A series of low pressure troughs will track northward across the
eastern gulf bringing periods of unsettled weather. Meanwhile,
high pressure remains stationary over the Yukon maintaining
outflow winds.

Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...Showers continue to move through the central
panhandle producing a wintry mix as they work north. Precipitation
will continue to move north across the panhandle through the night
producing chances of precipitation. Did have some freezing precip
early this afternoon over Petersburg, but threat ended after temps
rose above freezing. Could see a brief period of freezing precip
over S Admiralty and E Chichagof late this afternoon as precip
expands northward. However, confidence is too low to include
mention at this time. Most places that do see any precipitation
as rain or snow. Winds have been weaker than what was expected
with the morning issuance of the forecast. Because of this, winds
in this forecast will be starting out weaker across the inner
channels. Sustained wind speeds remain below strong wind, but do
expect to see gusts strong enough to fit into the strong wind
criteria near Skagway. Winds do look to trend upwards again during
the overnight hours into Wednesday morning before trending
downwards during the day on Wednesday.

As for the rest of the forecast, left most elements relatively
unchanged from the morning forecast as confidence remains about
the same as yesterday.

.LONG TERM... / Thursday through Sunday / Not much overall change
to mid range part of the forecast. As pattern of the blocking
ridge over the Western Canada and Northwest CONUS, with a
negatively tilted longwave trough from the Bering Sea to the
southern Gulf of Alaska. Small (and larger) impluses will move
about the long wave trough from South of the Aleutians to the near
the Pacific NW and then back north west of British Columbia then
NW over the gulf while weakening.

So expect to see chance or better PoPs to be across the panhandle
through through the end of the week and into the weekend. Best
chance of precipitation to fall of the southern pandhandle and
less of the northeast cornder of the panhandle. Temperatures to
stay near normal through week.

.AVIATION...VFR conditions that dominated most of the panhandle for
much of the day Tuesday will give rise to MVFR conditions as rain
and snow moves up from the south this evening and overnight into
Wednesday. Strong winds will continue at Skagway and coming down
Northern Lynn Canal overnight. LLWS will also show up this
afternoon and evening in the southern panhandle with the
precipitation pushing up associated with a shortwave trough.
