High Impact Weather Potential...None.

S/SW low level winds continue to strengthen across Michigan early
this morning between a large area of high pressure centered along
much of the Atlantic Coast and an approaching cold front now
extending from Western Lake Superior thru NW Iowa into the Central
Plains. Plenty of dense cirrus continues to stream into the Western
Great Lakes region along and ahead of this front...with a narrow
band of some low/mid cloud cover immediately ahead of the front. No
precip to speak of with this front due to lack of deep moisture...
and this will remain the case as this feature swings thru our state.

Cold front will reach our far NW CWA by 12Z this morning...and will
then continue to push SE thru the day...reaching Saginaw Bay by mid
to late afternoon. Again...lack of deep moisture will preclude any
chances of precip associated with this front. Even low clouds will
be hard to come by today...with mainly mid and high clouds expected
along and ahead of this boundary. Skies will clear quickly behind
the front...with a good amount of sun expected by later today.
Mainly clear skies are expected thru tonight as low level ridging
builds into the Western Great Lakes.

Temps will again be relatively mild today...with high temps warming
into the 50s. Low temps tonight will cool mainly into the low to
mid 30s.

High Impact Weather Potential: Strong wind gusts Thursday afternoon/
night.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast: Low amplitude/generally zonal flow exists
across North America early this morning...a consolidation of a split
trough just off the west coast with a strong southern branch
disturbance (-4 to -5 sigma standardized 500mb height anomalies) out
near 135W off the California coast.  Short wave ridge axis crossing
the Great Lakes with a short wave trough over Manitoba/far northwest
Ontario...with another wave on its heels coming out of British
Columbia.  Slow moving southern branch short wave trough along the
Louisiana Gulf coast.  Pretty dry in the middle and lower levels
across the Great Lakes/Midwest...a lot of 700mb dew point
depressions >20C (21C at APX...45C at ILX)...and 49C 850mb dew point
depressions at ILX/DVN/GRB/APX.  There is a very narrow axis of
higher 850mb theta-e/dew points from Minnesota southwest into
eastern Nebraska/western Kansas and down into the southern High
Plains.

Surface analysis shows a 1032mb high from the lower Great Lakes into
the mid Atlantic...occluded 988mb low over northern Manitoba with an
occluded/cold front arcing southward into Minnesota/Nebraska with
southerly boundary layer flow into Michigan in between these two
features.

Northern branch of the split eastern Pacific trough will yield a
strong short wave trough that will make steady progress into central
Canada and the northern Plains by later Thursday.  This trough then
swings through the Great Lakes Friday along with colder temperatures
(850mb temperature plunge below 0C during the day Friday). Resultant
cyclogenesis over the Dakotas Thursday expected to track into
northwest Ontario Thursday night and deepen to sub-980mb near or
east of James Bay Friday morning.  This in turn will pull a strong
cold front across Michigan Friday (probably across northern Michigan
by Friday morning).  High pressure ridge builds in behind the front
Friday night.

Primary Forecast Concerns:  Main forecast focus will be on impacts
with cold frontal passage early Friday.

Cold front impacts Thursday night/Friday...First concern with this
is going to be wind potential which ramps up Thursday afternoon and
continues into Thursday night.  A mild and breezy afternoon expected
(highs into the 50s with some probabilities (30-40%) of a few spots
hitting 60 from the Leelanau Peninsula along the lakeshore counties
to the Straits...downslope areas with south winds).  As mentioned
yesterday in this space always tricky in warm advection scenarios
with screaming winds not far off the deck...but those winds are
forecast to be strong in the guidance due to being decoupled from
the boundary layer (50-60+ knot southwesterly low level jet Thursday
night).  Wind gusts of 25-35+ mph expected to develop Thursday
afternoon (strongest eastern Upper/northwest Lower)...then the
combination of the strongest pressure gradient and low level
momentum expected in roughly the 00z-09z time window.  Will be
relying a lot of turbulent mixing here to pull stronger momentum to
the surface...but may get an assist from overnight precipitation
(more on that later).  Wind Advisory gusts are 45+ mph...as of now
most likely areas that could see one are areas west of I-75/north of
M-72 in northern Lower...and at least Mackinac county in eastern
Upper especially with winds blowing in off of Lake Superior (US-2
corridor especially problematic).  Cold front as of now expected to
cross northern Michigan in the 06z-13z time frame...post-frontal
winds will diminish Friday morning but still be gusty with better
mixing/isentropic downslope flow forcing momentum to the surface.
But any advisory criteria winds should be done with by Friday
morning...with winds continuing to decrease through the day as
gradient weakens with high pressure ridging into the upper Lakes
during the afternoon.

Cold front will initially be dry upstream...but like this morning a
narrow return flow of moisture will interact with the front as it
approaches.  But unlike this morning moisture will be more
substantial (precipitable water values 0.75-1.00 inch) as will the
forcing.  So a frontal rain band is expected to develop across Upper
Michigan/Wisconsin and sweep across northern Michigan early Friday
morning.  Minimal instability so thunder chances look small unless
its forced convection due to the strong frontal forcing.  Behind the
cold front shrinking surface-based warm layer depth may allow
precipitation to mix with or change over to snow...especially north
of the bridge and in the higher terrain of northern Lower.
Precipitation expected to come to an end from west to east Friday
morning as drier air arrives...some instability clouds off Lakes
Superior/Michigan (few showers around Whitefish Bay??).

Temperatures should take a sharp drop with cold frontal passage...
probably on the order of 10 to 15 degrees over an hour or so.  Once
temperatures drop should be mostly steady through the afternoon.

High Impact Weather Potential: Minimal.

Trough axis that arrives across the Great Lakes on Friday slows down
quite a bit for the weekend...reinforced by a secondary piece of
short wave energy and cold air Saturday.  Trough eventually moves
east of Michigan in the later Sunday-Monday time frame...with the
split trough coming in off the eastern Pacific and into central
North America early next week.  Whether the northern branch (colder)
or southern branch (warmer) dominates is up for debate with a lot of
variance there.

Reinforcing short wave trough should have a weak surface reflection/
quasi-clipper for Saturday...but with the main trough axis expected
to be east of the state Sunday high pressure is forecast to build
across the Great Lakes.  Beyond that the forecast becomes rather
muddled...it looks unsettled regardless by Tuesday but the
temperature spread is potentially large.
