Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED National Weather Service Albuquerque NM 524 PM MST Wed Nov 29 2023 ...New AVIATION... .SYNOPSIS... Issued at 1252 PM MST Wed Nov 29 2023 Warmer conditions prevail today ahead of a storm system, currently moving rapidly eastward from southern California into Arizona. This system will move east across NM late tonight through Thursday, bringing good chances for precipitation and colder temperatures. Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for the central and western mountains, as well as the highlands along the Continental Divide for accumulating snow. Expect impacts to roadways across western NM. This system will also bring windy conditions, especially to southern areas. A separate disturbance will move across Thursday night through Friday, bringing another round of precipitation with lowering snow levels and blustery conditions. Snow will come to an end late Friday night into Saturday, but blustery conditions will persist. && .SHORT TERM... (This evening through Thursday night) Issued at 1252 PM MST Wed Nov 29 2023 A couple of storm systems will cross northern and central NM tonight through Thursday night. It's still difficult to discern a break in precipitation between the exit of the first system and the entrance of the second system. Precipitation does appear to begin around midnight near the AZ/NM state line then progresses eastward overnight, reaching the Albuquerque Metro area potentially in time for the Thursday morning commute. In addition, there may be isolated thunder overnight and patchy freezing fog over the western mountains, as well as patchy fog and low clouds east of the Pecos Valley late tonight and Thursday morning possibly impacting the Clovis area, where return flow transports higher dewpoints. The northeast corner of the state will remain pretty dry with dewpoints in the single digits this afternoon and into Thursday. Forecast models bring a northerly wind shift and even drier low level air into the east Thursday behind the wind shift, allowing a decent low level moisture gradient to develop from west to east south of I-40 Thursday afternoon, more or less in line where the SPC Day 2 Outlook paints the general area of thunderstorms. Also, strong west winds remain mostly south of the CWA, but do tend to clip the higher terrain of southern Lincoln County as well as the Chaves County Bootheel. All in all, changes to existing highlights include converting the Winter Storm Watch to a Winter Weather Advisory, extending the existing Winter Weather Advisory through Friday night, as well as hoisting a Wind Advisory for the Chaves County Bootheel for Thursday. High temperatures cool Thursday to about 5-15 degrees below normal but overnight lows stay generally above average. && .LONG TERM... (Friday through Tuesday) Issued at 1252 PM MST Wed Nov 29 2023 Phasing of two shortwave troughs will happen over the region Friday into Friday night, the first from over AZ and colder one from over the Great Basin. These features will keep forcing going and bring snow levels down more to most valley floors. Additional snow accumulation Friday into early Saturday will favor the west central and northwest mountains, especially the peaks and higher west-facing slopes. Winter Weather Advisories will continue through Friday night, but a few lower elevation zones may get dropped earlier as impacts wane and become more relegated to the mountains. Winds will crank-up Friday through Friday night with the trough passage, especially along/east of the central mountain chain where blustery conditions are forecast. Otherwise, Friday will be cold, with high temperatures 5-15 degrees below normal. A trailing trough will move over early Saturday and moderate northwest flow aloft will prevail in it's wake, bringing windy conditions along/east of the central mountain chain. A Wind Advisory may be required for Saturday for a few of our northwest flow-favored forecast zones. Stronger northwest flow aloft will persist Sunday, which will be a similar day to Saturday although a few degrees warmer. An upper level ridge is forecast to swell over the Desert Southwest early next week and then transition east over NM by mid week, bringing 500mb heights up to around 584dam and accelerating a warming trend that will take temperatures above normal areawide by Wednesday. && .AVIATION... (00Z TAFS) Issued at 503 PM MST Wed Nov 29 2023 Snow showers with MVFR and IFR conditions are forecast to break out over west central and southwest areas this evening, then spread to northwest areas and other locations as far east as the central mountain chain late tonight, and onto portions of the eastern plains Thursday. The snow level looks to drop near 5,000 feet in elevation by sunrise, then it will probably lift near 7500 feet Thursday afternoon. Light snow accumulation is expected at KGUP late tonight, then at KSAF and potentially KFMN and KLVS on Thursday. The atmosphere looks like it will be unstable enough for isolated thunderstorms in the mix around Gallup, Grants, and Glenwood late tonight. Precipitation is forecast to decrease in coverage and intensity late Thursday afternoon, but it will probably increase in coverage and intensity over north central and western areas Thursday night as another disturbance arrives. && .FIRE WEATHER... Issued at 1252 PM MST Wed Nov 29 2023 A series of storm systems will bring lowland rain and snow and accumulating mountain snow to mainly areas along and west of the central mountain chain later tonight through Friday night. A few thunderstorms are possible later tonight over west central NM and a few showers and storms may wander into the eastern plains Thursday. Progressively colder temperatures with lowering snow levels are expected as each system passes. Daytime temperatures will cool to 5 to 15 degrees below normal Thursday and remain below normal through Sunday. Drier and potentially strong northwest winds Saturday may create an area of near critical conditions across east central NM. Brisk northwest flow persists Sunday into Monday especially along the east slopes of the central mountain chain.
