Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
The weather front that moved northwest over the Interior on
Sunday brought warmer air, clouds, wind, and some areas of light
snow. As a result, we have seen a significant warmup during the
past 24 hours across the Interior and eastern Arctic, while
readings over the west coast are nearly the same or tad cooler in
a few locations. The most notable warming occurred over the
central and eastern Interior where sharp temperature inversions
ended. Some valley locations are 20 to 35 degrees warmer than this
time yesterday. Much of the forecast area is above zero except
for a few random cold pockets that are just below zero. Gusty
winds are resulting in areas of blowing snow and reduced
visibility through Brooks Range passes, across the eastern Arctic
Coast, and from Pt Hope south through the Bering Strait. As the
pressure gradient gradually slackens today, the trend will be for
diminishing winds and improving visibility by this evening.

.DISCUSSION...
Low pressure aloft centered over the Alaska Peninsula will remain
nearly stationary as it weakens through Tuesday night, before
sliding west and dissipating. A ridge of high pressure extending
north through British Columbia and the Yukon Territory will
persist through at least Wednesday or longer. This pattern will
continue to bring weak southeast flow aloft to much of mainland
Alaska through mid-week spinning clouds, warmer air, and a few
bouts of snowfall inland. The west coast of Alaska will be more
influenced by cold high pressure over far east Russia with cooler,
low level northerly winds persisting into mid-week.

Forecast models are in generally good agreement with the main
synoptic features for the next several days. There are some minor
differences with the placement, extent, and amount of light snow
expected over the Interior and Seward Peninsula. The NAM/ECMWF
solutions had a better handle than the GFS on the snowfall the
past 24 hours. We will again lean toward the higher chances of
snow advertised by the NAM/ECMWF that are expected to develop over
the eastern Interior and Seward Peninsula this afternoon and
evening. On Tuesday, another band of snow develops over the west
coast as another disturbance rotates inland. Beyond that, the best
chances for some light snow showers appears to be over the west
coast or Arctic coast through Thursday. After Tuesday as the
southeast flow aloft weakens, temperatures will gradually fall
simply due to the long nights and radiational cooling.

Central and Eastern Interior...Winds are diminishing over
Interior summits and in Delta Junction and will continue to do so
today. That being said, lighter east winds associated with the
Tanana Valley Jet in Delta Junction will persist the next couple
days but generally gusting in the 20 to 30 mph range and sub-
advisory level. Southerly gap winds 30 to 45 mph through Alaska
Range passes will pickup this morning and continue through Tuesday
afternoon. As for snow, lingering light snow north of the Yukon
River to the Brooks Range will taper off through this evening with
less than an inch accumulation. Another area of snow develops
this afternoon from the eastern Alaska Range to the Fortymile
Country with 1 to 2 inches possible. Scattered clouds on Tuesday
and Wednesday and generally dry with a very slow cooling.

West Coast and Western Interior...A broad swath of north winds
gusting 30 to 50 mph from Pt Hope south through the Bering Strait
and extending to the Yukon Delta will gradually diminish this
afternoon into tonight. Low visibility in blowing snow at Pt Hope
and through the Bering Strait should improve by early afternoon
as the winds diminish. The only fly in the ointment is a band of
snow that moves over the Bering Strait this afternoon that could
continue low visibilities with the addition of falling snow. Light
snow will develop from the Yukon Delta north to the Kotzebue
Sound on Tuesday with around 1 inch possible. Temperatures will
warm a few degrees in most locations over the next couple of days
with the least pronounced warming through the Bering Strait.

North Slope and Brooks Range...Easterly winds gusting 50 to 60 mph
along the eastern Arctic Coast combined with some light snow is
creating blizzard conditions at Kaktovik. East winds 30 to 45 mph
will also bring a brief period of low visibility in blowing snow
as far west as Nuiqsut, but not nearly as severe as Kaktovik.
South winds gusting up to 30 mph through Brooks Range passes could
reduce visibility in blowing snow this morning. Winds will
diminish in all areas by this evening with improving conditions.
Relatively quiet Tuesday and Wednesday with east winds 15 to 20
mph along the coast and light and variable inland. Some patchy
fog and few flurries along the coast.

Extended Forecast Days 4-7...
Relatively quiet with no significant cold air or snowfall as the
storm pattern remains well to the south. A gradual cooling continues
into next weekend, but nothing dramatic, just near normal temperatures.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.
