Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

The pattern remains amplified as upper level ridging currently
extends across the western lower-48 and Canada. Deep negatively
tilted upper troughing currently extends from Siberia to the
central North Pacific. A deep low pressure system is currently
developing along the aforementioned upper trough and is currently
moving northward in the North Pacific. Weak low pressure in the
northern Gulf continues to move northeastward.

Closer to the surface, radar imagery shows precipitation tapering
off from north to south across Southcentral as the aforementioned
weak low exits the area.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Guidance is generally in good agreement with the placement and
intensity of synoptic scale features. The biggest forecast
challenge continues to be refining mesoscale details and local
effects.

.AVIATION...
PANC...VFR conditions with temporary MVFR conditions in light snow through
16z. Then MVFR conditions with light snow between 16 and 19z
before becoming VFR again. Winds will remain light.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

The low near Cape Suckling and Yakutat is over the Gulf coast
this morning. A band of snow has set up overnight for the
Matanuska Valley, Anchorage, and the northern Kenai Peninsula.
This could linger through the rest of this morning as a trough
just to west presses eastward. Pressure gradient gap winds will
weaken, but should continue for a while after precipitation ends.
All precipitation for this afternoon should shift to the Copper
River Basin late this afternoon and evening. A brief ridge will
build across Southcentral Saturday. Most clear skies will be
possible Saturday night. Winds will briefly decrease late Saturday
as the synoptic flow pattern shifts Sunday.

Approaching from the North Pacific is a front lifts north towards
the Gulf of Alaska Sunday. Winds become easterly ahead of the
front. Precipitation looks to arrive after midnight for Kodiak
Island, reaching the coast later Sunday morning. One of the main
challenges with this forecast is the precipitation type. Model
consensus breaks down enough on Sunday night with the orientation
of the winds along the coast, the strength of the trough, and the
location of the development of a surface low will all add to the
challenge in how quickly warmer air will move onshore. Many areas
that have recently experienced a mixture of rain and snow will
again have a similar experience with this system. It appears that
precipitation transitions could begin as early as Sunday evening,
but will likely have seen some change over by Monday afternoon. A
deeper fetch of southerly flow with each successive system is
expected bring additional moisture and warmer air into
Southcentral, especially going into Tuesday night.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Today
through Monday night)...

A strong upper-level ridge is building in across Southwest Alaska
this morning as the last vestiges of a trough producing light
snowfall along the Western Alaska Range exit east into
Southcentral. Clear skies, afforded by the ridge, have allowed
for temperatures to drop ten to twenty degrees from yesterday's
highs. Northerly winds across the Kuskokwim Delta combined with
these colder temperatures have brought wind chills to near 40
below zero. As a result, a Wind Chill Advisory continues to be in
effect for the Delta through noon today. Though temperatures will
recover somewhat this afternoon, winds also increase out of the
northeast in response to a deep low in the North Pacific, which
will keep wind chills hovering between 30 to 40 below zero through
at least Sunday.

The deep low will then push its front across the Alaska Peninsula
tonight, reaching Bristol Bay by Sunday. Strong northerly flow at
the surface is likely to keep any precipitation that falls as
snow for Bristol Bay, while strong easterly (cross-barrier) flow
aloft should keep the precipitation light and scattered. The
strong offshore flow, reaching 35 to 40 mph for parts of the
Kuskokwim Delta and Bristol Bay, will also have the potential to
loft pre-existing snow from the ground and reduce visibility
through Sunday night. Then, a large digging trough over interior
Alaska will draw up the decaying low center from along the
Aleutian Chain toward Bristol Bay for Monday. Low-level flow may
shift out of the southeast in response, creating more favorable
conditions for steadier precipitation going into Monday night.
While there is some potential for freezing rain as this draws a
warmer air mass over top of cold northerly surface flow, the
air mass associated with the decaying low appears to cool
sufficiently by the time it reaches Southwest Alaska for snow to
be the most likely resulting precipitation type.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 3: Today
through Monday night)...

Active weather is set to continue across the Bering Sea through
the beginning of next week. A compact, storm-force low in the
western Bering will quickly exit the region today, though a broad
swath of gales will linger along its front, extending
southeastward to a more powerful low pressure system approaching
from the North Pacific. This second low will slowly push
northward, pressing against a strong surface high pressure in the
Bering Strait, which will induce storm force winds across the
Aleutian Islands this morning. Easterly winds will gradually
increase through the day, peaking mid-afternoon through early
evening for the Eastern Aleutians as the front tracks northward. A
High Wind Warning is in effect for the Eastern Aleutians with
hurricane force gusts anticipated to materialize. Precipitation will
likely begin as snow, with strong winds compounding with the snow for
a period of reduced visibility, before precipitation switches over
to rain Saturday evening. Winds then diminish late Saturday night
along the Aleutian Chain as the front pushes into the Bering Sea.
Strong, gusty winds persist in the vicinity of this front across
much of the Bering Sea as the North Pacific low slowly weakens
while high pressure to the north continues to intensify,
maintaining a strong pressure gradient. Widespread gales will
continue to promote heavy to extreme freezing spray along the sea
ice edge through the short term, though, the worst conditions
retreat to the northern Bering by Monday as the calmer low center
tracks north and elongates along the Aleutians. Light snow and
rain also accompany the front across the southern Bering Sea into
the beginning of the new week.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Tuesday through Friday)...

Overall the struggle with a complex pattern evolution, even prior
to the extended timeframe, continues to throw a large wrench into
the gears from a predictability standpoint. The model consensus
for the behavior of an Arctic low situated over far northeastern
Russia and out towards the Bering Strait continues to shift, again
with big changes appearing even in the shorter term on Sunday and
Monday. By the start of the period on Tuesday, models have
partially shifted back to the scenario where the low becomes a
stretched out trough between the North Slope and Norton Sound as
it becomes sandwiched between a blocking high drifting into the
East Siberian Sea and a much stronger ridge extending into
northwest Canada and Southeast Alaska. With the exception of the
ECMWF, most solutions still keep the Arctic air mass to the north
of the Alaska Range, with much more mild conditions still likely
across most of Southwest and Southcentral between Tuesday and at
least Thursday as strong south to southwest flow persists around
the ridge extending over Canada and across much of the Gulf.

Most of the southern Mainland will remain in an active pattern
and right under fire from the prevailing storm track. Several
lows will likely to track into Southcentral through Thursday,
bringing multiple rounds of snow and rain into the region.
Meanwhile, a deep low stalling out near Kamchatka will push a
strong front northeast across the Bering and Aleutians, likely
remaining gale force or stronger until it approaches the Southwest
coast by Thursday night. There are early indications for the
ridge to amplify and shift west by Friday, perhaps allowing for in
a break in the active pattern towards the end of the week.
