Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A strong cold front over Interior Alaska this morning will
continue to sweep south to the Alaska Range and west into the
Western Interior today and over the West Coast tonight. This
front will bring light snow and blowing snow with windy and much
colder temperatures through the weekend and into early next week
for much of Northern Alaska. The cold conditions will last into
Tue, with a warmup beginning in the middle of next week.

.DISCUSSION...

Models...The 22/00z model suite initialized well against the 00z
surface analysis and upper air observations and verified well
against the 06z surface analysis. Model spread is minimal into
the middle of next week but begins to increase rapidly after the
middle of next week with the break down and transition from Omega
Block pattern. Well below normal temperatures are expected over
Northern Alaska in to the middle of next week before a transition
to southerly flow pattern develops by late next week. As is
typical with blocked flow the transition in the models to
unblocked flow is often depicted several days too soon. Confidence
in extended period model solutions remains low at this time.

Upper levels and Analysis...At 500 mb an Omega block with a 567
dam high pressure located near Wrangel Island and upper level low
one located near Banks Island and the other over the Western
Bering Sea will dominate the weather pattern over Northern Alaska
well into next week. A strong shortwave is diving south and west
over the Central and Eastern Interior this morning helping to
push unseasonably cold airmass south and west over Northern
Alaska. As the front pushes south and west expect light snow over
the Central and Eastern Interior and blowing snow especially over
higher terrain in these areas. Only flurries are expected to
accompany the front as it moves south and west into the Western
Interior and West Coast. Strong northeast wind gusts to 30mph in
the valleys and to 40 mph over the higher terrain is expected for
much of Northern Alaska as the cold airmass settles into place
this weekend. Temperatures will be 20 to 30 degrees below seasonal
normals through the weekend and into Tuesday in Northern Alaska.

Central and Eastern Interior...Expect slight snow over the
Central and Eastern Interior this weekend, Expect 1-4 inches this
weekend in most areas with heaviest amounts east of Fairbanks, and
4-7 inches southeast of Delta Junction with up to 10 inches along
north slopes of the the Eastern Alaska Range. Winter Weather
Advisories have been issued for all of the Central and Eastern
Interior and the Eastern Alaska Range for light snow and blowing
snow. Northeast winds will gusts to 30 mph continue to develop
this morning over most of the Eastern and Central Interior this
morning especially over higher terrain and are expected to
continue into Monday with periods of blowing snow. High
temperatures today will be in the teens in the Yukon Flats to
lower 30s near the Alaska Range. Low temperatures tonight will
drop into the single digits below zero in the Yukon Flats to the
single digits above elsewhere with wind chills dropping to 10 to
20 below especially in windiest locations.

West Coast and Western Interior...The Western Interior will see
northeast winds increasing to 15 gusting to 25 mph today as a
strong from moves south and west out of the Central Interior.
Winds will continue to increase on Sunday gusting 30 to 40 mph,
especially over higher terrain. Temperatures will drop behind the
front with little or no snow accumulation expected. The front will
bring increasing winds over the West Coast Sunday night and Monday.
High temperatures today will be in the 30s in the Western
Interior, in the 20s near Kotzebue Sound and in the lower 40s in
the YK Delta. Tonight temperatures will drop into the single
digits and teens. High temperatures on Sunday will be mostly in
the 20s and teens.

North Slope and Brooks Range...Snow will be diminishing today over
the Eastern North Slope and Brooks Range, however strong north
winds gusting to 40 mph are expected to continue into Monday
Morning. Expect reduced visibility and drifting snow to diminish
on Monday as winds diminish. Expect another inch of snow over the
North Slope east of Utqiagvik that will taper off about midnight
tonight. Expect decreasing clouds over the Western North Slope
today and over the Eastern North Slope late tonight. Gusty east to
northeast winds will continue over the North Slope into Monday.
High temperatures today will be zero to single digits above while
low temperatures tonight will drop into the single digits and
teens below zero.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

.FIRE WEATHER...Heavy snow pack remains over the area so no fire
weather concerns at this time.

.HYDROLOGY...Rivers and lakes remain ice covered, with areas of
overflow and and open leads. Caution should be used when
traveling on rivers or lakes. Temperatures falling well below
normal this weekend remaining below freezing through the middle
of next week. This extended cold is expected to cause break up to
be up to be 4-7 days later than normal this year. The chance of
break up and snow melt flooding are above normal this spring over
Eastern Alaska with the continued cold temperatures and above
normal snowpack. The latest breakup information is available at
