.SYNOPSIS...
A weak disturbance will move east of the region this morning,
with high pressure building east across the Ohio Valley today.
Some lake effect snow is expected over the western Adirondacks,
otherwise dry conditions will occur with seasonable
temperatures. Tranquil weather in store through the day
Thursday. Then, an Arctic cold front will sweep southward across
the region Thursday night. This front will usher in a frigid
air mass with gusty winds resulting in dangerously low wind
chills Friday into Saturday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 110 pm...strong zonal jet remains strung out just to our
south, while at the surface, high pressure is nosing in from the
southwest. This is maintaining tranquil and seasonably cold
conditions over most of the forecast area. Sky cover ranges from
mostly clear along and south of I-90 to partly to mostly cloudy
north. A strong lake effect band is mainly west of the forecast
area, but some lighter snow is moving into far northwest
Herkimer County. CAMs suggest this band makes some limited
inroads inland and south through 06Z before retreating north.
Due to limited moisture depths, do not expect heavy lake effect
in the local forecast area, but a few inches are possible from
Old Forge on north. Otherwise, sky cover will continue to range
from partly to mostly cloudy north of I-90 to mostly clear south
tonight, with lows mainly in the teens.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
Wind Chill Watch issued for the entire area from late Thursday
night through Saturday...

On Thursday, a SW flow aloft will bring some slightly milder
air into our area. With partly/mostly sunny skies expected, high
temperatures should reach the upper 20s(mountains) to mid/upper
30s(valleys). A SW breeze of 10-15 mph with some higher gusts
along with the continued dry air mass will make it feel a bit
cooler though.

On Thursday night a true Arctic cold front will plunge
southeast across the region. The front will be accompanied by a
band of snow showers(with possible brief squalls), which will be
most prevalent across the Adirondacks then becoming more
scattered as the front progresses south. In wake of the front, a
bitterly cold/frigid Arctic air mass will pour into the region
along with gusty northwest winds. With such strong cold
advection commencing rapidly, temperatures will start to quickly
fall late Thursday night into early Friday morning. The
combination of bitterly cold temperatures and gusty winds will
result in dangerously low wind chills developing from NW to SE
late Thursday night into Friday morning.

A deep upper level trough will move in Friday into Friday
night, with the coldest air mass we have seen in several
years(mid Feb 2016). Forecast 850 mb temperatures are still
close to the minimum seen in the GEFS 30-year model climate
database late Friday into early Saturday, with anomalies of -2
to -3 STDEV. Highs will occur in the morning, with temperatures
falling throughout the day on Friday with strong cold advection
persisting. By late afternoon, temperatures will range from
close to -10F in the western Adirondacks to lower 10s in the mid
Hudson Valley. Widely scattered lake effect snow showers will
be possible across the western Mohawk valley, but the extremely
dry air mass will preclude any organized activity in our area.

The worst of the brutal cold will occur Friday night into
Saturday morning. With persistent northwest winds around 15-25
mph gusting to 30-45 mph combined with the frigid temperatures
(actual low temperatures around -5F south to -25F north), wind
chill values will drop to around -25F to -50F. Due to increasing
confidence, the Wind Chill Watch has been expanded to include
the entire forecast area.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Wind Chill Watch for all of eastern NY/western New England
through Saturday afternoon...

Bitter cold air mass will be main focus for the long term,
although it will depart quickly. Widespread wind chills of -25
to -35F in valleys, and -35 to as low as -50 for higher terrain
(coldest across southern Adirondacks) Saturday morning, with
late day high temps only in the single digits and teens.

Bitter cold despite less wind for Saturday evening, then temps
may rise overnight with developing southwest flow. Clipper
system tracks north of the region Sunday into Monday, with surge
of milder air allowing temps to recover into the 30s and even
some lower 40s Sunday afternoon. There could be some snow
showers across the southern Adirondacks Sunday/Sunday night
within warm advective regime, and with cold frontal passage late
Sunday night, possible enhanced by added lake moisture.

Generally dry with seasonable temps Monday-early Tuesday, then
chances for precipitation increase Tuesday afternoon ahead of
next system approaching from the west. With milder air in place,
P-type most likely rain showers, although some brief snow
and/or mixed precipitation can not be ruled out across the
southern Adirondacks and southern VT.

.AVIATION /17Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Through 18z Thursday...VFR conditions are expected to prevail
through at least the end of the TAF period. Will likely see some
additional clouds between 4500 - 6000 ft develop this afternoon and
evening, and diminishing after midnight tonight. Also, some SCT to
BKN mid to high clouds around 10000 ft overspread the region tonight
and tomorrow.

Winds this afternoon become northwesterly within the next hour or
two at 5-10 kt with a few gusts of to 15 kt possible, especially at
ALB. Gusts diminish this evening, but winds remain at 5-10 kt before
becoming around 5 kt or less later tonight. Tomorrow, winds pick up
to around 10 kt from the south by mid-morning at all TAF sites.

every day in January 2023. This is the first time on record
Albany we did not have a high below 30F in the month of January.
