.SYNOPSIS...
Fall is in the air across Alaska. Chiller nights but still sunny
enough days for a bit of warmth, enhanced by the gold leaves. A
front will move into the Interior today from the Gulf and bring
rain chances, but they will favor the Fortymile and White Mtns
north, with largely drier conditions across the Tanana Valley due
to downslope flow. Alaska Range gaps will also blow from the
south to 45 mph with blustery Interior northeast winds over higher
terrain. Slightly cooler and showery weather persists out west
with no notable coastal storm threats in the near future.

.DISCUSSION...

Upper Levels and Analysis...
There is a storm force low moving onshore across the N Gulf of AK.
There is a 530 dam upper low over the West Coast with light south
flow aloft across the AK Range. The low in the Gulf of AK is
approximately 990 mb. There is a 994 mb low over the YK Delta with
surface high pressure building along the Arctic Coast as a
shortwave trough lifts into the High Arctic. AK Range gap winds
have weakened as the low in the Gulf of AK has switched the
pressure gradient.

Model Discussion...
Models are in excellent agreement with no notable differences. A
blend of hi-res and ECMWF models was favored for this forecast.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Another cooler morning then clouds fill in and precip chances
increase as a Gulf front shift inland. Northeast winds will also
increase today over the higher terrain, with gusts to 30 mph.
There will also be a light Tanana Valley Jet gusting to 15 to 20
mph. Rain spreads over the Fortymile and White Mtns this morning
into the afternoon. The Tanana Valley may see a spritz of
rainfall, but it will mostly be on the drier side as usual for
this type of front. Rainfall up to 0.25 inches will be possible
over the south facing AK Range slopes, and areas northwest of the
White Mtns. Winds through the AK Range will also gust to 45 mph
tonight through Friday as the front shifts northward. The front
clears the Brooks Range with clearing, drying, and warming for
Saturday. Temps will likely shoot above the low 60s for Saturday
over some Interior lower elevation locations.

West Coast and Western Interior...
No changes in pattern with a low over the YK Delta setting up and
remaining in place, spreading showers and more light rainfall
over the region. More organized light rainfall develops Saturday
as a stronger low shifts through Bristol Bay. Temps are
seasonable but cooler for daytime highs. No coastal storm chances
for the West Coast for the immediate future with storms diving
through Bristol Bay.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
East to northeast winds redevelop as a high builds along the
coast. As usual this means bouts of fog and stratus over most of
the Arctic Coast from Utqiagvik east. A weakening front will
spread clouds and light rain over the Brooks Range with snow
elevations around 2500-3000 feet. The front weakens Saturday over
the Brooks Range with no notable weather thereafter as onshore
flow continues along most of the Arctic coast.

Extended Forecast Days 4-7...
The storm track remains over the Gulf of AK and NPAC with
weakening lows trying to move through the E Bering Sea. A trough
over the West Coast will bring some light precipitation chances
east Sunday night and Monday along with cooler temps after a
warmer day on Sunday. After that, another deep low moves through
the Gulf of AK midweek to late week. This low may bring some
precip chances into the Interior from the south since it will be
an atmospheric river associated with a strong NPAC ridge.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

.HYDROLOGY...
Rivers and streams draining the E Brooks Range into the Arctic
have seen 0.25 to 0.5 inches of rainfall over 24 hours. This may
result in some elevated water and fast flows for the next day or
so. Elsewhere, no concerns with rivers running mostly normal or
low.
