.SYNOPSIS...
An arctic front over the NW Arctic will slowly shift southeast and
bring rather cold air to the West Coast and Western Interior.
Light snow flurries will grace the remainder of the Mainland for
the next two days before exiting. A deep low over the NPAC will
move into the Gulf of AK and merge with the arctic trough over the
Bering Strait, bringing moderate snowfall and blowing snow to the
West Coast and Western Interior this weekend. South winds through
the AK Range and easterly winds north of the AK Range will also
increase in response to the Gulf storm.

.DISCUSSION...

Upper Levels and Analysis...
There is a 495 dam arctic low over the Chukchi Sea which is acting
as an anchor low for the synoptic scale flow pattern. There is a
ripping polar Pacific jet well to the south with a powerful low
forming along the left exit of that jet southeast of Kamchatka.
That low is currently around 977 mb. An occluded low is now
sitting over the N Gulf Coast with that center around 982 mb. Over
the Interior, there are several ripples of weak energy rotating
northeast along a stationary arctic boundary. Light snow is
falling along this diffuse boundary. Several inches has been
squeezed out over parts of the Upper Koyukuk Valley with a report
of 3.9" at Bettles.

Model Discussion...
The models are in fair agreement overall, and very good agreement
with the general large scale synoptic pattern. There is much
better agreement with a shortwave trough expected to traverse the
E Interior today and tonight, which will bring light snowfall to
that region. After that, a deep Pacific low will merge with an
arctic trough out west which will bring accumulating snow and
blowing snow to the West Coast. A blend of models was favored for
this forecast to account for the above patterns.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Light snow continues along an diffuse arctic boundary, with a
report of 3.9" at Bettles today and this evening. Light snow
flurries are also occurring over the White Mtns and into
Fairbanks. Light snow will develop over the E Alaska Range and E
Interior today and tonight as yet another weak upper disturbance
passes over. This system will also bring another chance of light
snow to Fairbanks, although this chance looks better overall. The
system exits tonight and drifts over the Brooks Range with partial
clearing skies for Friday.

A deep low moving into the Gulf of AK will induce a strong
pressure gradient across the AK Range with rapidly increasing
Tanana Valley jet winds as well as southerly chinook winds through
the AK Range to 45 to 60+ mph beginning Friday. This will also
result in dry conditions until the next slight chance of snow
develops Sat night and Sunday as a front crosses the AK Range.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Temps are plummeting with a deep arctic air mass settling in over
the region. The cold spots are around the Selawik Valley where
temps are around -25 below F. North winds will advect the cold air
mass to the YK Delta with expected min temps into the teens to
near -20 F across the West Coast by tomorrow night. Expect ocean-
effect snow showers and periods of blowing snowfall over the Capes
and Points along with wind chills to near -40 F.

Attention turns to a front which will form over Bristol bay with
snowfall moving into the Lower Yukon late Friday and shifting
north and west through Saturday and Saturday night. This will also
tighten up the pressure gradient along the coast, with winds
ramping up to 25 to 35 mph gusting as high as 40 mph along the
coast. This will result in areas of widespread snowfall and
blowing snow, which will create travel difficulties this weekend.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Snow flurries and stratus and ice fog at times for the next few
days across the Arctic Coast. Light snow accumulations are
expected for the Brooks Range from Anaktuvuk Pass east for the
next couple days. Northeast winds and cold wind chills to near -40
F along with blowing snowfall will impact the far NW Arctic
Saturday and Sunday as a strong front shifts north.

Extended Forecast Days 4-7...
The extended period will feature a deep arctic trough digging into
the Bristol Bay region and extending into the Gulf of AK with deep
south flow over the E Interior as a strong ridge aloft builds over
W Canada. It looks messy at this juncture as deep Pacific lows
will be ejecting off the left exit of a powerful Pacific jet
stream. The bottom line is it looks like several chances for
snowfall out west and possibly over the Arctic Coast with periods
of clouds and downslope flow across the Alaska Range. Temps are
warmer over the Interior Sunday with chinook flow. Temps looks
seasonable thereafter as the arctic front shifts inland again from
the south.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Northeast winds will increase Friday night and persist into the
weekend over higher elevations of the Steese, Elliott, and Dalton
Highways. Wind gusts up to 40 mph combined with loose snow on the
ground will result in areas of blowing and drifting snow.
Visibility will likely be reduced and may result in difficult
travel conditions along highway sections above treeline. This
includes Gobblers Knob and Finger Mountain on the Dalton Highway,
Eagle and Twelvemile Summits on the Steese Highway, and Ptarmigan
Pass on the Elliott Highway.

...Snow, Blowing Snow, and Cold Wind Chills This Weekend...

Cold arctic air will move south from the NW Arctic over the West
Coast this weekend. Strong north winds gusting as high as 40 mph
will accompany the cold air Saturday night and Sunday, which will
bring areas of blowing snow and reduced visibility along with
wind chills as cold as -40 F. Accumulating snowfall is also
expected with general snowfall accumulations of 2 to 5 inches, and
the heaviest snowfall over the Lower Yukon Valley, where 4 to 8
inches are possible from late Friday night through Sunday. The
snow, blowing snow, and cold wind chills will make for very
difficult travel conditions over the holiday weekend.
