The forecast remains on track this morning. No major changes at
this time. Continuing to tweak the details for this upcoming
storm.

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Friday Afternoon)
Issued at 430 AM CDT Thu Mar 30 2023

Initial mid level warm advection band has moved across the CWA from
southwest to northeast this morning, but dry low levels have
precluded precipitation. Winds will be on the increase as low
pressure deepens in northeast Colorado. Low level flow is out of the
gulf, and we can already see stratus developed across the
central/southern plains. NAM/GFS BUFKIT profiles begin to saturate
in the low levels later this afternoon...a process that continues
through the evening/overnight. QPF will be light but with
temperatures close to freezing overnight, potential is there for ice
accumulations. Additionally, profiles and HRRR MUCAPE support some
elevated instability in the southeast corner of the CWA. As the
western CWA sees a changeover to snowfall, isolated thunderstorms
could be moving across far southeast counties. Depending on
temperatures early Friday, elevated storms could move over areas
that are still snow covered and have yet to see a ground thaw, which
could result in additional, and potentially more serious, icing. As
we move through Friday, profiles convert to all snow from northwest
to southeast. Mixed winds in BUFKIT are a little lower compared to
24 hours ago, but using a mix of CAMS for winds/gusts we still have
good continuity with the previous forecast of peak winds of 45 to
55mph thanks to those 6 hours pressure rises of 12-15mb, strong
gradient, and cold advection kicking in.

As for snowfall accumulations, HREF indicates a high potential for
inch per hour snowfall rates in Corson/Dewey Friday morning. That
area of heaviest snow translating east across the CWA although it
does weaken briefly during the pivot to eastern CWA where there is a
noted re-intensification, along with a slight stall. In this area,
there is even the potential for 2 inch per hour snowfall rates. GEFS
plums continue to show a broad outcome in QPF but overall better
alignment, with QPF of 0.5 to 1.5 inches. With 10:1 ratios,
potential to exceed a foot of snow will probably be realized
somewhere in the central and eastern CWA.  Overall there has been a
slight shift northward compared to yesterdays snow accumulations and
probabilities. As such have shifted the watch north. Only other
thing of note that we may want to consider is that offices to the
east of us have issued winter weather advisories to cover the
freezing drizzle aspect of this system before blizzard conditons
develop and that is something we may want to consider when upgrading
the current headlines.

.LONG TERM...(Friday Evening through Wednesday)

The main forecast challenge revolves around a potentially major
storm system affecting the region during the early to middle part of
next week. Upper ridging will be over the area on Saturday, then a
more zonal flow pattern develops Saturday night through Sunday
night. Will then see southwest flow develop as a trough digs down
the west coast. The southwest flow will remain as the trough tracks
across the western part of the country, and by the Tuesday/Wednesday
time frame, will see a pretty strong shortwave track across the
Northern Plains.

At the surface, high pressure will be over the region Saturday
morning, then gets pushed east Saturday afternoon as a low pressure
trough slides across the Rockies. Will see southerly flow usher in
some warmer air over the weekend and into the day Monday. Attention
then turns to what looks to be a potentially significant storm
system Monday night through Wednesday. Low pressure will intensify
over Colorado Monday, then will track northeastward to likely
somewhere north of the Great Lakes by early Thursday morning. The
deterministic models are not in great agreement with the track of the
low, which will make a huge difference to where and when the most
significant weather will occur. Right now, the ECMWF is is the
fastest and the furthest east, while while the GFS and the Canadian
are slower, but the GFS is much further north with the low track.
All in all, there is a decent chance for the CWA to receive several
inches of snow, along with the potential for wind gusts in excess of
40 knots, sometime during the Tuesday and Wednesday time frame. Will
fine tune the details as the time period gets closer.

High temperatures will generally be in the 30s north and east, to
the 40s southwest Saturday through Monday, then in the 20s to lower
30s Tuesday and Wednesday. Overnight lows will be mainly in the 20s
Saturday night and Sunday night, then in the teens and 20s Monday
night and Tuesday night.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for west central Minnesota,
central South Dakota, north central South Dakota and northeast
South Dakota.

.DAY ONE...Today and tonight.

Winds will pick up through the day as a low pressure system moves
towards the region. Patchy blowing and drifting snow is possible in
areas where the snow has not crusted over.

Late this afternoon into the evening we will see increased low level
moisture, while temperatures remain close to the freezing mark. Light
ice accumulations in freezing drizzle are possible through early
Friday.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday.

Freezing drizzle and potential light ice accumulations will continue
into mid-day Friday before we see a change over to heavy snow. Winds
will also be on the increase. The combination of heavy snow and winds
has the potential to result in blizzard conditions. Conditions will
not improve until the evening or Saturday morning.

Another potent winter storm is possible during the middle of next
week.
