Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Light snow is moving through the Eastern Interior and will
gradually come to an end tonight, although flurries will linger
into the weekend. Out west, offshore winds will continue with
chances for light snow increasing across the Yukon Delta tonight
through Saturday, with likely blowing and drifting snow for Saint
Lawrence Island. Along the arctic coast, east winds prevail with
wind chills dropping into the -50 F range.

.DISCUSSION...

Upper Levels and Analysis...
There is a 505 dam arctic trough digging southwest across the
high arctic toward Prudhoe Bay. There is a 542 dam upper level
blocking high north of Wrangel Island. There is a 510 dam complex
low over the Bering Sea with the associated front moving into the
YK Delta. There is a mobile shortwave trough centered over the
Central and Eastern Interior, and is moving east. At the surface,
there is a dominant 1040 mb high over the high arctic with a 987
mb low near Saint Matthew Island. There is also a surface inverted
trough stretching from the Alaska Range to the Tanana Valley. The
arctic front stretches across the Brooks Range.

Model Discussion...
The models are in very good agreement with the large scale pattern
as well as the sensible weather impacts as we head through the
weekend. A blend of all models was favored although the NAM nest
was favored for high resolution wind details.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Light snow will continue over the Eastern Interior through this
evening than taper off to flurries. Another shot of snow showers
will move across the Interior Friday evening and Saturday as a
weak disturbance passes over, but accumulations will be light.
South winds aloft and an increasing gradient over the AK Range
develop Sat afternoon with partial clearing for Sunday.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Offshore winds will prevail with gusty east to north winds for the
normal locales. A weak front riding over the offshore winds will
bring light snow to the YK Delta tonight and over Saint Lawrence
Island by tomorrow evening. Expect light accumulations less than a
couple inches, but falling snow will reduce visibility in
northeast winds over Saint Lawrence Island. Light snow will move
as far north as the Seward Peninsula and into the Interior Friday
evening and Saturday, but it will be spotty and very light.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
An arctic trough will bring colder air to the North Slope along
with persistent northeast winds, strongest over the West Arctic.
Periods of blowing snow will also occur from Point Lay to
Wainwright where the highest gusts will occur into the 30 mph
range. Wind chills will be the other main hazard with values into
the -55 F range or so.

Extended Forecast Days 4-7...
The extended forecast looks pretty typical for late winter, with
arctic troughing over the North Slope, northeast winds over the
Mainland/West Coast, and a storm track well to the south over the
NPAC and Bering Sea. Cold anomalies will be in place over the
North Slope, with generally dry weather besides periodic snow
showers/light snow over the southern Mainland as Gulf lows weaken
and try to move inland. Some of the cold anomalies will filter
into the valleys over the Mainland for next week with lows
dropping slightly below climo.
