.SYNOPSIS...
Dense fog along the Bering Straight coast will continue to burn
off this afternoon as a low pressure system dissolves over the
Yukon Delta and high pressure builds over the region. Temperatures
will rise a few degrees today and warming will continue into
Friday, with some locations including Fairbanks nearing record
highs. Dry northeast winds over much of the Central and Eastern
Interior, low humidity levels, and above- normal temperatures
increase fire weather concerns today and tomorrow across
continental Alaska. Confidence continues to increase over fire
weather concerns on Friday and the Fire Weather Watches for the
Southeastern Interior have been upgraded to Red Flag Warnings.
Additionally, accelerated rates of snowmelt and runoff due to
warmer temperatures will continue to raise hydro concerns through
the forecast period. A Flood Warning for major flooding along the
Buckland River has been extended, wile a Flood Advisory and
several Flood Watches remain in effect along the Yukon River.

.DISCUSSION...

Forecast Models...
High-resolution ensembles continue to stay in good agreement for
today and Friday, but forecast confidence decreases moving into
next week with a large spread in the models. A low pressure system
will continue to dissolve today as high pressure builds in aloft
from both the east and west. As a deepening low slowly moves
towards the Aleutians from the Gulf of Alaska, a series of weak
easterly waves will advect moisture across the Southern Interior
which may initiate isolated shower and thunderstorm activity
between Saturday and Monday, with the best chances on Sunday east
of Fairbanks. A quasi-stationary low pressure system will likely
remain over the Aleutians in the long-range as a ridge axis may
try to rebuild towards the northwest. Mild temperatures are
expected to continue across the inland portions of the state with
periods of light precipitation possible.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Southwest flow aloft will usher in warmer temperatures today and
Friday across the Central and Eastern Interior, with roughly 10 to
15 degrees of warming through Friday. The NBM ensemble shows a
high chance (70 percent probability) of reaching or exceeding a
high temperature of 77 degrees in Fairbanks on Friday, potentially
tying or breaking the daily temperature record of 77 degrees set
in 2002. The warming temperatures will exacerbate snowmelt,
causing river rises and increasing localized flooding concerns.
Fire weather concerns are also heightened today and especially
Friday, as gusty and dry northeast winds and low relative humidity
values combined with the heat could cause rapid ignition, growth,
and spread of fires. While the chance of precipitation is minimal
across the Interior through the period, the best chance for
showers and thunderstorms will be Sunday along the eastern Alaska
Range and over the Eastern Interior.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Conditions along the West Coast will continue to slowly improve
today as a weakening low pressure system over the Yukon Delta
moves offshore. Breezy winds will increase over the Bering Sea
this afternoon and again on Friday, with low stratus and areas of
fog developing overnight along the coast. The Western Interior
will see roughly 8 to 12 degrees of warming by Friday and minimal
chances for precipitation, raising fire weather concerns along
the western Alaska Range. Increased warming continues to carry the
threat of ice jam and snowmelt flooding, with major flooding
occurring along the Buckland River.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Breezy southwest winds will continue today as a weak upper level
disturbance crosses the Arctic Coast. Breezy winds will continue
on into Friday as cloud cover decreases inland. Low stratus and
locally dense fog will persist along the coast with no
precipitation forecast through the forecast period as high
pressure and light winds prevail.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Hot, dry, and breezy conditions over the Central and Eastern
Interior and along and near the northern foothills of the Alaska
Range today and Friday are the main concern. Ridging building in
aloft from the Bering Sea and from the Yukon will limit
precipitation and will drive minimum relative humidity levels down
into the 30s and 20s between the Alaska Range and the Brooks
Range. The driest locations will be in the Yukon Flats, the
Fortymile Country, the Middle and Upper Tanana Valleys and along
the northern foothills of the Alaska Range this afternoon and
evening. Relative humidity levels will drop to similar levels on
Friday afternoon and evening in the same locations. Temperatures
will rise into the upper 60s to the lower 70s over the same areas
on Thursday and will nudge a few degrees warmer on Friday with
many locations in the Middle and Upper Tanana Valley and Fortymile
Country rising into the mid to upper 70s. Winds will be the key
factor with most locations reaching Red Flag Criteria for
Temperatures and Low Relative Humidities by falling just short of
Red Flag Criteria for winds. Gusty northeast winds will develop
over these areas on Friday with the wind criteria likely being met
in the above locations in addition to temperature and low
relative humidity levels. Fire Weather Watches have been upgraded
to Red Flag Warnings for Friday for these areas. Near Red Flag
conditions will likely occur in the areas mentioned above on
Saturday. Increased clouds and moisture will lower the threat on
Sunday.

Western Interior fire weather concerns will increase over the
next several days and in particular on Friday as meteorological
near Red Flag conditions begin to encroach into the eastern
portions of the Western Interior with temperatures in the lower
70s, minimum relative humidity levels dropping into the 20s and
northeast winds increasing to 10 to 15 mph on Friday.

.HYDROLOGY...
A Flood Warning for major ice jam flooding has been extended for
Buckland along the Buckland River, with reports that all roads are
covered in water to the point that travel is only possible by boat.
A Flood Watch has been issued for the Porcupine River and other
low- lying and flood- prone locations along the Porcupine River
from the Canadian border to Fort Yukon due to snowmelt flooding.
A second Flood Watch has been issued for the Yukon River for ice
jam flooding between Galena and Koyukuk, while a Flood Advisory
has been issued for the Yukon River between Tanana and the Nowitna
River.

Warming temperatures across the region today and tomorrow,
combined with a much above normal snowpack over higher
elevations, will continue to cause a significant increase in
snowmelt. Runoff into rivers south of the Brooks Range is causing
water levels to rise and breakup to begin on some rivers. Local
ice jams may form and result in elevated water levels. The
increased runoff may also cause smaller rivers and streams to rise
to bankfull levels or overbank in low lying areas.

People along rivers and streams should prepare for the
possibility of high water levels this week due to ice breakup and
snowmelt runoff. River access points and gravel bars will likely
be covered with water along with increased debris in rivers.
