Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A warming trend will continue with near or just above normal
temperatures is expected across Interior and Northern Alaska
today through early next week. Low stratus and fog continues on
the north slope. Weak southerly chinook winds with gusts to near
30 mph in the eastern Alaska range through today and diminish
tonight. Winds will return to the Alaska Range Friday night and
continue into Saturday. A weather front will push into the Bering
on Sat bringing a rain/snow mix and strong winds.

.DISCUSSION...

Upper Levels and Analysis...
A shortwave trough continues to push north and east across the
Brooks range this evening and will exit to the northeast tonight.
Ridging continues to build over the Interior as upper low over
the Western Bering Sea pushes north and east over the Bering
Strait on Saturday. A second upper level low in the Western Bering
Sea pushes south and east into the Northern Gulf of Alaska on
Sunday. Warming conditions will persist over the Interior and
northern Interior through the week. Ridge will break down over the
west coast on Saturday as a weather system moves into the western
Bering.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Gusty south gap winds through the AK Range will continue into the
30 mph range through this evening, diminishing tonight and
Friday. Winds will increase again through the Alaska Range Friday
night and continue into Saturday. A warming trend to near or just
above normal temperatures is expected across Interior and
Northern Alaska and will continue into early next week. Not much
in the way of showery activity until Friday afternoon and evening,
especially over the Eastern Interior where showers will be more
widespread. High temps pushing into the mid 60s Thursday and
Friday. Continued warm into the weekend and early next week.

West Coast and Western Interior...Light onshore flow has produced
areas of low stratus and fog especially along the Kotzebue Sound.
The low stratus and fog will likely develop again tonight and
Friday. Low temperatures tonight will be in the teens and 20s
along the coast and mainly 20s inland. High temperatures tomorrow
will be in the upper 30s to low 40s near the coast and in the low
to mid 50s inland. A weather front will push into the Bering
Saturday afternoon into Sunday bringing a rain/snow mix along with
strong southerly winds.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Low stratus and periods of dense fog will plague the Arctic coast
through the rest of the week and into the weekend. Weak disturbances
aloft will support isolated/scattered rain and snow showers over
the Eastern Brooks Range through Friday AM. Low temperatures
tonight will be in the teens and 20s. High temperatures on Friday
will be in the 20s and 30s along the coast and into the 40s inland
and along the foothills of the Brooks Range.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Snowpack continues to diminish at low elevations of Tanana
Valley, however heavy snowpack remains in most other areas.

South winds will remain breezy near the Alaska Range today. Winds
will diminish Thursday night and remain light Friday morning.
South winds will increase Friday night and continue into Saturday
along the Alaska Range.

.HYDROLOGY...
An ice jam is occurring along the Mosquito Fork at the Taylor
Highway. The flood advisory has been upgraded to a warning. See
Warning for more information.

Flood watch remain in effect for the Yukon River at Eagle from
Thursday through Sunday due to an ice jam that formed
down river from Eagle.

A warming trend to near or just above normal temperatures is
expected across Interior and Northern Alaska. Highs are expected
to rise to the low to mid 60s by late week and the weekend. These
warming temperatures, combined with a much above normal snowpack
over most of the Interior, will cause a significant increase in
snowmelt. Runoff into rivers south of the Brooks Range later this
week and next week will cause water levels to rise and breakup to
begin on many rivers. The increased runoff may also cause smaller
streams and creeks to rise to bankfull levels later this week.

The chances of breakup and/or snow melt flooding are above normal
this spring over eastern Alaska, with river breakup running a
week or more later than normal.

People along Interior rivers and streams should prepare for the
possibility of high water levels this week and next week due to
ice breakup and snowmelt runoff.
