.NEAR TERM...(Through Tonight)

High Impact Weather Potential...Fog with the rain, that could limit
visibility to less than 1/4 mile at times.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast/Concerns...The 500 mb ridge axis in now
just east of the Upper Great Lakes with the sfc ridge along the
Atlantic seaboard. The region is getting southerly return flow with
high level clouds ahead of the next system. The next system is a
Colorado low that is now in C Kansas and will continue to move into
the Upper Mississippi River Valley by 06z/Wed. As the low moves,
first the warm front will move through the forecast area, and
produce scattered showers in NW Lower and between 21z/Tue and
00z/Wed. After 00z/Wed, the rain will steadily move into the region,
as the storm moves to the near the Twin Cities. By 12z/Wed, the
storm center will be over C Lake Superior with the cold front moving
across Wisconsin. The rain showers will turn move steady with the
heaviest being in the UP and the tip of the mitt.

The main concern, isn't the amount of rain (qpf) for the region,
it's the fog that will be produced, once the dewpoints rise above 32
degrees. Overnight, with the rain and the warm temperatures and
dewpoints above 35F after 06z, fog will probably be become patchy,
and dense as the rain and melting snow is trapped beneath the
inversion through 12z.

.SHORT TERM...(Wednesday through Friday)

High Impact Weather Potential: Accumulating and blowing snow
potential Thursday - Thursday night.

Pattern Synopsis:

A strong upper-level jet will continue to punch across the Great
Lakes on Wednesday as an embedded shortwave lifts northeast into
Quebec. An associated surface low will follow suit, trekking across
the far northern Great Lakes and into Quebec by Thursday. Longwave
troughing will gradually move across the center of the CONUS through
the end of the week as an embedded speed max/subtle shortwave
punches from the southern Plains into the Great Lakes by Thursday
evening. This will support a near-1000mb cyclone that is expected to
track across the southern Great Lakes Thursday night into Friday.

Forecast Details:

Rain showers are expected to be ongoing across parts of northern
Michigan Wednesday morning. This activity is expected to last into
the afternoon hours before tapering off as the aforementioned system
continues to lift further away from the region and an attendant cold
front swings through. Gusty southwesterly winds are anticipated late
Wednesday morning into Wednesday night, gusting as high as 35-50
mph. The best chance for gusts near 50 mph will be across areas near
Saginaw Bay.

The main focus of the short term will be on the second system that
is set to bring accumulating and potential blowing snow to a large
swath of northern lower Michigan Thursday and Thursday night. Snow
chances will arrive from southwest to northeast Thursday morning
into early Thursday afternoon with the most likely time for
heaviest/steadiest snowfall between 4-10 pm. Forcing aloft
collocated with an impressive isothermal saturated layer near the
DGZ will aid relatively efficient snowfall rates, potentially as
high as 1" per hour at times during that period. This may lead to
quick accumulations on roadways during the Thursday commute.

There is still relatively high uncertainty at this forecast time
period in regards to the location of heaviest expected snowfall. The
highest uncertainty lies along a SW-NE oriented line approximately
through Manistee, Traverse City, Gaylord, and Alpena. While some
model solutions bring snowfall totals approaching warning criteria
to these areas, current confidence based on the unimpressive nature
of the driving wave aloft and a subset of guidance solutions lends
to higher confidence in a slightly further southeast and weaker
system. Thus, forecast amounts along and southeast of this line
range from 4-7" with locally higher amounts of 8"+ possible --
especially within any heavy banding that lasts later into the
evening hours where thermodynamic profiles cool and become more
favorable for dendritic growth. Areas along and northwest of the
previously mentioned line are expected to see around 1-4" with
little accumulation across most of the upper peninsula.

Aforementioned snowfall may lead to hazardous travel across much of
northern lower Michigan during the Thursday evening work commute
with slippery, snow-covered roads and drops in visibility down to
1/2 mile or less at times. Wind gusts of 20-30 mph will also create
blowing snow across some open areas and lead to potential recovering
of already-plowed roads overnight Thursday into Friday. Otherwise,
temperatures in the 40s and low 50s on Wednesday will quickly drop
into the teens and 20s Wednesday night, and will remain cool through
the remainder of the week.

High Impact Weather Potential: Low for now

Upper-level troughing will continue to slide east of the Great Lakes
Friday night as ridging temporarily slides overhead, building
surface high pressure across much of the eastern CONUS through
Saturday. Mainly quiet weather is expected across northern Michigan
through the weekend with the next chances for precip coming later
Sunday into Monday as a clipper system passes to our north.
Otherwise, temperatures look to warm back up well above average
through the weekend into early next week. Forecast highs in the mid
30s to mid 40s will be around 5-10 degrees above average for the
middle of February. High temperatures look to cool back down into
the 20s heading into the middle of next week.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Wednesday afternoon)

High pressure continues to move east, and the high clouds are
moving into the forecast area. The main concern continues to be
the rain moving into the region around 00z/Wed. Expect scattered
showers to move into the region from SW to NE around 21z/Tue, and
continue north and east through the evening. Around 03/Wed
prevailing CIGs will begin to fall, followed by the VSBYs as the
rain becomes more widespread. The rain, and low VSBYs are expected
to remain through 18z around KCIU and KPLN. The rain is expected
to be the most in the UP and "tip of the mitt", leaving the rest
of N Lower to dry out through the day. The LLWS will be last to
leave off of the Lake Huron shore around 18z/Wed.

Tonight through Thursday...Tonight, Wind increase to small craft
criteria tonight, although, the wind will diminish a bit as the sfc
low moves through Lake Superior overnight. By Wednesday, the low
will move from  Lake Superior to western Quebec by 00z/Thu. As it
does, the winds will increase to gales by Wednesday afternoon. The
winds will diminish in Lake Michigan first during Wednesday evening.
The winds will continue to diminish, Wednesday night, to below small
craft conditions by 12z/Thu. Thursday, the winds will begin to
increase again to small craft conditions by the late afternoon, on
all of the Upper Great Lakes.
