Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Mostly clear and cold over the North Slope, West Coast, and the
Western and portions of the Central Interior. Periods of snow
will develop this weekend and continue into early next week over
the Eastern Interior and Central Interior north of Fairbanks. Low
temperatures dropped well below zero in many of these locations
overnight and will remain below normal well into next week
especially in the Western and Central Interior. Snow and blowing
snow this afternoon over the eastern North Slope will diminish
late this evening. light snow will push north over the Eastern
Interior over the weekend, with cold but relatively quiet weather
pattern expected elsewhere into next week.

.DISCUSSION...

Models...The 07/12z model suite initialized well against the 12z
surface analysis and 12z upper air observations and verified well
against the 18z surface analysis. Spread between model families
as well as from run to run remains small with strong agreement in
the short range and reasonable spread noted well into the
extended range.

Aloft...At 500 mb an unseasonable cold 491 dam low pressure system
centered over Kotzebue Sound will remain in place over the weekend
and into early next week and will continue to anchor a strong and
cold longwave trough over Western and Central Alaska well into
next week. As a result, cold 850mb temperatures around -20 to -30C are
expected over the Western North Slope, Western Interior and West
Coast. 850mb temperatures generally around -10 to -20C will be in
place for the Central and Eastern Interior. The placement of this
low will continue being an open door for shortwaves to move from
south to north through the Interior through early next week. Strong
ridging will remain over the Bering Sea into next week.

Surface...A 974 mb low in the Gulf of Alaska will move north and
east with several surges of snow moving north and west into the
Easter and Central Interior through the weekend. Storm total
snowfall of 4 to 8 inches through Monday are expected from
Northway to Chicken to Circle to near Cold Foot with the heaviest
snow accumulations near Chicken. High pressure ridge will remain
over the Western Interior and and West Coast into early next week.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Generally quiet weather over the next several days with some areas
of light snow or flurries along the coast and generally mostly
clear skies in the Western Interior. Much below normal
temperatures will continue into early nest week. Low temperatures
tonight will be in the single digits below in the YK Delta to the
20s below north of the Yukon River. High temperatures on Saturday
will be in the single digits below to the single digits above.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...
Snow and blowing snow currently over the Eastern Arctic Slope this
afternoon will diminish this evening as winds diminish and snow
moves northwest over the icepack. Snowfall will be light with
accumulations generally less than one inch. Winds around Barter
Island with gusts to nearly 35 mph this evening will diminish by
midnight. Chilly temperatures will persist for most of the North
Slope over the weekend and into early next week. Low temperatures
tonight will be in the 20 to near 30 below inland and in the teen
and 20s below along the coast. High temperatures tomorrow will be
in the single digits to teens below.

Central and Eastern Interior...
A series of weak fronts will bring periods of snow over much of
the Central and Eastern Interior beginning Saturday night near
Fairbanks and will continue into Monday morning along the ALCAN
border. Snowfall totals trough Monday morning will generally be in
the 1 to 4 inch range however a band of heavier snowfall will
extend from near Northway to Chicken to Central to Coldfoot to
near Atigun Pass. Storm total snowfall in these areas will be in
the 4 to 8 inch range. Storm total snowfall from Saturday evening
to Monday morning in the Fairbanks area is expected to be in the 2
to 4 inch range, however the higher terrain north and east of
Fairbanks can expect 4 to 6 inches through Monday morning.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

.HYDROLOGY...Rivers remain mostly ice cover, but overflow and
open leads have been reported on many of the rivers. There are no
significant concerns at this time, but caution should be used
near rivers.
