Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

The forecast area is split between a developing polar jet over the
Brooks Range and Northwest Alaska and a weak subtropical jet south
of the Aleutian Chain. A weak surface low is currently south of
the Alaska Peninsula, bringing variable winds and light rain to
the area. Farther to the north, westerly winds associated with a
low over the high arctic are advecting moisture, cloud cover and
cooler temperatures into Southwest. Over Southcentral, the clouds
are kept at bay for the most part by the Aleutian and Alaskan
Ranges. To the far west, clouds are moving in from a low near
Kamchatka and a gale force front. Areas of fog is reported near
St Paul Island and Iliamna but along the northern Gulf coast,
such as Cordova and Homer, are under low stratus.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models continue to be in good agreement in the short term with
zonal flow over mainland continuing through the weekend.
Differences in position, track and strength of a series of weak
low pressure systems moving through the Aleutians and into the
northern Gulf of Alaska emerge in the model suite Monday and
Tuesday of next week.

.AVIATION...
PANC...VFR conditions and light winds will persist into Saturday
morning. There is a slight chance for fog, but anything that
develops is expected to be patchy.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3:
Tonight through Monday)...

A very quiet pattern in place is set to persist through the start
of next week, with much of the outlook area expected to remain dry
over the weekend in spite of steady increase in cloud cover. A
small, weak surface low entering the southwest corner of the gulf
will continue to drift east tonight into Saturday and briefly
weaken the ridge sitting in place this afternoon across
Southcentral. The track of this low continues to shift south
compared to earlier indications, so much so that much of Kodiak
Island may end up dodging most of the areas of light rainfall
following the low as it passes well to the southeast tonight. A
weak surface trough drifting south of Prince William Sound will
pivot northwest on Saturday around the Gulf low as it continues
towards the eastern Gulf, and this may help focus a few areas of
light rain along the coast. Otherwise, expect another day of at
least partial sun away from the coastline with little chance for
rain aside from a stray shower or two over the mountains.

Upper ridging will rebound as the low departs between Saturday
night and Sunday along with an increase in west-southwest flow
aloft. A decent push of up inlet flow beginning Saturday evening
and lasting into Sunday may help pull low level marine stratus up
into the Mat-Su Valleys, but this should burn off as the day
progresses. Most of the region will remain dry, except over the
far northern Susitna Valley near a trough moving into the
Interior. Forecast uncertainty increases by Monday, with models
struggling with the handling of another weak North Pacific low
attempting to lift northeast towards Kodiak, with uncertainty also
increasing for the progression of a trough shifting from the Y-K
Delta region into the Alaska Range. For now, it looks like the
ridge axis will try to hang on despite these two features
attempting to erode it, extending the dry spell at least one more
day.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA/BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days
1 through 3: Today through Monday)...

As of Friday afternoon, the low that has been tracking south of the
eastern Aleutians has lifted slightly north over the Alaska Peninsula
becoming nearly stacked. This low will shift eastward into the
central Gulf tonight with decreasing rain shower activity across the
eastern Aleutians and Alaska Peninsula. Back to the west, an upper
trough will slowly progress eastwards with a few scattered rain
showers moving through the western and central Aleutians before the
the trough deepens over the northern Pacific and gets pinched off
from the main westerly flow before gradually weakening. A surface
ridge will reside over eastern half of the Bering this weekend with
the upper ridge starting to build over the eastern Bering
tonight...eventually extending northward into Southwest Alaska and
Bristol Bay area through tomorrow. Generally dry conditions will
accompany the ridge, but could see some upslope showers develop
along the western slopes of the Kuskokwim and Alaska Range Saturday
afternoon as southwesterly boundary layer flow sets up. The latter
half of the weekend and into early next week will be tied to a
Kamchatka low that will deepen as it moves towards the far western
Aleutian Islands. Gale force winds will accompany the front as it
moves into the furthest west islands and then weakens as in moves
into the Northern Pacific. The upper low and longwave trough will
continue to translate east bringing increasing chances for light
rain to Kuskokwim Delta and Lower Kuskokwim Valley by Sunday and
Monday.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Tuesday through Friday)...

The upper level Arctic low is slowly weakening and moving to the
Northeast through the Beaufort Sea. Its trough extending through
the Bering also weakens, but to a lesser degree, and holds its
position from the Chukchi across the Aleutians. Lows approaching
from the west get caught in the flow and turned into the Bering,
bringing locally heavy rains and gusty winds to most of the
Eastern two-thirds of the Bering and Western Alaska. Lows moving
up from the North Pacific are deflected towards the East, sending
their rain and winds over the Alaska Peninsula, the Gulf of
Alaska, Kodiak Island and the Southcentral as the lows exit around
Southeast Alaska through Friday. Model uncertainty continues, but
is lessening through the end of the week.
