Tonight and Monday remain the calm before the storm for most of the
area. Areas south of Pierre, especially south of the I-90 corridor
may see some light precip move in during the afternoon. With
temperatures approaching 40 degrees for highs, though, any initial
precip will be rain or rain/snow. As temperatures cool during the
evening, precipitation will quickly change to all snow and spread
north and east. Significant accumulations will begin late Monday
night into early Tuesday morning. This event will be long-lived and
potentially historic in its impacts.
Uncertainty: The heaviest band of snow continues to trend slightly
northwest with a small shift west in the consensus low track.
Watertown and areas south and east could see less snow and more
freezing drizzle/freezing rain with this event. For now, everywhere
along and northwest of a Pierre to Wheaton, MN line could get 1 to 2
feet of heavy, wet snow. Aberdeen has less than a 1 in 10 chance of
seeing LESS than a foot.
Blizzard conditions will likely be a primary concern as early as 12z
Tuesday with winds already gusting to 40 to 50 mph from the Missouri
River to the Coteau. Strong winds will spread over the region and
increase behind the low on Tuesday night and Wednesday. Shift of
tails was showing an average of 55 mph winds. With the lack of cold
air advection or pressure rises, it's hard to say whether we'll
realize the strongest NBM winds of over 70 mph. However, given the
intensity of the low itself, winds over 60 mph may not be out of the
question.
Snow will end from southwest to northeast through daytime Wednesday.
Winds, on the other hand will remain gusty all day, so blizzard
conditions will persist.

Things appear to quiet down after the mid week storm system exits.
The upper level flow will remain fairly zonal/progressive through
the weekend. There are a couple of shortwaves that will be tracking
across the region, however limited moisture should allow dry
conditions regardless of their presence. Of the aforementioned
shortwaves, the more defined trough will likely bring a wind shift
Saturday afternoon. Temperature-wise we will see a general warming
trend though the weekend. NBM ensemble spread suggests a fair amount
of confidence in the temp forecast with generally only a 5 to 10
degree spread between ensemble members. While relatively warmer, we
will still be well below normal for this time of the year. The fresh
snowpack will not help that situation. Temperatures range from 20 to
30 degrees below normal Thursday to about 5 to 15 degrees below
normal by the end of the weekend. Signs are quite promising that
large scale western CONUS ridge will be in place by early next week.
