.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

No major changes to the short term forecast at this time. Patchy
dense fog has lingered through much of the afternoon from the
Seward Hwy north through the Anchorage area and into southern
portions of the Matanuska Valley, with visibilities reduced to
around less than one mile at times. Not expecting much
improvement through tonight into Saturday morning as this closed-
upper low continues to meander northward, with visibilities
expected to drop back down to less than one mile. Anticipating
these fog potential to continue through Saturday morning before
synoptic flow shifts from northerly to southerly.

Looking towards the weekend, an active pattern is once again
taking shape for Southcentral Alaska as an developing low pressure
pushes up the SE Panhandle. Higher confidence of snowfall for
after midnight Saturday for McCarthy and the Wrangell Mountains,
stretching northwestward Saturday morning. Models have nudged this
system more east and the most westward extent for potential seems
to be the northern Talkeetna Mountains and the Alaska Range.
Glennallen and north along the Richardson and Tok Cutoff have the
potential for brief, light, snow showers Saturday too with very
little accumulation expected.

By Saturday night, flow will have switched southerly as a trough
will lift northeastward, pushing up moist southerly flow and
bringing increased precipitation chances to Kodiak Island
Saturday afternoon, spreading to the Kenai Peninsula Gulf Coast
Saturday night and along the rest of the Gulf Coast by Sunday.
Precipitation is expected to begin as snow and gradually
transition to rain for Saturday night in Kodiak. With
southwesterly flow up Cook Inlet ahead of the trough, there is a
chance for a brief snow band to set up Sunday morning somewhere in
Cook Inlet up into the Susitna Valley. Some snowfall cannot be
ruled out for Anchorage either. For now though, not anticipating
widespread snowfall for Anchorage moving into the latter half of
the weekend, with the best chances expected along the Alaska Gulf
coast as easterly downsloping winds should keep areas further
inland dry. While snow will linger for the northwestern Gulf
coast, most areas across Southcentral will have snow potential
ease a bit with a passing ridge Sunday night. Then for Monday
morning, a repeat returns with yet another trough moving along the
same path as the previous, reaching Kodiak early and spreading
north in the afternoon.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3:
Today through Sunday night)...

Today in Bristol Bay winds have shifted increasingly offshore,
picking up slightly in relation to the calm conditions previously.
Due to mostly clear skies across Southwest, overnight
temperatures will go from cold to colder going into the weekend.
Temperatures as low as -30 are expected in the Lower Kuskokwim
Valley near Sleetmute and Crooked Creek tonight. Winds are
expected to remain calm in the area overnight so very cold wind
chills are not expected to be an issue. As the remnants of the
approaching front reach Southwest by Saturday morning, relatively
warmer temperatures will set in overnight into Sunday. With the
arrival of the front Saturday morning, there is a chance for snow
showers to move in. The likelihood for snow showers will extend to
the Bristol Bay area by Saturday afternoon, and is expected to
remain through the end of the weekend.

By Sunday, a strong low will lift into the Alaska Peninsula from
the northern Pacific. Through Sunday, offshore flow will
strengthen and as the low enters the Alaska Peninsula, falling
snow in Bristol Bay is expected, and blowing snow is possible.
Given that the Sunday system will likely be bringing in slightly
warmer air to the area, the intensity scale of blowing snow will
likely be muted. By late Sunday into Monday morning a follow-up
strong low pressure system will move over the Alaska Peninsula
from the northern Pacific. Strong southeast flow will ramp up
further with local enhancement of these strong winds possible
through the Kamishak Gap into Bristol Bay. Very strong gusty winds
are expected along the Alaska Peninsula, with gusts up to 60 mph
near Port Heiden and Pilot Point are possible. This system is not
likely to be particularly wet, owing largely to strong cross-
barrier flow across the Alaska/Aleutian Range, and to some degree,
the cold/dry preceding air mass currently in place. While changes
to the forecast for this system are still likely, the potential
for strong winds appears to be the most notable possible hazard at
this time.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3:
Today through Sunday night)...

A large, complex low pressure continues to remain nearly
stationary over the central and western Bering Sea this morning.
Numerous embedded smaller lows and vorticity maxima will continue
to wobble around this broader circulation over the next day or so
and the main center very slowly fills in and weakens while
continuing not to budge much from its current location. A frontal
boundary along the eastern Aleutians and Alaska Peninsula will
breakdown tonight and move inland towards Southwest Alaska. Winds
up to gale force remain expected near portions of the complex
low, especially where smaller lows/waves rotating around one
another locally enhance the pressure gradient and drive winds up
as high as 35 to 45 kts at times, particularly along the western
half of the Chain. Periods of snow and rain showers will drift
across the Aleutian Chain and into the Pribilofs at times through
the rest of the weekend as well.

By late Sunday, a new North Pacific low will drive north into the
southern Alaska Peninsula, effectively taking over as the
dominant player in the Bering Sea while the original center out in
the western Bering continues to weaken. Gale force winds will
quickly increase around this next low out across the eastern half
of the Bering Sea and out towards the eastern Aleutians, with
potential for sustained winds as high as storm force developing on
either side of the Alaska Peninsula by late Sunday night. By late
Sunday into Monday morning a follow-up strong low pressure system
will move over the Alaska Peninsula from the northern
Pacific. Winds coming across the Alaska Peninsula are expected to
be very gusty early Monday morning however the moisture signature
with this system is not apparently substantial.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Tuesday through Friday)...

Continued unsettled weather into the New Year for most of
Southern Alaska. Forecast models begin well, but diverge in
strengths and tracks of individual systems through the end of the
week. The longwave trough that extends from the Russian Far East
through Bristol Bay into the Gulf of Alaska will move to the North
and undergo some reorientation as several significant shortwaves
work around the center through the forecast period. With well
developed surface lows and frontal systems moving across the
region, widespread precipitation and gusty winds will affect the
Aleutians and Alaska Peninsula into Southwest Alaska through
Friday. Snow prevails across the Northern portions, while mixed
rain and snow or rain push over the Aleutians and AKPEN into
Southwest Alaska through the period. High end gale force winds
with local areas of storm force gusts spreads across the Aleutians
and Bering into the AKPEN and Southwest Alaska up to Nunivak
Island. A significant shortwave repeats the process over the
Central Aleutians for Wednesday and Thursday.

The active weather continues its Eastward track, as strong
surface lows bring heavy rains to parts of Alaska Peninsula and
Kodiak Island starting New Year's Day, and spreading to the
Eastern Kenai Peninsula and Southcentral coasts through midweek.
Gale force gap winds spread along the AKPEN, across Kodiak Island
and through the Barren Islands and Kamishak Bay, diminishing late
Wednesday.
