High Impact Weather Potential: Significant winter storm today and
tonight across the Great Lakes.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast:

One impressive NOAM water vapor imagery out there early this
morning..featuring dual shortwave troughs within deep western
longwave trough axis and northward expanding subtropical ridge into
the central Mississippi Valley. Polar low centered center mass over
Hudson Bay, with lower heights on its southern flank putting the
proverbial "squeeze" play between it and that expanding subtropical
ridge. Result is an obvious one, with dual upper level jet cores
bisection lower Michigan. Maturing low level response to the above
well underway, with 50+ knot low level jet bowing north into
Illinois and eastern Iowa. Frontogenetical response on its northern
flank, helped along by those upper jet cores, forcing an expanding
area of mostly light snow across the western Great Lakes...some of
which is pivoting east into northern lower Michigan.

Southern shortwave within that western trough will eject rapidly
northeast today, steadily deamplifying as it does so...reaching
vicinity the northern Ohio Valley by this evening. Southern lakes
baroclinic axis will respond accordingly, with an expected
tightening of the low level thermal gradient. Second spoke of
western energy follows quickly, reaching the Upper Mississippi
Valley region by daybreak Thursday. Above sets the stage for a
rather impactful and prolonged winter weather event across the Great
Lakes today through Thursday.

Primary Forecast Concerns/Challenges:

Snow evolution, amounts, and headline management concerns through
tonight.

Details:

Still a challenging forecast, with disjointed forcing mechanisms
through the period. Initial frontogenetical-driven snow expected to
continue through at least this morning, bringing some light snow
accumulations. Focus for this afternoon and tonight centers on rapid
fgen response along that southern lakes tightening thermal gradient.
Should be an impressive response indeed, with strong low level jet
perpendicular to the thermal gradient and precipitable water values
nearing an inch. Pattern recognition strongly supports rapid
precipitation organization and expansion along this gradient. Snow
will expand north, likely greatly slowed by increasingly gusty
northeast winds supplying a direct feed of dry low level air. Best
forcing follows nose of low level jet well to our south, suggesting
overall precipitation shield will gradually weaken as it moves north
into our area. Soundings across our southern areas this
afternoon...while supporting all snow...also show omega centered
outside the favored dendritic growth zone...supporting relatively
low snow to liquid ratios (those lower ratios also supported by
increasing flake fragmentation). To further complicate matters, the
low level thermal gradient remains plenty cold enough for some Lake
Huron moisture contribution into northeast lower Michigan. Upshot to
the above, likely looking at a few inches of snow by this evening
for areas south of M-72 and perhaps across northeast lower
Michigan...with amounts steadily decreasing as one goes northwest.
Eastern upper Michigan simply too far removed from best forcing and
too deep into dry air to allow much snow to reach that far north.

Snow will continue to spread north across northern lower Michigan
tonight. While best forcing centers southeast and west of our area
with time tonight, could still see some brief periods of inch per
hour snowfall rates (again...helped along by Lake Huron low level
moisture contribution into northeast lower Michigan). Couple that
with gusty northeast winds, and little doubt visibilities will fall
substantially at times...especially in those more open areas. While
overall precipitation amounts will decrease further north, snow to
liquid ratios will help offset some. Likely looking at an additional
2 to 5 inches of new snow tonight across northern lower Michigan.
Not sold at all for significant snows to reach north of the big
bridge tonight given very dry northeast flow and a further removal
from better forcing mechanisms. May take until Thursday to see
better accumulating snow across eastern upper Michigan.

