.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front stalls over North Carolina Wednesday, and then
lifts back as a warm front Wednesday night. Record warmth is
expected on Thursday, followed by much cooler conditions Friday
night through Saturday as cold high pressure settles north of
the region.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
As of 935 PM EST Tuesday...

Low pressure is centered over nrn New England and Atlantic
Canada late this evening, with zonal flow aloft over the
central and ern CONUS. The aforementioned sfc low is dragging a
cold front through the region. This front is progged to cross
the remainder of the area overnight before settling into NC
by Wednesday morning. The cold frontal passage tonight is
expected to be dry. Forecast low temperatures range from the
mid/upper 30s N, to the lower to mid 40s elsewhere.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 400 PM EST Tuesday...

The warm front slowly lifts back N across the area Wednesday-
Wednesday night resulting in increasing clouds, with some light
rain possible across the far N, and possibly some sprinkles
farther S, although the sub-cloud layer will be quite dry.
Otherwise, variable clouds S, mostly cloudy central and N
Wednesday- Wednesday night. Overall the trends are a little
weaker with the front so highs have been been nudged a few
degrees higher (especially S), except on the eastern shore where
the marine influence will be strongest. Highs Wednesday range
from around 50F to lower-mid 50s MD Eastern Shore to the low-mid
70s across interior NE NC.

The warm front will lift NE of the area by early Thursday,
setting up a very warm and generally dry and breezy day Thursday
(low level wind out of the WSW). Highs will be into the lower
80s across much of the CWA W of the Bay, with readings mainly
ranging through the 70s over most of the Ern Shore (see Climate
section below for record highs on Thu 2/23 and all-time Feb
record highs). The cold front pushes through Thursday night, but
remaining very warm for late Feb with lows in the lower 50s NW
to the lower 60s SE.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 340 AM EST Wednesday...

The medium range period begins with the flow aloft briefly
becoming WNW Fri night into early Sat as a progressive upper
trough pushes off the New England coast. This allows strong high
pressure (~1040mb) to move from the eastern Great Lakes to New
England. Locally, Fri night turns sharply colder with dry air
filtering in from the N. Lows will range from the mid 20s to
lower 30s across most of the area, with mid-upper 30s across the
SE. While the 00Z models show some differences in the amount of
cold air reaching into the local area as well as timing of
overrunning moisture moving in from the west on Sat, the
general pattern shows good overall agreement. While the sfc high
is initially quite strong, the progressive nature of the flow
aloft suggests the sfc high rapidly weakens and moves to the
east during the day Sat. The strong upper ridge centered over
the Gulf of Mexico also supports a warm nose aloft moving in
from the SW rather quickly. Will have low chc PoPs initially
over the along/W of I-95 Sat morning, spreading E and becoming
likely central and S to high chc N Sat aftn. Have mainly SN as
p-type across the N to start, with RA/SN central and RA SE. Will
shift p-type to RA/IP or SN/IP into much of central and eastern
VA by late morning/early aftn and then primarily all rain after
18Z. The MD eastern shore appears to have the best chc for
seeing a period of mainly snow until after 18Z (with the warm
nose aloft staying SW). Sat will be the only cold day of the
period with highs below avg, ranging from the mid-upper 40s SE
to around 40F across the N. That initial system moves away by
early Sun...with partial clearing and much warmer temperatures
for Sunday (highs upper 50s to mid 60s). Another weak low
pressure system looks to quickly arrive from the W later Mon/Mon
night resulting in more unsettled wx (chc PoPs). Lows Sun night
in the 30s to lower 40s, with highs Mon a bit uncertain given
precip moving back in (mainly in the 60s S but likely holding
in the 50s N). That system exits off the coast by early Tue,
with downsloping/drying conditions and continued mild WX. Lows
Mon night in the 40s N and 50s S, with highs Tue in the lower to
mid 60s N to around 70F S.

.AVIATION /09Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 1250 AM EST Wednesday...

VFR conditions will continue to prevail through the 06z TAF
period. A cold front will slide through the region overnight
with the wind becoming light out of the NE with increasing high
clouds. Mostly cloudy to overcast on Wednesday with cloud bases
lowering to 5000-7000ft AGL. Winds will generally be 5-10kt and
veer from the E to SE and a warm front lifts through the area.
There could be an isolated, light shower north of RIC from
12-15z and at SBY from 15z-18z. However, coverage is expected to
be too low to necessitate mention in the TAFs as most areas will
remain dry. Otherwise, most of the area should just remain
cloudy in the morning hours. Expecting VFR CIGs/VISs to remain
into Wednesday night as overcast skies become scattered-broken.
A robust low-level jet develops Wed evening and will likely
lead to widespread LLWS conditions after ~00z. This LLJ will
persist into the overnight hours.

Outlook: VFR conditions continue Thursday with a breezy SW
wind. The wind shifts to the N-NW Friday and remains breezy as
high pressure builds in from the NNW. The next system arrives on
Saturday with a chance for precip (possibly mixed precip at the
onset for RIC/SBY) and flight restrictions. Improving
conditions are expected by Sunday.

.MARINE...
As of 915 PM EST Tuesday...

Winds fell below SCA-criteria earlier this evening with the loss
of mixing quickly decreasing after 6 pm. For tonight through
tomorrow high pressure briefly moves across the region.
Southwest winds then increase later tomorrow evening into
Thursday as a warm front lifts back north across the waters and
a cold front begins to approach from the west resulting in a
tightening pressure gradient. Another round of SCAs will likely
be for at least the tidal rivers and Chesapeake Bay Wednesday
evening into Thursday. Similar to today, the highest wind gusts
during the day on Thursday will likely be closer to the shore
where mixing is more prevalent. Winds briefly decrease Thursday
night before increasing again on Friday and becoming W/NW in the
wake of the cold front. SCAs will again be needed for most
locations Friday into Friday night due to NW winds of 15 to 25
kt with gusts to around 30 kt. Winds diminish below SCA-criteria
late Friday night/early Saturday morning.

Seas generally range from 2 to 3 feet (waves 1 to 2 feet in the
Bay) this evening through Wednesday. Seas build to around 3 to
4 feet (5 feet out 20 nm) Thursday due to the increasing SW
wind. Seas briefly diminish Thursday night before building again
Friday into Friday night.

.FIRE WEATHER...
As of 700 PM EST Tuesday...

Warm and breezy conditions are expected on Thursday, but min RH
values will be in the 40-50% range. A mainly dry cold front
will cross the area Thursday night into Friday. Not as warm, but
min RH values will drop to 20-30% inland W of the Bay (30-45%
toward the coast) along with a breezy NW wind. Increased fire
danger is possible Friday.
