.SYNOPSIS...
Mostly cloudy and blustery conditions are expected through this
afternoon with some lake-effect snow showers and flurries,
mainly for areas north and west of Albany. A stronger, moisture-
laden system arrives on Wednesday. Accumulating snow is expected
during the afternoon and evening, changing to rain or a wintry
mix Wednesday night over most areas. The precip will diminish on
Thursday with temperatures becoming mild, but light snow will
linger over the higher terrain.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
.UPDATE...As of 1050 AM EDT, upper-level trough and weak surface
boundary has pushed across the region. Cold air moving over the
warmer waters of the Great Lakes is leading to lake-effect snow
showers and flurries which will continue into the early evening
hours before tapering off. Some light accumulations will be
possible into tonight (1 to 3 inches), especially across the
Adirondacks. Upslope snow showers are also expected across the
southern Greens with some light accumulations as well. A flurry
cannot be ruled out along the Hudson Valley from the Capital
District and points north this afternoon, but no accumulation is
expected with air temperatures above freezing.

Otherwise, a mostly cloudy and blustery afternoon is in store
with occasional gusts of 20 to 30 mph expected. Wind will begin
to lessen tonight ahead of our next system. High temperatures
this afternoon will reach the upper 20s to upper 30s.

Tonight, weak midlevel height rises and high pressure nosing in
from southern Quebec will put a stop to the snow shower activity
over the higher terrain. Partial clearing is possible in the
valleys with mostly cloudy skies continuing over the higher
terrain. Lows in the mid teens to low 20s expected.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Winter Storm Watch in effect Wednesday afternoon through
Wednesday night for the eastern Catskills and Berkshires;
through Thursday evening for the southern Adirondacks, Glens
Falls Saratoga region and southern Vermont...

Deamplifying midlevel wave will lift from the lower Ohio Valley
into the eastern Great Lakes Wednesday into Wednesday night.
Very strong 500 mb jet of 100+ kt will arc around the base of
the trough from the Gulf Coast into the Northeast US. At lower
levels, primary low will strengthen as it tracks from the lower
Ohio Valley to the St. Lawrence Valley Wed/Wed night. Weaker
secondary low development is expected Wednesday night from the
DC area to southern New England. Low level wind field
strengthens through the day Wednesday with 850 mb winds of 40-50
kt by 00Z Thu. Broad area of isentropic lift will spread into
the area during the afternoon with thermal profiles supporting
snow everywhere initially. 850 to 700 mb frontogenesis will be
strong as well. The first part of this event fits the laterally
translating snow band model per CSTAR research. The accumulating
snow should continue through the evening rush hour, likely
resulting in difficult travel conditions.

As the low-level jet magnitudes continue to increase Wednesday
evening, the terrain impacts will become more prominent, with
downsloping cutting down on snowfall rates a bit roughly between
the Hudson River and the NY/New England border, as well as in
the Schoharie and central Mohawk Valleys. Conversely, upsloping
will enhance snowfall rates over the eastern Catskills, southern
Greens, eastern Berkshire County, the southern Adirondacks, and
possibly the Saratoga/Glens Falls areas. Rates could be around
an inch per hour at times here Wednesday evening. This roughly
corresponds to the areas where Winter Storm Watches were issued
for the potential of 7 inches of snow or more.

Wednesday evening/night, above-freezing air will be working in
from the south both at the surface and aloft. This will allow
the snow to chance to a wintry mix or rain depending on surface
temps in the 00-06Z (7 pm to 1 am) timeframe. Current thinking
is that the Hudson Valley from the Capital District south, the
southern Taconics, and Litchfield Hills will generally flip
from snow to rain without much of a wintry mix, while other
areas could see some light freezing rain accumulation. Parts of
the Adirondacks may remain snow for the entirety of the event.
Rain could be briefly moderate to heavy over parts of the Mid
Hudson Valley and Litchfield County where the secondary low will
focus convergence and PWATs will reach 0.75 to 1.00 inches. A
midlevel dry slot will be working into the region roughly 06-12Z
Thursday (1-7 am) on the strong 500 mb winds, which will result
in steadier precip tapering to showers or drizzle.

The other consequence of the strengthening secondary low will be
rather strong easterly winds Wednesday evening into Wednesday
night, especially over the typical areas immediately west of
the high terrain of western New England and the Taconics. Winds
could gust to 30 kt here, but an inversion is expected to
prevent the stronger LLJ magnitudes from mixing down to the
surface.

On Thursday, colder air will move in aloft as the system pulls
away. With the midlevel dry slot in place, any precip should be
tied to orographic/lake effect processes, with the valleys not
seeing much additional precip. However, a few more inches of
snow will be possible over the southern Adirondacks and southern
Greens, where the Watch continues through the day. It will be
somewhat mild with highs in the low 30s to low 40s, but falling
through the day north and west of Albany.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
The active weather pattern will continue through the weekend
into early next week. Guidance is in good agreement regarding
the longwave pattern. Expecting northern stream short waves to
maintain the longwave trough across the region into the beginning
of the weekend with an Alberta Clipper low moving through with
chances for snow showers mainly limited downwind of Lake Ontario
into our forecast area. The flow is then expected to become more
zonal with our region on the southern periphery of the upper
level over Hudson Bay Low, however yet another northern stream
short wave will approach and its associated low pressure system
will bring widespread chances for mainly snow showers to the
area as we close out the weekend and start the new work/school
week.

Seasonal temperatures for late January are expected as we close
out the week with lows in the single digits and teens with
highs in the teens to mid 30s. Above normal temperatures are
then expected over the weekend and Monday especially at night.

terminals. However, due to enhanced low level moisture, ceilings
at all terminals except KPOU have remained within the low VFR
and upper MVFR categories throughout the morning. Ceilings
should improve to VFR within the next hour or so and remain
there overnight. There is a chance that a narrow drying slot
streaming up through the Hudson valley will take hold of
KALB/KPOU/KGFL overnight and rise ceilings well into the VFR
threshold. While confidence in this is not absolute,
TEMPO/prevailing groups were added to account for the change.
Heading into tomorrow afternoon, ceilings will approach MVFR
ahead of an incoming winter system.

Winds will continue to be breezy this afternoon out of the
west/northwest, switching over to more northerly tonight and
ranging in magnitude from 0-5 kt for the remainder of the 18z
cycle.
