Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
The active weather pattern continues across northern Alaska this
week. A large upper level trough remains the driving factor, as
shortwaves work through the flow. The next storm system moves
across the Bering Sea Tuesday into Wednesday, bringing another
round of strong and gusty winds to the West Coast, primarily from
the Bering Strait south. Strong northerly winds could lead to
elevated surf along north facing shorelines. Potentially heavy
snowfall possible across the West Coast and Western Interior
Tuesday evening into Wednesday, while in the Y-K Delta east to
McGrath there is a potential for a wintry mix of precip. Winter
Storm Watches have been issue. Snow will spread east northeast
across the Interior and Brooks Range through the week. Coastal
Flood and High Surf Advisories remain in effect into Tuesday.

.DISCUSSION...
Upper Levels and Analysis...
At 500 mb, an upper level trough encompasses much of mainland
Alaska with a closed 491 dam (decameter) low centered near Wrangel
Island. A series of shortwaves will slide east to northeast
across Northern Alaska through the week, while the closed low
weakens into a wave. A developing 523 dam low near the southern
tip of the Kamchatka Peninsula this afternoon will deepen to 503
dam as it moves east northeast to St Matthew Island by Wednesday
morning, weakening into an open wave. A 489 dam low developing in
the Chukchi Sea by Wednesday morning with a shortwave extending
south into the Bering Strait will absorb the remainder of the low
near St Matthew Island. The shortwave will slowly slide eastward
to the Western Interior through Thursday, bringing another round
of southwesterly flow aloft to the Interior.

At the surface, a 974 mb low is 200 NM northwest of Point Lay with a
front extending east offshore the Arctic Coast and another front
extending south through the Bering Strait. The low weakens to 978
mb as it lifts northeast tonight to be 275 NM north of Point Lay
by Tuesday morning, dragging the eastern extending front north
well away from the Arctic Coast and the southern front northeast
along the northwest Arctic Coast. By Wednesday morning, the low
weakens to 984 mb as it moves to be 250 NM north of Utqiagvik. By
Tuesday morning, the next low to impact the West Coast will be
moving into the western Bering Sea at 971 mb. The low deepens to
968 mb by Wednesday morning as it moves to be 175 NM northwest of
the Pribilof Islands and then weakens to 974 mb as it moves inland
to be near Anvik by Thursday morning. As this low approaches the
West Coast and moves onshore, it will push a series of fronts
across northern Alaska.

Models...The 13/12Z model solutions initialized well and are in
good agreement with the overall synoptic pattern through the short
term period. At the upper levels there are some differences in the
strength of the low off of the Kamchtka Peninsula, with the GFS
being the deepest and the NAM the weakest. As this feature moves
to the coast, the differences subside, but new differences arise
in the placement and strength of the low north of the Arctic Coast
by Wednesday afternoon. The surface lows associated with these
features show similar differences. Moving into forecast specifics,
leaned towards the NAMNEST for winds, as they were handling the
details the best. For pops, blended the AKSREF and the GFS for
coverage and placement, leaned away from the ECMWF, as it was too
fast with the pops moving into the Yukon Delta with the next
system. Overall, made only minor edits to the inherited forecast
package.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Southerly flow has developed across the region as a front continues
to move offshore. South to southwest winds of 10 to 20 mph will
prevail tonight for much of the area tonight, except for the
Western Arctic Coast where winds will be more westerly and in the
15 to 30 mph. On Tuesday, winds from Utqiagvik west will increase
to 20 to 30 mph and take on a more westerly component. Precip
tapers off tonight for eastern areas, while a front lingers near
the northwest Arctic Coast enhancing snow chances from Utqiagvik
southwest through Wednesday. Snowfall totals will generally be an
inch or less. Snow becomes more widespread late Wednesday as the
next front pushes snow north of the Brooks Range. Temperatures
cool through midweek as an upper level trough brings in colder
air.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Snow showers continue across the region this afternoon as a front
remains draped through the Bering Strait and troughing aloft
persists. Strong southwesterly onshore flow diminishes tonight.
With the approach of the next storm system Tuesday night into
Wednesday, winds take on a northerly component Tuesday night and
increase with winds along the coast in the 20 to 35 mph range with
gusts of 40 to 45 mph. The exception will be on St Lawrence
Island and the Bering Strait coasts where winds of 35 to 45 mph
are expected with gusts to 60 mph not out of the question. A mix
of precip will accompany this next system. Over the Y-K Delta and
into the Yukon Valley and perhaps as far north as Unalakleet and
as far east as McGrath a wintry mix is possible. Elsewhere snow is
expected to be the dominant precip type. Southwesterly flow aloft
advects plenty of moisture into the region allowing for heavy
snowfall across the Western Interior. There is the potential for a
wide swath of 7 to 10 inches of snow from Huslia to Anvik and
Winter Storm Watches have been issued for the Western Interior.
Elsewhere lesser snow amounts are anticipated.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Unsettled weather persists through the week. A wave moving over the
Interior tonight into Tuesday morning will bring another round of
snow. Snowfall accumulations will generally be 2 inches or less.
Flurries possible with any stratus that lingers. The next storm
system moves into the region on Wednesday bringing heavy snow to
areas west of the Dalton Highway and south to Tanana. Southwest
flow pushing moisture into the area will allow for as much as 7 to
10 inches of snowfall possible Wednesday into Thursday. Snowfall
amounts will be lighter east of the Dalton Highway. The Fairbanks
area and southeast face a tougher forecast as dry air associated
with a chinook in the Alaska Range pushes over the area. A slight
shift in wind/flow direction could allow for more or less snow to
fall. Chinook in the Alaska Range develops Tuesday night. South
winds expected to gust into the 50 to 60 mph range through the
passes, peaking midday Wednesday. High pressure building over the
Yukon southeast of Eagle Tuesday night into Wednesday will result
in southeast winds of 10 to 15 mph developing in Eagle and and
being channeled along the nearby Yukon River. These winds will
diminish Thursday as the high departs.

Extended forecast for days 4 to 7...
The extended period begins with a deepening upper level trough
moving across northern Alaska this weekend. This will bring cooler
temperatures to the region, getting closer to seasonal norms,
although this is only short-lived. As the trough exits, ridging
develops over the Bering Sea and slides eastward to the mainland
Monday. is poised to move in and strengthen across the state by
Monday, opening up the door to warming temperatures and precip for
the West Coast.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...See Coastal Flood
Advisories and High Surf Advisories for ongoing coastal flood
concerns. Winds will ramp up again out of the north Wednesday into
Thursday over the Bering Strait and Norton Sound and along the
Yukon Delta coast, bringing the potential for elevated surf along
north facing coastlines.
