.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
One more relatively mild day...then turning colder tonight...
High Impact Weather Potential...Rain changing to snow late tonight
could cause some slippery roads.
Closed upper low over the Mid Mississippi Valley is in the process
of opening into a sharp upper level trough as it pivots
northeastward into the Great Lakes region. Next area of light rain
is lifting northward thru Lower Michigan in advance of this system.
Temps are holding mainly in the low to mid 40s across our entire CWA
thanks to persistent southerly flow/low level WAA ahead of this
system.
Initial trough will swing thru Michigan today...with a secondary
deeper trough axis dropping out of Western Ontario and into the
Western Great Lakes region tonight. Passage of the initial trough
axis will usher in somewhat cooler air...as 850 mb temps drop from
around +1C this morning to around -2C by late this afternoon. Temps
will hold mainly in the low to mid 40s throughout today...keeping
any precip that does occur in liquid form. Expect some patchy fog
development as well.
Secondary trough will then bring significantly colder air into the
region tonight...sufficiently cold to slowly switch precip type from
rain to snow and to start increasing over-lake instability. Temps
will fall throughout the night...but will remain above freezing
during the evening. As temps fall to and just below freezing
tonight...and rain mixes with and eventually switches over to all
snow...some roadways will become slippery. Any new snow accumulation
should be confined to the overnight hours...and will be mainly
within our typical snowbelt areas. Expect up to an inch of new snow
in these areas late tonight.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Snow and Blowing Snow Monday...
High Impact Weather...Low visibility and slick roads likely Monday.
Primary Forecast Concerns...Impacts and snow amounts Monday.
Monday into Monday evening...Models seem to have arrived at a more
agressive solution with a pair of northern stream troughs joining
forces as well as interacting to a lesser extent with the deep
system well off to our east across the Northeastern states. Sharp
cyclonic flow, a shot of deep moisture, excellent over lake
instability all appear to come together for several hours during the
day Monday to bring a period of moderate to perhaps heavy snow
showers. In addition, expect good lake enhancement in northwest flow
favored areas targeting the Traverse City to Kalkaska corridor.
Model soundings look rather impressive with inversion heights
pushing 11,000 feet or so. Progressively colder air will push deep
moisture more into the dendritic growth zone (dgz) which is -12 to
-18 C) so snowflakes will likely become the large/stackable variety.
At this point could see between 3 and 6 inches of accumulation in
the targeted areas (Traverse City to Kalkaska) with lesser amounts
in the 2 to 4 inch range in surrounding spots of northwest lower
with an inch or two possible adjacent to Lake Huron. Another factor
is the expected strong and gusty winds (in the 35 to 40 mph range)
which will likely lead to areas of limited visibility due to blowing
and drifting snow. Will likely need winter weather advisories for
several counties of northwest lower Michigan.
Overnight Monday into Tuesday...moisture quickly strips out of the
column as dry air quickly advects in from the west. This should end
snow shower activity overnight. Heights aloft and at the surface
increase Tuesday as well as plenty of dry air to bring a decent
amount of sunshine.
Highs for Monday and Tuesday in the upper 20s to mid 30s. Lows
Monday night in the teens to low 20s.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Uneventful and Mild...
A nearly zonal flow aloft is expected for much of the remainder of
the week. Extended guidance does have a couple of weak disturbances
possibly moving through the flow late in the week into next weekend.
However...there is lots of uncertainty over the timing and details.
Will continue with the slight or low chances for rain Friday into
Saturday. Forecast highs will be in the mild 30s to low 40s for the
most part.

.AVIATION /12Z TAFS THROUGH 12Z MONDAY/...
Scattered rain showers thru today will gradually mix with and
eventually change to snow showers throughout tonight as an upper
level trough axis swings thru the Western Great Lakes...ushering
much colder air into the region. Prevailing conditions will
remain MVFR/IFR thru the 24 hours TAF forecast period. Surface
winds will remain from the south AOB 10 kts today...shifting to
the SW and eventually to the NW tonight and strengthening to 10
to 20 kts with some higher gusts late tonight.

Winds and waves will slowly increase today and tonight...and will
likely reach gale warning criteria along all of our nearshore waters
Monday into Monday evening behind a strong upper level trough axis
that will swing thru Michigan. Arrival of colder air behind this
trough will produce lake effect snow showers later tonight...Monday
and Monday night...targeting our typical snowbelt regions for
the most persistent snow shower activity.
