...HIGH WIND WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM THIS EVENING THROUGH
WEDNESDAY MORNING...

* WHAT...Southwest winds 45 to 60 mph with gusts up to 80 mph 
  possible.

* WHERE...Central Aleutians.

* WHEN...From this evening through Wednesday morning.

* IMPACTS...High winds could move loose debris, damage property, 
  and cause power outages. Travel could be difficult.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Confidence is increasing surrounding a 
  strong low that will continue to move into the Bering into 
  Tuesday. Storm force winds are expected to move into the 
  Central Aleutians late tomorrow evening as the core of strong 
  winds moves east, toward Adak. Hurricane force gusts are a 
  possibility. Winds should begin to slowly diminish Wednesday 
  morning as the storm weakens and moves east.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A high wind watch means there is potential for a hazardous high
wind event. Monitor the latest forecasts and warnings for updates
on this situation. Fasten loose objects or shelter objects in a
safe location prior to the onset of winds.

Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Today
through Wednesday)...

A front moving across Southcentral is bringing snowfall to the
Cook Inlet and Susitna Valley regions early this morning. This
front is moving eastward fairly quickly so there should be a
tapering off of snowfall later this morning and, for the Cook
Inlet/Susitna Valley area the snow should be done by noon as it
increases in the Copper River Basin.

Winds through Turnagain Arm never did much overnight as the triple
point along the front was strong enough and far enough to the
south as it crossed the Kenai Peninsula to keep a strong pressure
gradient from developing. This feature could be seen well on radar
crossing a little south of Soldotna and Sterling heading just
about due east. What that also indicates is that there will be a
stronger pressure gradient that develops behind this front which
will bring in some strong north to west winds, especially along
the coast later this morning into the afternoon and evening
depending on location. Expect some blowing snow especially in
Whittier and Thompson Pass later today where Blizzard Warnings
remain in effect.

Conditions are mostly calm early on Tuesday throughout the domain
under near zonal flow. A few shortwaves riding in from the west
may generate some light snow on the western faces of the Chugach,
Kenai, and Talkeetna Mountains, but accumulations will be minimal.
By afternoon, a front extending east off of a complex low in the
Bering will bring widespread precipitation underneath
southeasterly winds. Heavier precipitation is expected along the
coast and through the coastal ranges, but after a brief period of
precipitation, most of the population corridors will downslope out
until things shift to the southwest later Wednesday. The
thermodynamic profile of this system remains uncertain, but areas
of mixed precip and rain are probable during this event.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA/BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days
1 through 3: Today through Thursday)...

A front is exiting Southwest to the east this morning and
precipitation continues to taper off. The combination of cold air
advection and upper short-waves rapidly tracking eastward across
the Bering Sea will bring a showery regime to the Bering, Pribilof
Islands, and into Southwest Alaska for today. A transient upper
ridge will build across Southwest on Tuesday and briefly taper off
showers before the next system arrives Tuesday afternoon.

The next system will be a low that tracks from the Pacific to the
Aleutian chain this afternoon before it elongates and moves into
the Bering through Wednesday. The system's front will lift along
the Aleutians today and Tuesday, reaching the Southwest Alaska
coast by Tuesday afternoon, and then the low itself will follow
and track across Southwest on Wednesday and Thursday. The front
will bring widespread rain across the Bering and Aleutians and
then a quick round of widespread snow to Southwest Tuesday evening
into Wednesday morning as it lifts to the east.

In general, gales will become widespread across the Bering and
Aleutians Tuesday into Thursday. The core of strongest winds
(sustained storm force with gusts to hurricane force) around the
southern periphery of the low is currently advertised to track
along the coastal waters just south of the Central Aleutians
Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning. Winds will largely
diminish across the Bering and Aleutians later on Thursday as the
expansive system gradually weakens and tracks eastward across
Southwest, as mentioned above.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Thursday through Sunday)...

A more amplified pattern will take hold of the region as we head
into the long term with a trough digging across the Mainland and a
ridge building in behind it. Widespread precipitation is expected
from the Eastern Kenai Peninsula across the Southcentral Coast to
the Canadian border through Friday evening. Expect colder
temperatures to make a return to mainland Alaska, including
Southcentral, beginning Friday night through at least Sunday as
the ridge dominates the sensible weather. Gustier winds are
expected through Kamishak Gap and area waters around Kodiak Island
Thursday evening through Sunday as pressure gradients increase
between the two features. By Saturday, winds will shift southerly
across the Bering as the ridge of high pressure builds across the
domain. Overall, as the trough slowly shifts eastward, expect
areas of scattered precipitation to follow and areas of clearing
skies behind it as the ridge builds overhead. With high pressure
overhead, this could have the possibility of producing fog in
areas.

.AVIATION...

PANC...MVFR likely with the majority of snowfall expected. Gusty
southeast winds are observed near the terminal this morning and
will likely be shut off once winds become northerly later this
morning. Winds will become light and shift southerly flow tonight
into Tuesday. Expect brief periods of moderate to heavy snow with
rates of 1 inch per hour and conditions degrading to LIFR as
winds transition to northerly. Conditions should rapidly improve
to VFR and light winds on the back edge of the snow later this
morning by around 20Z.
