cold enough for overlake instability..and post frontal low-
level moisture should aid in lake effect snow chances, though
nothing impressive by any means. It should also aid in diminishing
low-level flow over the region tonight, which should also keep lake
effect chances pretty small... I wouldn't be entirely surprised if
we ended up with some kind of land breeze development and resultant
nonsense, but for now will hold off on putting this in the forecast.
A little bit of flurry activity has kicked up here at the office as
of about 2z...likely aided by terrain-induced uplift just ahead of
the front. Expect lingering lake effect overnight will largely be
snow once temps are cold enough/wet-bulb temps are cold enough
toward midnight or so.

Do have concerns that some areas across the EUP could get chilly
toward morning as there is some potential for drainage flow as winds
go light toward morning...and have lowered low temps a smidgen to
account for this idea, though I do not plan to go much colder than
this for now given some uncertainty in whether or not these areas
will clear out enough for temps to totally tank. Wouldn't be
surprised if a few spots in the EUP came in in the single digits in
the morning though.

UPDATE Issued at 808 PM EST Sun Feb 19 2023

Elongated vort max stretching from Hudson Bay to the southern
Plains...to an anomalous upper low slowly meandering toward Baja
California...as somewhat anomalous ridge holds fast over the SE US.
A stronger ridge in the Gulf of AK...with 140+kt largely northerly
flow aloft into the W. US. Niblet diving down through Alberta
spinning up a mid-level wave as well. Looking at a pretty decent SW-
ly upper level jet across the center of the country ahead of the
troughing, too...around 140+kt...along the BCZ there.

Closer to home...midlevel wave continues to meander eastward out of
Michigan...as a couple SW-NE oriented surface cold fronts associated
with that troughing to our west approach the region as of
22z...though bulk of the moisture with this is to our north...as we
sit in the warm sector of the system. Even so...just enough moisture
and forcing, particularly in the lower levels, to get some snow
across the EUP this evening...with a pretty dramatic shift in winds
and temperatures behind these fronts.

Primary Forecast Concerns...Extent of pops tonight.

Efficient mixing of stronger winds aloft made for a pretty windy
afternoon out there. The gusty winds should carry into the evening
with a downward trend expected after that for the most part
(likely still a bit gusty overnight along the Lake Michigan
shoreline). Meanwhile, upstream cold front moves into and across
the region later this evening. Colder air will steadily advect in
behind the front late tonight. So far there has been little to no
precipitation out ahead of the front. Guidance has backed off in
that regard so have scaled back pops to slight/low chances for a
few rain or snow showers. Over lake instability increases
overnight with the flow settling into the northwest. It should be
cold enough to produce a few lake effect snow showers very late
tonight but moisture is lacking so do not expect any appreciable
accumulation. Lows tonight ranging from the mid teens north to the
mid 20s south.

.SHORT TERM...(Monday through Wednesday)

High Impact Weather Potential: Multiple rounds of accumulating snow
through the middle of this week.

Pattern Synopsis:

Longwave troughing will encompass much of the northeast CONUS
through the beginning of the week with upper-level ridging centered
over the Pacific Ocean. A shortwave embedded in the main flow will
dig across the Midwest and over the southern Great Lakes Monday
night into Tuesday. Favorable divergence aloft provided by this
feature will drive a clipper system that looks to track across the
northern Great Lakes during the same timeframe. Behind this system,
a strong trough looks to dig along the Pacific coast heading into
Wednesday, picking a closed upper low back up into the main flow and
ejecting over the southern Great Plains by the end of the period.
Combined forcing aloft will help generate a spatially large
cyclone/surface pressure response stretching from the Plains all the
way into the Great Lakes along a stalled front left over from the
aforementioned clipper system earlier in the week.

Forecast/Details:

An active stretch of winter weather is in store for northern
Michigan this week. Snow chances return to the area Monday evening
as the clipper system encroaches from the west. Weak northwest winds
Monday morning will quickly turn southerly amidst surface pressure
falls and strengthening pressure gradient, resulting in WAA across
much of the state. This will help drive a shield of snow along/ahead
of the advancing front Monday evening into Monday night. The
steadiest snow associated with the system itself is expected to be
across the eastern U.P. and Tip of the Mitt. Lake effect snow across
the typical northwest snowbelts is expected to follow the system
late Monday night into Tuesday morning and even early Tuesday
afternoon. Falling snow combined with strong wind gusts of 30-45 mph
Monday night into Tuesday may lead to visibility reductions,
especially across more open areas, as well as blowing and drifting
snow concerns. By Tuesday morning, snowfall totals of 2-5" will be
possible across the eastern U.P. and lake effect areas east of Grand
Traverse Bay with locally higher amounts possible. Totals around 2"
or less are expected elsewhere, especially for those near Saginaw
Bay where less than 1" is likely.

Focus will then shift to late Tuesday night and Wednesday when our
next accumulating snow chances arrive. Strong WAA/frontogenetic
forcing out ahead of the aforementioned large system in the Plains
is expected to drive snowfall across much of the lower peninsula
through the end of the period. Forecast soundings display a
favorable environment for efficient snowflake growth with a
saturated isothermal layer evident near or just outside the DGZ.
While QPF is not impressive due to the best forcing associated with
the system still being displaced from the Great Lakes, current
confidence is that a few to even several inches of snow is possible
by Wednesday evening across much of the area south of the bridge
with relatively high SLRs. Increasing winds through the day on
Wednesday may lead to additional blowing/drifting snow concerns,
visibility reductions, and hazardous travel during the evening
commute.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday night through Sunday)

High Impact Weather Potential: Accumulating snow chances continue
through Thursday.

While accumulating snow chances will begin in the short term, the
main focus for winter weather impacts with a strong mid-week system
are expected Wednesday night through Thursday. A weakening shortwave
embedded in the main flow will lift across the southern Great Lakes
Wednesday night as a stronger wave/jet max punches over the region
Thursday. Strong WAA will continue to spread northward and intensify
the associated frontogenetic response aloft and north of the surface
front draped across southern Michigan. While more precise timing and
location of worst expected impacts are still uncertain, confidence
continues to increase in northern Michigan experiencing impactful
winter weather -- including the potential for winter storm warning
criteria snowfall totals -- in the Wednesday night - Thursday night
timeframe. Details should become more clear over the following days.
Otherwise, high pressure looks to build into the Great Lakes to
close out the week before a potential clipper passes to our north
over the weekend. Colder temperatures with highs in the teens and
low 20s and overnight lows in the single digits and teens spill into
northern Michigan through the second half of the week before warming
next weekend.

Lingering NW flow lake effect into the morning hours for CIU and
PLN...but improving conditions largely expected elsewhere, save for
MBL which may or may not fog in as winds go light into midday or so.
Improvements look to be largely brief...as winds begin to shift
around to the SE ahead of the next approaching system...moving in
along a stalled front draped across our area. Next system will be
potent, with strengthening SE-ly winds toward evening...especially
aloft, with winds ramping up to 30-40+kts up over 3000ft by evening.
Anticipate snow should begin to develop toward late
afternoon/evening, particularly across the northern TAF sites (CIU,
PLN, perhaps APN?) with some potential for things to remain a little
drier for a time for TVC and MBL. Do have concerns for IFR
cigs/visbys at CIU and perhaps PLN this evening, depending on where
the more intense snow ends up developing with this system.