.SHORT TERM...(Thursday through Friday)

High Impact Weather Potential: Impactful wintry weather and gusty
winds continue Thursday with hazardous travel likely to continue in
many areas.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast: At the start of the period Thursday
morning, large scale troughing encompasses much of the western two-
thirds of the CONUS with more zonal flow off to our east across the
eastern seaboard. Primary focus will revolve around an embedded mid-
level shortwave trough draped from the northern Plains into the
Upper MS Valley that's progged to cross the Northwoods during the
day Thursday. Attendant secondary area of low pressure is expected
to trek from near ORD to GRR to BAX through this time frame. Another
surge of deep moisture and forcing on the north side of this low
pressure is expected to continue periods of wintry weather across
the forecast area, especially Thursday morning through Thursday
afternoon before gradually diminishing in areal coverage/intensity.

Primary Forecast Concerns: Snow amounts and mixed precip, along with
gusty winds Thursday.

Widespread wintry precipitation expected to be ongoing Thursday
morning across the vast majority of northern Michigan. While current
confidence is highest in the primary precipitation type falling as
snow north of M-72, latest forecast soundings display more of a
wintry mix of snow/sleet potential over southern areas. Certainly
seems feasible as the surface low treks nearby/just to the south
resulting in a brief decrease in deep moisture and a shallow warm
nose centered near 800mb. That said, there remains some wiggle room
as it won't take much northward or southward track of that low
center for the mixed precip line to change fairly significantly.
Beyond that mix potential, latest trends suggest mainly snow
prevails for the afternoon hours before the strongest forcing for
ascent and deep moisture strip east with time by Thursday evening.
Current forecast supports 3-6" of new snow from 12z Thursday to 00z
Friday along/north of M-32 with amounts tapering to the south.
No doubt that snow showers will persist through Thursday night given
ample over-lake instability across the northern Great Lakes as H8
temps fall to around -20C. Those lake induced snow showers likely to
continue right on through the day Friday despite slowly warming low-
level thermal profiles and backing winds. Additional lake effect
accumulation during the day Friday looks fairly minimal with perhaps
a few localized spots picking up an inch or two.

Gusty east winds prevail Thursday and while SLRs should be
decreasing across southern areas with time given aforementioned
mixed precip potential, gusts upwards of 30-35 mph will likely
continue a blowing/drifting snow component. Gusts diminish to near
20 mph or so Thursday night, but with temperatures falling
considerably, wind chills will likely plummet well below zero for
many areas...perhaps even flirting with wind chill advisory criteria
for brief periods late Thursday night/early Friday morning.

Overall, certainly a wintry end to the week on tap for northern
Michigan with periods of significantly impacted travel, including
the morning/evening commutes on Thursday. Snow-covered/slick roads
and pockets of significantly reduced visibility in falling and
blowing snow likely.

.LONG TERM...(Friday night through Tuesday)

High Impact Weather Potential: More wintry weather potential Friday
night into early Saturday. Possible wind-driven rain/snow early next
week?

Generally weak return flow is expected to prevail Friday evening as
low-level warm air advection dominates, likely bringing an eventual
end to any lingering lake induced snow shower activity. However,
latest trends suggest another fast-moving clipper system racing by
to our north by late Friday night into Saturday...potentially
bringing another round of wintry weather to portions of northern
Michigan. Lots of uncertainty with regards to snow coverage and
amounts at this point, but certainly some potential for late week
wintry weather to continue into the weekend.

While a brief window of tranquil wx conditions may prevail late
weekend into very early next week, potential exists for a potent
area of low pressure to emerge out of the southern/central Plains
next week...potentially riding northeast across the mid-MS Valley
into the western Great Lakes by Monday night/Tuesday. If current
trends hold true, lots of wind potential with that system, along
with a myriad of precipitation types despite a lack of associated
truly cold air.

Light to moderate snow is expected to move into MBL and TVC very
early in the taf period, reaching APN and PLN in a few hours. CIU
should remain snow free until late in the period. Lighter snow
is expected to fall later Wednesday morning. Moderate to possibly
heavy snow is expected Wednesday evening into Wednesday night.
East northeast winds will increase Wednesday afternoon and become
rather gusty into Wednesday night. Cigs and vsbys will go downhill
heading into late Wednesday and Wednesday night.
