.SYNOPSIS...
Strong high pressure will remain north of the local area today
while an area of low pressure begins to develop off the
southeast US coast. The low is expected to lift north along the
coast this weekend bringing a period of unsettled conditions to
the region. Precipitation chances continue into early next week
as a closed upper low slowly tracks to the south of the area.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 345 AM EDT Friday...

Surface high pressure centered over the Great Lakes is ridging into
the Mid-Atlantic early this morning. Meanwhile, an area of low
pressure is developing off the FL/GA coast. High clouds streaming in
from the south are over much of the FA as of latest satellite. With
cool high pressure in place, temps have dropped into the low-mid 40s
across much of the area. Closer to Hampton Roads and NE NC, temps
are in the low-mid 50s. Expect that temps will drop another degree
or two before sunrise.

Through the day, low pressure off the FL/GA coast will continue to
develop and begin to push north along the Atlantic coast. As this
happens, thicker clouds push north into the region and winds
will become gusty. Highest winds will be near the SE coast where
gusts are expected to be 30-35mph this afternoon. Temps will
be on the cooler side today. Highs will be on either side of 70
with cooler temps across the south and warmer temps in the NW
where less cloud cover/less wind is expected. Overnight, showers
associated with the low will push into far southern portions of
the FA. PoPs (25-35%) are limited to below the NC/VA border.
Lows tonight range from upper 50s in the SE to upper 40s in the
NW.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
As of 345 AM EDT Friday...

The low pressure system pushing north will shape the weather through
the weekend. Model guidance has come into agreement that the low
pressure center will move onshore over SC sometime Saturday
afternoon. Precip will try to push north, but the majority of the
area should stay dry through most of the day as dry high pressure
remains anchored to the north. Likely PoPs will remain south of the
VA/NC border through Saturday evening. Chnc/SChnc Pops extend as far
N as the Richmond metro. Highs on Sat will be in the mid 60s across
the south, low 70s in the north. Gusty winds are expected as
the pressure gradient tightens. Highest gusts will be along the
coast at 30-40mph. Interior portions of the are will see gusts
25-30mph. As the low pushes NW into the Carolinas Saturday
night, rain will push farther into the area with likely PoPs
reaching the I-64 corridor by Sunday morning.

The forecast for Sunday is still a bit uncertain as it will vary
depending on where the low settles in relation to the local area and
the closed low aloft. However, it is clear that scattered,
possibly widespread showers will persist through the rest of the
weekend. Coverage will likely be higher in the morning, then
focus of precip will be north of I-64 going into Sunday night.
Regarding thunder, guidance does indicate some development of
instability Sun afternoon. This would most likely be along the
SE coast. For now, limiting it to a slight chance. Lows Sun
morning will be in the low-mid 50s for much of the area, low 60s
in the SE. Highs on Sunday will depend on low placement and precip
coverage, but generally expect warmer temps in the far SE
(mid-70s) and cooler temps in the NW (low-60s). Lows Sunday
night/Mon morning will range from mid-50s to mid-60s.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 345 AM EDT Friday...

Unsettled weather is expected to continue through Memorial Day and
into early next week as an upper low meanders south of the local
area. Memorial Day (Monday) will likely be the most unsettled
portion of the forecast period with widespread scattered rain
showers (and possibly a few thunderstorms) across the region.
Slightly warmer on Monday compared to the weekend with high
temperatures generally in the low to mid 70s (upper 70s far SE). The
upper low slowly makes its way offshore Tuesday-Wednesday and high
pressure centered off the New England coast begins to wedge down
into the area. Rain chances will be slightly lower on Tuesday as the
low shifts away (generally ~30 to 50% PoPs). The warming trend
continues on Tuesday with lower rain chances and less cloud cover,
highs generally in the mid to mid 70s (cooler at the coast). Drier
weather returns Wednesday into Thursday with high pressure taking
hold. Cannot completely rule out a shower Wednesday or Thursday
afternoon. Temperatures will be fairly close to normal on Wednesday,
approaching the 80s (low to mid 70s along the coast) and overnight
lows in the 50s to lower 60s. Late week looks to be much warmer
highs well into the 80s, perhaps breaking 90, Thursday/Friday.

.AVIATION /08Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 130 AM EDT Friday...

Generally VFR conditions expected through the 06Z/26 TAF
forecast period. NE winds will remain persistent through the
period...gusty to 20-30 kt at the coast Fri. Mainly SCT-BKN mid-
high clouds tonight into Fri afternoon (though will not rule out
MVFR CIGs (SC) INVOF ECG and/or ORF at times). Through early
this morning, RIC may see some patchy, shallow fog, but
confidence is not high enough for inclusion in the TAFs.

The chance for flight restrictions increases Fri night and
especially Sat- Sun along w/ increased ENE winds (highest over
SE VA/NE NC) as lo pres off the SE CONUS coast moves N closer to
the local area. Unsettled wx and continued potential for flight
restrictions Mon-Tue as weakening lo pres is slow to exit the
mid-Atlantic region.

.MARINE...
As of 430 PM EDT Thursday...

The latest surface analysis indicates high pressure N of the
area with weak sfc trough off the coast of FL. SCAs are in
place today for the lower Bay, lower James River, the Currituck
Sound, and the Coastal waters. While conditions may experience
a (brief) lull in winds overnight, this will be short-lived and
expect winds to increase again Friday through Saturday,
especially across the southern half of the area. The consensus
is for low pressure to push N from the coast of northern FL/GA
Fri/Fri night, and intensify while reaching near the coast of
SC/northeast NC on Sat. High pressure becomes anchored N/NE of
the region, and with a decent pressure gradient, have decided to
raise a Gale Watch across the southern coastal waters/the mouth
of the Bay and the Currituck Sound starting early Sat AM.
Farther N, expect SCA conditions (the NAM is the outlier at bringing
Gale force gusts well into the Bay and coastal waters off the
eastern shore). Winds will gradually decrease through the day
Sunday. After seas drop off Sunday night, expect benign
conditions with continued onshore flow through the first half of
the week.

Latest obs indicate seas around 6-7ft S and 4-5 ft N, with waves
1-2 ft N and 3-4 ft S. With the increase in winds Fri/Sat, seas
are expected to build to 8-11 ft S, and to 6-9 ft N on Sat.
Seas/waves will then steadily drop off Sun through Mon morning.

As of 420 PM EDT Thursday...

Persistent onshore flow will result in high risk of rip
currents and large breaking waves in the surf zone through the
weekend. Waves in the surf zone will avg 4-5 ft N and 5-7 ft S
on Fri, likely increasing to 8+ ft for Va Beach and NC Outer
Banks on Sat. Will eventually need A High Surf Advisory for at
least VA Beach and NC Outer Banks by Fri night/Sat.

Overall it appears that tidal flooding will be minimal with
this event, with at most Minor Flooding at a few sites Saturday-
Sunday.
