.SYNOPSIS FOR THE EASTERN GULF OF ALASKA...
A gale force low weakens and moves into the central Gulf through
the weekend. A general area of low pressure remains over the
Gulf through early next week with multiple weak lows moving into
the S Gulf.

bringing elevated winds and seas to the SE gulf. A broad area of
low pressure will persist over the gulf for the first half of
the week.

Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...The quiet weather for most of the panhandle will
come to an end starting this evening through tomorrow as a gale
force low works its way north through the gulf. Winds with this
low look to remain over the water with the exception of the
southern panhandle. Currently think that some of the gusts could
be strong enough so went ahead with strong wind headlines for
Ketchikan, Prince of Wales, and Annette Island for tonight and
tomorrow as the front moves through. Most of the precipitation
with this storm is not well organized so current thinking is that
most will be showery as it falls across SE AK. There is chance
that the precipitation does not make it to Skagway or Haines as
the low starts to turn to the west as the precipitation works its
way north. With the low starting to track to the west, it slows as
it does allowing for increased winds across the gulf to remain in
place over the water before heading farther west Saturday night
into Sunday.

.LONG TERM.../Sunday through Friday/...Low that was over the AK
Gulf Saturday will have retrograded westward and weakened by
Sunday. Another low, smaller and weaker, tracks west of Haida
Gwaii around this time. This low meanders about south of the
panhandle through mid week then drops into the N Pacific. For the
end of the week tracking next incoming system which as potential
to bring in strong winds and moderate rainfall.

Showers diminish through the week but still have bands rotating
over the areas from the gulf lows with isolated to scattered rain
shower into Tuesday. Gradient keeping relatively light northerly
winds and offshore flow along with afternoon seas breezes through
the week. Thursday should have most significant break in precip.
Temperatures remain below normal for April due to colder airmass
at 850 mb from BC and the AK interior. Solar heating from any breaks
in cloud cover will determine if temps reach into the low 50s,
otherwise high temps staying in the mid 40s.

GFS/ECMWF had good agreement early on which shifted the low in the
South Central Gulf a bit further north Sunday. Still fair model
alignment for the start of the week on location and extent of
showers, but overall bands start over the southern regions late
Sunday then push northward Monday into Tuesday.

.AVIATION...Main impact to aviation continues to be the volcanic
ash that is still tracking east across the North Pacific & Gulf of
Alaska. PIREPS from yesterday were filled with references to the
ash and 1 this morning mentioned ash south of Juneau. But many of
the pireps reported not seeing ash. From the AAWU, thinking is the
ash will continue to have an impact on aviation in SE AK for a
couple more days.

In other news, the next gale force front is moving over the eastern
Gulf and southern Panhandle. The front and associated precipitation
will move north through tonight, but CIGS and VSBY are expected to
remain at least MVFR. Probably the biggest impact from the front
will be more wind shear - focused mostly over the southern half of
the Panhandle.
