Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Active pattern will continue over Northern Alaska with an exiting
low pressure over Northeast Alaska brining and end to the light
snow over the Interior, however the cold airmass the moved east into
the Interior yesterday will push back to the south and west and
will bring another round of blowing snow and low visibilities
over the Interior Highway summits and low wind chill values to
windy areas. Area that remain under mostly clear skies and light
winds in the Central and Western Interior will drop into the 30s
below. A strong pressure gradient will develop along the West
Coast and Western Interior today and will produce very cold wind
chill values especially along the coast as the very cold airmass
over the interior will be the source region for strong off shore
winds. A second snow event is expected to develop over the
southern Interior Monday night and Tuesday, however differences in
the models continue to make pinning down the exact areas of
heaviest snowfall problematic at best.

.DISCUSSION...

Upper Levels and Analysis...
At 500 mb a 508 dam low is centered over the Eastern Brooks Range
this morning. This upper level low will drop south and west today
to be located over Kotzebue Sound by Tuesday morning as an upper
level ridge builds back over the Eastern Interior. The upper level
low will continue to drop south and west into the Northern Bering
Sea by Wednesday and will merge with another week upper level low
moving north out of the Northern Pacific. The merged upper level
low will wobble around the Northern Bering Sea Wednesday before
weakening in place. There is considerable model spread beyond
Wednesday of next week with a general trend of the weather pattern
shifting from being dominated by an cold upper level low over
Alaska to a warm upper level Ridge. This should produce warmer and
drier conditions over the Central and Eastern Interior while the
West Coast and Western Interior will likely be in a pattern where
storms move through every few days with rounds of precipitation
and winds.

Models...
The 22/00z model suite initialized well against the 00z surface
analysis and upper air observations and verified well against the
06z surface analysis. Model spread both between model families and
from model run to model run is minimal in the short range and
reasonable into Wednesday of next week. Beyond Wednesday there is
considerable spread between the models with low forecast
confidence beyond Wednesday. A concensus if you can call it that
indicates a transition from a cold unsettled weather pattern
under an Arctic trough over Northern Alaska to a pattern
dominated by a strong upper level ridge over Northern Alaska with
strong shortwaves moving north and east into the Bering Sea and
West Coast of Alaska with periods of precipitation and winds.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Snow continues to diminish over the northeast Interior with mostly
clear skies found over most of the Central and Eastern Interior.
Temperatures continue to drop as skies clear and winds diminish
with most locations in the 20s and 30s below. Winds will pick up
again later this afternoon over highway summits with bitterly cold
wind chill values expected as well as low visibilities in blowing
snow. Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect for these areas
for low wind chills and blowing snow. A 969 mb low moving north
out of the Northern Pacific to near Cold Bay will bring another
round of snow to the Alaska Range and Southern Interior on Monday
and into Tuesday. Exact track of this storm and where the heaviest
snowfall will occur is still problematic at this time. In general
we are expecting snowfall in the 1 to 3 inch range south and east
form Arctic Village to McGrath with a heavier corridor of snow
expected in the 2 to 4 inch range from McGrath to Fairbanks. 4 to
6 inches are expected in the Alaska Range. Very strong winds are
expected to develop in the Eastern Alaska Range with low
visibilities in blowing snow expected. A Winter Weather Advisory
for snow, blowing snow, and low wind chill values has been issued
for the Eastern Alaska Range beginning Noon on Monday and
continuing into Tuesday.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Cold temps and strong northeast will persist through Tuesday.
This will keep the region dry and cold, with wind chills dropping
into the -55F range. Gusts will approach 60 mph over Saint
lawrence Island so blowing and drifting is likely, The Wind Chill
Advisories form the West Coast and Western Interior have been
extended into Monday. The lone exception to the dry weather will
be near McGrath where accumulating snow develops along the arctic
front Monday and persist into Tuesday, where several inches of
snowfall is possible.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
The arctic boundary over the eastern North Slope continues to push
east today, Blowing and drifting snow continue east of Prudhoe
Bay where the strongest westerly pressure gradient will be
observed. The winter weather advisory will remain in effect until
this evening. The long duration snowfall will continue on and off
through Tuesday with generally 1 to 2 inches expected south and
east of Prudhoe Bay.

Extended Forecast Days 4-7...
Wednesday the arctic low will be located over the Western
Interior with snow over the Central/Western Interior and southerly
warmer flow over the Eastern Interior. The arctic trough
eventually weakens and moves north. Light snow will move east and
north with it, and this will promote a very active pattern in the
Bering Sea, the West Coast and Western Interior next week. Model
concensus for next week if you can call it a concensus indicate a
a very busy weather pattern setting up for the Northern Bering
Sea and West Coast as a series of storms to move in from the
south. This means warmer and stormier and active weather, with the
active weather eventually moving inland late next week.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.
