Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

A broad but deep longwave trough over Western Alaska and the
Eastern Bering Sea will continue to deepen and assume a negative
tilt as the anchoring upper level low complex drifts slowly west
over Eastern Siberia through the next several days. Various upper
shortwaves embedded within the trough continue to pinwheel with
the flow and around the low. One shortwave is currently located
over Southcentral Alaska and will continue to exit to the north
and east. Another shortwave is diving south over the Pribilof
Islands and will continue to dive to the south and east tonight
and Wednesday. A third shortwave south of Unalaska will deepen as
it moves northeast into the Western Gulf of Alaska tonight and
Wednesday.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

The 12/12z model suite initialized well against the 12z surface
analysis and upper air observations and verified well against the
18z surface analysis. The models remain in decent agreement with
the larger synoptic features with a deep but broad upper level
trough over Western Alaska assuming a negative tilt and deepening
over the next several days. The main model differences in the
short term continue to be the evolution of the track and strength
of various upper level shortwaves across both domains, and in
particular, the track and strength of a Gale force surface low
pressure system progged to deepen and track north and east through
the northern Pacific and Central Gulf of Alaska on Wednesday and
Thursday before making landfall just East of Cordova Thursday
afternoon. By the end of the week a very broad area of high
pressure expands slightly northward from the North Pacific and
into the longwave trough pattern currently in place.

.AVIATION...
PANC...Light winds and VFR conditions will continue through late
this evening. Showers become increasingly more likely later this
evening, and ceilings lowering to MVFR by late evening.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3:
This afternoon through Friday afternoon)...

Increasingly active weather is in the forecast for Southcentral
Alaska in the coming days. Today's rain showers continue through
tomorrow afternoon as a shortwave trough moves in from the Gulf of
Alaska. There will also be a potential for isolated thunderstorms
this afternoon and evening as colder air moves in aloft in
concert with the shortwave.

By Wednesday afternoon, a potent shortwave and its associated
surface low will move across the Gulf and into Southcentral
Alaska. With the low deepening as it moves across the Gulf,
mariners will likely see winds to gale force, with the potential
for high-end gales (and perhaps even storm force winds) near the
Kayak Island/Cape Suckling area on Wednesday evening.
Unfortunately, much uncertainty remains with the track and
evolution of this low due to large model spread and poor run-to-
run consistency. There's high confidence in gales along the north
Gulf coast, but lower confidence in gales for the offshore marine
zones due to uncertainty with how tight the low circulation will
be. Differences in the track and evolution of the low will also
play a part in rain totals. The highest rain totals are expected
in Prince William Sound given the placement of the front and
persistent onshore flow. However, there is lower confidence in
exact rain amounts at this time because there's uncertainty
regarding the westward extent of the rainfall and how quickly the
low will exit the region. Overall, while the general picture is
that the low moving into Southcentral from Wednesday through
Thursday will bring rain and stronger winds, there is lower
confidence in the exact details.

Looking ahead to Friday, the entrance of another gale force low
into the Gulf spells another round of windy conditions and steady
rain.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA/BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days
1 through 3: Today through Friday afternoon)...

An unsettled pattern continues for Southwest Alaska, the Alaska
Peninsula (AKPEN), and the islands of the Bering Sea. The main
driver for this pattern is a large upper-level trough and embedded
lows rotating around it. This slow moving feature is expected to
remain over the Bering Sea and western Alaska throughout the
short-term period.

This afternoon, a weak low pressure lingers over Bristol Bay
bringing scattered showers to the coastal Southwest into Wednesday
morning before weakening. Ridging will build overnight for the
central Bering.

There will likely be a very brief break in the precipitation
Wednesday before the next system arrives to coastal Southwest
Thursday. Multiple shortwaves will move southward along the west
side of the Bering Sea to form a weak frontal system over western
Aleutian Chain Wednesday morning. Accompanying this front will be
a warm air push, rain, and gusty winds to small craft advisory
strength. This system sweeps the remaining Aleutian Islands,
including the Pribilofs to coastal Southwest by Thursday. However,
the warm air push only makes it as far as the eastern Aleutian
Chain, before it nudges farther southward into the North Pacific.

Showers linger across Southwest and the AKPEN through at least
Friday. Meanwhile, another system south of Kamchatka passes over
the western and central Aleutians by Friday afternoon. Uncertainty
remains high on the northward extent of its expected
precipitation.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Saturday through
Tuesday)...

An active pattern is forecast to develop over the Gulf of Alaska
and Southcentral through the end of the week, and persist into
the weekend. Despite subtle differences in timing, strength and
placement of each forecast low pressure system, guidance is in
good agreement with the overall synoptic pattern. A series of lows
are forecast to move into the Gulf of Alaska and onshore of the
Gulf coast. Preceding the long term period, the first in a series
of lows will pivot into Prince William Sound Thursday morning. A
second upper low will move into the Gulf Friday into Saturday,
with a third low Saturday into Sunday. Confidence in track and
timing goes down with each low and the third low Saturday into
Sunday may pass Southcentral entirely while moving toward
Southeast Alaska. Regardless, multiple rounds of precipitation are
anticipated for Southcentral. This will lead to cooler
temperatures and potentially more termination dust for the
mountains.

Further west, the Bering Sea will remain under the influence of a
longwave trough. Isolated to scattered shower chances are
forecast across the Bering. However, the position of the jet
stream aloft will favor low pressure systems tracking along the
Aleutian Chain. Model guidance hints at least two upper lows
tracking through the Aleutians. The first will start the long term
period on Friday with a round of widespread rain forecast for the
Aleutians. Of greater interest will be the development of another
upper low Sunday into Monday. A large Kamchatka low is forecast
to dig into the Western Aleutians late Saturday. At the same time
the remnants of a West Pacific tropical system (currently Invest
93W) will be tracking south of the Western Aleutians. The GFS in
particular has the remnants picked up by the Kamchatka low, with
significant amplification of the low occurring over the Central
Aleutians. The potential for heavy rain, gales and potential storm
force winds will exist under this scenario, with the low
continuing into the Eastern Aleutians and Southwest Alaska by
Monday.
