Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
With afternoon heating and upper level support from multiple
embedded waves, more convection is expected this afternoon and
evening, across much of the interior of Alaska and again on
Friday. Meanwhile, with high pressure in place north of Alaska,
widespread stratus and fog is lingering along the north coast.
Winds will become gusty over higher terrain of the northern
Interior Friday into Saturday.

.DISCUSSION...
Aloft...High pressure aloft remains over the Arctic while a 539
dam low remains over the Bering and low pressure in the Gulf of
Alaska as well. Numerous weak upper level waves are rotating
between these systems and drifting across the interior. While
weak, they are strong enough to provide enough energy for
widespread convective development through Friday.

Central and Eastern Interior..
Dense smoke expected again this morning across the Central Interior,
then with afternoon heating and upper level support from multiple
embedded waves, more convection is expected this afternoon and
evening, across much of the interior of Alaska and again on
Friday. Temperatures will generally range from the lower 70s to
lower 80s with warmest temperatures towards Eagle. Low level winds
will become gusty over higher terrain of the northern Interior
Friday into Saturday. This could impact the fires across the
Interior, will continue to monitor.

West Coast and Western Interior...
An upper level low in the Bering will continue to cause numerous
showers and stratus along the coast. Scattered showers and
thunderstorms inland on Thursday and again on Friday. Low
to mid 60s near the coast and mid to upper 70s inland through
Friday.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
A low level jet sitting between high pressure to the north and an
interior trough continues to bring gusty winds along the north
coast. Despite the mixing winds, it continues to advect stratus
onshore and visibilities will continue to remain low in coastal
areas.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.
